The Finals: Marcus Carisse Versus Gabriel Orosan-Weine

August 31st, 2015

It all comes down to this! Burning Abyss versus Nekroz in the Finals of the format’s first Championship! Marcus Carisse is piloting Nekroz. Gabriel Orosan-Weine is playing Burning Abyss. Which theme would reign supreme? We were about to find out!

Carisse started things off with Senju of the Thousand Hands, searching Nekroz of Clausolas to search Nekroz Kaleidoscope. He activated it to Summon Nekroz of Unicore with Herald of the Arc Light, then used the Herald’s effect to get Nekroz of Brionac from his Deck. He Set one card to his back row.

Weine had Karma Cut; Mathematician; Draghig, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; The Traveler and the Burning Abyss; and two copies of Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He revealed Draghig to Special Summon it, then Special Summoned a Graff to overlay for Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. He detached Draghig to yard Soul Charge, Raigeki Break, and Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck. He Normal Summoned Mathematician to send Absolute King Back Jack from his Deck to his Graveyard, then used Back Jack’s effect to stack the top three cards of his Deck: Solemn Warning, Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, and Vanity’s Emptiness. He put them in the order of Scarm, Warning, and Emptiness on top of his Deck. He attacked over Senju with Dante and Set Karma Cut and The Traveler to finish out, holding that last Graff in hand.

Carisse pitched Nekroz of Clausolas and Brionac to search Nekroz Kaleidoscope and Nekroz of Unicore respectively, then activated Kaleidoscope to Summon the Unicore with another Herald of the Arc Light. That got him his third Unicore, and he attacked with one of his on-field Unicores, drawing out the effect of Back Jack (Weine sent Scarm to the Graveyard). Unicore destroyed Mathematician and Weine drew with its effect, getting Vanity’s Emptiness. Carisse overlaid for Abyss Dweller in Main Phase 2, detached for its effect to shut down the Scarm, and activated Nekroz Mirror. He banished Brionac and Clausolas from his Graveyard as Tribute for Nekroz of Trishula, banishing Dante from the field, Scarm from the Graveyard, and Graff from Weine’s hand. Weine flipped The Traveler and the Burning Abyss to bring back his Graff.

Weine drew Solemn Warning for his turn, holding Vanity’s Emptiness with Karma Cut Set. He Set Warning, then flipped Karma Cut in his End Phase to pitch Emptiness and banish Abyss Dweller, trying to keep that Graff relevant.

Carisse attacked Graff with Trishula, destroying it, and Weine used its effect to Special Summon Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck.

Weine drew Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Normal Summoned it, overlaying it with Graff for Dante in defense mode. He detached Rubic to send Mistaken Arrest, Graff, and Fiend Griefing to his Graveyard to buff up Dante, then Special Summoned Scarm from his Deck with Graff’s ability.

Carisse pitched Unicore to get back Nekroz of Clausolas , then ditched that to get Nekroz Mirror. Brionac got him Nekroz of Valkyrus , but when he activated Nekroz Mirror Weine negated it with Solemn Warning.

Weine drew another Absolute King Back Jack. He detached Cir from Dante to yard another Cir, Foolish Burial, and Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. Cir brought back his Graff, Farfa briefly banished Carisse’s Trishula, and Weine overlaid Graff and Scarm for another Dante. He detached Scarm to boost that Dante up, and sent Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, another Cir, and Back Jack to the Graveyard. Weine banished a Cir, a Scarm, and a copy of The Traveler to burn Carisse with Barbar, then stacked Karma Cut, Tour Guide, and another Traveler with Back Jack. He attacked with his 1000 ATK Dante and Carisse dropped Nekroz of Valkyrus to halt Weine’s aggression. Weine overlaid his boosted Dante with Downerd Magician to finish out the turn. Trishula returned to the field.

Carisse Summoned Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands, searching his Deck for Nekroz Cycle. Carisse ended his turn and Weine discarded Back Jack for Karma Cut, banishing the Trishula – this time permanently. His Back Jack revealed Skill Drain, The Traveler, and Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss. He placed them back on top of his deck, Lake on top, then Skill Drain, then the Traveler. He banished Back Jack to Set the Lake.

