October 4th, 2015

We featured Austin Jones earlier today with his freshly legal PSY-Frame Deck, and now that he is fighting for this tournament life in the last Round of Day 1, we figured it was worth seeing it again. His opponent is Francisco Javier Saldivar, who has made it to the same 5-1-2 record with his Performage Shaddoll Deck. Both Duelists need a win here to advance to Day 2 in hopes of making the Top 32 Cut, but only one can.

It’s time to Duel!

Saldivar won the roll and chose to go second.

Saldivar Normal Summoned Mathematician and tried to use its effect, but in response to it Jones had PSY-Framegear Alpha. In response to that, Saldivar had El Shaddoll Fusion, and in response to that Jones had Maxx “C”! The El Shaddoll Fusion Special Summoned El Shaddoll Winda, letting him draw PSY-Framegear Beta, and then PSY-Framegear Alpha resolved Special Summoning PSY-Framegear Driver and adding PSY-Framegear Gamma, and then Mathematician sent Performage Damage Juggler to the Graveyard. In a new Chain, Shaddoll Beast triggered and Jones activated PSY-Frame Overload to banish his PSY-Framegear Alpha along with Saldivar’s El Shaddoll Winda. Saldivar got a draw from Shaddoll Beast, and then banished Performage Damage Juggler to add Performage Trick Clown. Saldivar Set two to his back row before ending.

Jones drew another copy of PSY-Framegear Alpha for turn, and then used PSY-Frame Overload to banish his PSY-Frame Driver and Saldivar’s Mathematician. He activated PSY-Frame Circuit, then Normal Summoned Cardcar D. He used its effect to draw Terraforming and PSY-Framegear Gamma during the End Phase.

Saldivar drew for turn and tried to end, but during the End Phase Jones used his PSY-Frame Overload to banish his in hand PSY-Framegear Beta and one of Saldivar’s Set back row.

Jones drew and tried to activate Terraforming, but got stopped by Saldivar’s Mistake!

Saldivar drew and Normal Summoned Performage Damage Juggler, but when he did Jones sprang into action. He activated PSY-Framegear Alpha in response, and then Chained the effect of PSY-Frame Overload to banish his in hand PSY-Framegear Gamma to banish the opposing Mistake. The PSY-Framegear Alpha hit the Field, Special Summoning PSY-Frame Driver, and added PSY-Framegear Delta. He then Synchro Summoned thanks to PSY-Frame Circuit for PSY-Framelord Zeta!

Jones drew Field Barrier for turn and immediately activated it. He declared an attack with PSY-Framelord Zeta over Performage Damage Juggler, and in Main Phase 2 used PSY-Frame Overload to banish his in hand PSY-Framegear Delta and his opponent’s Set back row. He passed once he was done.

Saldivar drew and activated Shaddoll Fusion! He sent Effect Veiler and Shaddoll Squamata to Special Summon El Shaddoll Construct. The Shaddoll Squamata triggered, then the El Shaddoll Construct, and Chain Link 3 Jones used PSY-Framelord Zeta to banish itself along with the El Shaddoll Construct. Both Shaddoll Squamata and El Shaddoll Construct resolved, sending Shaddoll Core and Shaddoll Dragon. Saldivar then ordered his Chain Links so that Shaddoll Dragon was Chain Link 1 and Shaddoll Core was Chain Link 2, which let him add back Shaddoll Fusion and destroy Jones’ PSY-Frame Overload. When Saldivar tried to banish his Performage Damage Juggler, Jones responded with PSY-Framegear Gamma to negate it and Special Summon PSY-Frame Driver. He then Synchro Summoned both for PSY-Framelord Omega, using its effect to randomly banish Shaddoll Fusion from Saldivar’s hand along with itself. Saldivar ended without any other actions.

Jones drew Burial from a Different Dimension for turn, then used the effect of PSY-Framelord Zeta to banish itself and El Shaddoll Construct. He declared a direct attack with PSY-Framelord Omega to put Saldivar down to 4200 Life Points. Jones drew Emergency Teleport for turn, his Monsters Special Summoned themselves back from the Banished and he went straight to Battle Phase. He declared an attack with PSY-Framelord Zeta into a Set Performage Trick Clown, which Saldivar activated to bring itself back, and the Jones attacked with the PSY-Framelord Omega to destroy it. Still during the Battle Phase, Jones activated Emergency Teleport to Special Summon PSY-Framegear Beta from his Deck and Synchro Summon a second copy of PSY-Framelord Omega. He used both, banishing his opponent’s Shaddoll Fusion and El Shaddoll Fusion from his hand, then ended.