Weine Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld, Special Summoning Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He attacked Manju with Downerd Magician and Carisse dropped another Nekroz of Valkyrus. In Main Phase 2, Weine Set a card to his backrow and overlaid Tour guide and Libic for Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction.

Carisse searched his Deck for Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz with Reinforcement of the Army, then activated Nekroz Cycle to pitch Shurit and revive Nekroz of Brionac. Shurit got him… nothing, as he was apparently out of cards to search with it. Weine flipped Skill Drain to stop Brionac’s effect and keep his Xyz safe, and Carisse could only attack Downerd Magician with Brionac. He did activate Shared Ride, drawing a card when Weine got Cir back with Dante’s effect. Manju then attacked the on-field Dante and Weine got back another Cir. Carisse drew again and Set a card to his backrow. Carisse summoned another Manju and overlaid them both for Number 52: Diamond Crab King.

Weine drew Fiend Griefing. He attacked Brionac with Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction, destroying it, and Set one of the Cirs.

Carisse Set another backrow.

Weine drew Torrential Tribute and Flip Summoned Cir, then Normal Summoned his second Cir. He overlaid them for Number 20: Giga-Brilliant in defense mode and detached for its effect under Skill Drain, solely to Special Summon a Dante with Cir.

Carisse Set a monster.

Weine drew Raigeki Break and detached his next Cir from Giga-Brilliant, reviving another Dante. He turned Giga-Brilliant to attack mode, then flipped Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss to destroy Number 52: Diamond Crab King, Carisse’s Set Manju, and his Set Reinforcement of the Army. When Weine activated the effects of his Dantes in the Graveyard Carisse flipped Shared Ride, but it wasn’t enough to fend off the ensuing onslaught! Carisse condeded the moment he realize he was beaten.

The first Duel is a massive grind, with Marcus Carisse pressing early but Gabriel Oroson-Weine persevering, and ever so slowly working toward a spectacular crescendo! Weine was now just one win removed from the Championship. Twenty-two minutes remained in the 60 minute round.

Weine opened with Torrential Tribute; Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; and Majesty’s Fiend! He Special Summoned Libic and Tribute Summoned Majesty’s Fiend, then Set the Torrential. This could be over really fast.

Carisse searched out Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz with Reinforcement of the Army, then Set three cards to his backrow!

Weine drew Vanity’s Emptiness and made a direct attack! He Set the Emptiness.

Carisse flipped Royal Decree! He activated his Set Nekroz Mirror, pitching Exa, Enforcer of the Nekroz and Nekroz of Clausolas for Nekroz of Valkyrus, and attacked to destroy Majesty’s Fiend! He searched Nekroz of Brionac in Main Phase 2 and Set another Spell or Trap Card.

Weine drew Fiend Griefing and Set Graff, then Set Griefing.

Carisse Tributed his Valkyrus to draw a card. Eighteen minutes remained in the Match. He Summoned Senju of the Thousand Hands to get Nekroz of Unicore, then activated Nekroz Kaleidoscope to get it into play with Herald of the Arc Light. A couple moves later Weine realized it was game and scooped, wanting as much time as possible to grind Carisse out in the third Duel.

Marcus Carisse make short work of Game 2, overpowering Weine’s Majesty’s Fiend and locking him down under Royal Decree for an easy win! One more Duel would decide the entire tournament! Weine opted to play second.

Carisse opened with Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands searching Nekroz of Unicore, then pitched Nekroz of Clausolas to get Nekroz Kaleidoscope. He activated it to Summon the Unicore with Herald of the Arc Light, searched Nekroz of Brionac from his Deck, and dumped that to get Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz.

Weine had Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; Foolish Burial; Karma Cut; Mistaken Arrest; Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; and Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He Summoned Barbar, then activated Foolish Burial to kick Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to his Graveyard. That let him Special Summon Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck, and he Normal Summoned Cir. He Tuned it to Rubic for Virgil, Rock Star of the Burning Abyss, revived Graff with Cir, and attacked over Unicore with Virgil… or so he thought. Carisse dropped Nekroz of Decisive Armor to win the battle! Virgil went down and Weine got Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss with Virgil’s effect.

Weine attacked Manju with Barbar, destroying it, then overlaid in Main Phase 2 for Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. He detached Barbar to yard Majesty’s Fiend, Raigeki, and Scarm from his Deck, beefing up Dante and netting that Scarm effect. He overlaid Dante with Downerd Magician, Set two backrows, and searched his Deck for Cir with Scarm in the End Phase.

Carisse drew to four cards in hand, that still Unicore on his field. He activated Nekroz Cycle Tributing Shurit and revived his Nekroz of Decisive Armor, but when he activated Shurit’s effect Weine Chained Mistaken Arrest! Carisse blasted Weine’s last Set card with Decisive Armor, but Weine Chained it – Karma Cut – to banish the Decisive Armor. He’d discarded Cir, and revived his Virgil, Rock Star of the Burning Abyss.

Carisse had two cards left in hand and couldn’t search more Ritual Spells with the copies in his Graveyard, since he still controlled a monster (Nekroz of Unicore). He activated Nekroz Mirror, Tributing Nekroz of Clausolas from his Graveyard to bring down another form his hand in defense mode! He attacked over Downerd with Unicore, destroying it, and Weine took back his Cir with Dante. He Special Summoned Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss with Graff’s effect.

Weine drew Scarm, now holding to Scarm, Cir, and Graff, with Farfa and Virgil on the field. He was up against Nekroz of Clausolas and Nekroz of Unicore, and Carisse had an empty back row and an empty hand. Weine Special Summoned Scarm, overlaid it with Farfa for Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss, and detached Farfa for Dante’s effect. He sent Mistaken Arrest, Fiend Griefing, and Horn of Heaven – yes, classic Horn of Heaven – to his Graveyard to boost Dante to 2500 ATK. Weine targeted Clausolas with Farfa’s effect, and Carissed Chained its ability before it was banished. Weine Special Summoned Graff, Normal Summoned Cir and overlaid for another Dante. He detached Cir, yarding Skill Drain, Majesty’s Fiend, and The Traveler. His Cir brought back his third Dante.

Virgil attacked Unicore, and Weine attacked with all three Dantes to knock Carisse down to 4500 Life Points. Weine had 4900 LP. Weine overlaid two of his Dantes with Downerd Magicians. Carisse got back his Clausolas.

Carisse drew to one card in hand and searched his Graveyard for a solution as time was called. Three turns would be played after this one. Carisse turned Clausolas to attack and ran over a Downerd Magician, giving Weine back his Cir with Dante.

Turn 1. Weine drew Graff, holding Scarm and Cir. He controlled Dante, Downerd Magician, and Virgil. He pitched Cir for Virgil’s effect, robbing Carisse’s Graveyard of Nekroz Cycle, then detached Farfa from Dante to banish Clausolas again. He turned Dante to attack, and Carisse revealed his last card – Nekroz of Valkyrus! Carisse dropped it to end the Battle Phase. Weine searched his Deck for Tour Guide from the Underworld with Scarm in the End Phase. Clausolas returned to the field.

Turn 2, Carisse’s final turn. He turned Clausolas to defense mode and Set his last card to his backrow. The Duel stood at 3700 LP to 4500.

Turn 3. Weine drew Mistaken Arrest. He pitched Graff for Virgil’s effect, getting rid of Carisse’s backrow card. Graff let Weine Special Summo Cir, which was then destroyed since Weine controlled Downerd Magician.

That let Weine Special Summon Farfa, which was destroyed in turn, and banished Nekroz of Clausolas from the field! A string of attacks ended the Duel, the Match, and the tournament in the final turn of time!

Gabriel Orosan-Weine wins YCS Toronto!