Saldivar drew and without any options ended his turn.

Without a thorough understanding of what Jones was trying to do, Saldivar played right into the hands of Jones as the game slipped away from him. Will he gain the experience necessary and get his head together for the second Duel, or will the second go as poorly as the first?

Saldivar chose to go second.

Duel Two:

Jones opened with PSY-Framegear Alpha, PSY-Framegear Gamma, Maxx “C”, Field Barrier, and PSY-Frame Circuit. He activated PSY-Frame Circuit, then followed it up with Field Barrier and ended his turn.

Saldivar started off by activating Foolish Burial to send Shaddoll Hedgehog, but when he tried to activate it Jones used PSY-Framegear Gamma to negate it and Special Summon PSY-Frame Driver from his Deck! He then Synchro Summoned PSY-Frame Overload and used its effect, banishing itself and Saldivar’s in hand Shaddoll Core. Saldivar Set one to his back row and ended.

Saldivar drew and activated Breakthrough Skill during his Standby Phase so that the PSY-Framelord Omega wouldn’t get a chance to work. He then activated Shaddoll Fusion, which prompted Jones to use his Maxx “C”, and when Shaddoll Fusion resolved Saldivar sent Performage Damage Juggler and Shaddoll Squamata to the Graveyard to Special Summon El Shaddoll Construct. Jones drew Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror off of the Maxx “C”, and Saldivar sent Shaddoll Beast and Shaddoll Hedgehog thanks to El Shaddoll Construct and Shaddoll Squamata, letting him add Shaddoll Dragon to his hand and draw to six cards. He banished Performage Damage Juggler next to add Performage Hat Tricker to his hand. He then activated Raigeki to destroy the PSY-Framelord Omega! He Normal Summoned Mathematician and attempted to use its effect, prompting Jones to use PSY-Framegear Alpha and Special Summon PSY-Frame Driver while adding PSY-Framegear Beta to his hand. Then, immediately after the Chain Link resolved, he Synchro Summoned PSY-Framelord Zeta! The Mathematician was finally able to resolve to send Shaddoll Fusion. He triggered its effect to Special Summon itself, letting Jones draw Pot of Duality off of Maxx “C”, and then he used PSY-Framelord Zeta to banish itself along with El Shaddoll Construct. Saldivar swung directly with Mathematician, which Jones responded to with PSY-Framegear Beta, but in response to that Saldivar Chained El Shaddoll Fusion to send Mathematician and Shaddoll Dragon to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon El Shaddoll Shekhinaga! Jones drew PSY-Framegear Gamma off of Maxx “C”. He Special Summoned the PSY-Framegear Beta and the PSY-Frame Driver. He immediately Synchro Summoned using PSY-Frame Circuit into Ancient Sacred Wyvern. Saldivar ended his turn.

He went to Battle Phase and declared an attack over El Shaddoll Shekhinaga, allowing Saldivar to add back Shaddoll Fusion, and then used PSY-Framelord Zeta to banish itself and El Shaddoll Construct. Jones went to Main Phase 2, used Pot of Duality to add Mystical Space Typhoon to his hand, which he then used to blow away Saldivar’s Set Mistake. Jones Set Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror and ended his turn.

Saldivar drew for turn and tried to activate Shaddoll Fusion, but Jones responded with both Retaliating “C” and Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror! Saldivar resolved the Shaddoll Fusion, banishing Shaddoll Beast and Performage Damage Juggler from his Deck to Special Summon El Shaddoll Construct. Saldivar tributed his Set Shaddoll Falco for Majesty’s Fiend, then declared an attack with El Shaddoll Construct to destroy the Ancient Sacred Wyvern and then over the Retaliating “C” with Majesty’s Fiend. He Set a card to his back row before he ended.

Jones drew Emergency Teleport for turn. PSY-Framelord Zeta and El Shaddoll Construct both came back, and then he moved to Battle Phase to declare an attack over Majesty’s Fiend with PSY-Framelord Zeta. He then used the Emergency Teleport during Battle Phase to Special Summon PSY-Framegear Alpha, and Synchro Summoned both for Stardust Dragon. He declared an attack, causing El Shaddoll Construct to trigger, which he then negated with Stardust Dragon. When Saldivar tried to use the effect of El Shaddoll Construct to add back a Shaddoll Spell or Trap, Jones responded to the effect with PSY-Framegear Gamma to Special Summon itself and PSY-Frame Driver.
