Round 3 Feature Match: Jacob Hazel versus Thomas Morran

November 8th, 2015

Jacob Hazel joined the DARK side with Kozmo this weekend. Currently 2-0, he is using sweet tech like Reasoning and Offerings to the Doomed to accelerate a ton of damage and a bunch of easy wins. His opponent has chosen to stick with team blue, using a pretty standard Nekroz Deck that just tries to grind out the opponent with a flurry of Ritual Spells and activations of Nekroz of Trishula. Will the boost that Kozmo received be enough to defeat what many consider to be the boogeyman of the competitive scene?

Morran won the roll and chose for Hazel to go first.

Duel One:

Hazel opened with a hand of Breakthrough Skill, Kozmo Dark Destroyer, Kozmo Strawman, Reasoning, and Solemn Warning. He activated Reasoning and Morran called Level 4; Hazel immediately Flipped Kozmo Farmgirl from the top of his Deck to put it into play. He Set Solemn Warning and Breakthrough Skill before he ended his turn.

Morran drew and activated Reinforcement of the Army to add Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to his hand, then thought for a moment before he activated Nekroz Mirror to tribute the Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz and Special Summon Nekroz of Valkyrus. The effect of Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz triggered, which let Morran add Nekroz of Brionac. He activated the freshly searched Nekroz of Brionac to add Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz to his hand, but when he tried to activate the effect of Nekroz of Valkyrus, Hazel responded with Breakthrough Skill to stop it. Morran chose to Normal Summon the Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz and declared an attack with it on Kozmo Farmgirl, but Hazel activated its effect to Special Summon Kozmo Dark Destroyer from his hand! He used its effect to try to destroy Nekroz of Valkyrus, but Morran had Nekroz of Gungnir to stop it. Morran ended his turn.

Hazel drew Kozmo Goodwitch for turn and announced his phases. He Normal Summoned the Kozmo Goodwitch and used its effect to Flip down the Nekroz of Valkyrus so he could run it over then passed.

Morran drew and tried to Flip Summon his Nekroz of Valkyrus but lost out to Hazel’s Solemn Warning. Morran chose to move to Battle Phase, then declared an attack into Kozmo Goodwitch with his Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz so he could clear away his Monsters. He then banished Nekroz Mirror and Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz from his Graveyard to add Nekroz Cycle before activating Instant Fusion! He Special Summoned Elder Entity Norden which let him Special Summon Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz, but didn’t have any real options and conceded!

The Duelists shared a friendly chat back and forth as they discussed the last game. After Side Decking Morran chose to go second once again.

Duel Two:

Hazel opened with Retaliating “C”, Maxx “C”, Kozmo Farmgirl, Kozmo Strawman, and Raigeki.

Morran started with Senju of the Thousand Hands, used its effect to add Nekroz of Clausolas, then ditched the Nekroz of Clausolas for Nekroz Kaleidoscope. Next, he discarded Nekroz of Brionac to add Nekroz of Unicore, but when he tried to activate the Nekroz Kaleidoscope, Hazel responded with Retaliating “C”! The Herald of the Arc Light that Morran sent to pay for his Ritual Summon was banished, but he chose to press forward. He overlayed the Nekroz of Unicore and Senju of the Thousand Hands for Abyss Dweller then declared an attack over the Retaliating “C” using the effect of Abyss Dweller during the Battle Phase to stop Hazel from searching; Morran ended.

Hazel drew Breakthrough Skill for turn and then activated Raigeki to clear away the Abyss Dweller. He Normal Summoned Kozmo Farmgirl to declare a direct attack, managing to connect despite the abundance of damage stopping effects in Morran’s Nekroz Deck. The Kozmo Farmgirl let him add Kozmo Dark Destroyer and then in Main Phase 2 he Set the Breakthrough Skill before he ended.

Morran started off by activating Mystical Space Typhoon to blow Hazel’s Set Breakthrough Skill, then he Normal Summoned Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands and used its effect to add Nekroz of Brionac. He ditched the Nekroz of Brionac to search Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz before he slammed down Nekroz Cycle. Hazel responded with Maxx “C” and Morran Special Summoned Nekroz of Unicore by tributing his Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz. Maxx “C” let Hazel draw a Offerings to the Doomed and Morran added Nekroz of Trishula off of the effect of Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz. When Morran went to declare an attack but Hazel activated the effect of Kozmo Farmgirl to Special Summon Kozmo Dark Destroyer from his hand. Hazel activated its effect on Nekroz of Unicore but Morran stopped it with Nekroz of Trishula. He continued to attack with Nekroz of Unicore and used Nekroz of Decisive Armor to attack over the Kozmo Dark Destroyer, which Hazel then used the effect of to Special Summon Kozmo Forerunner from his Deck.

Hazel drew Kozmotown for turn and thought for a moment. He Normal Summoned Kozmo Strawman and used its effect to Special Summon Kozmo Dark Destroyer, then moved to Battle Phase. He declared an attack with Kozmo Forerunner over Nekroz of Unicore, the Kozmo Dark Destroyer attacked over Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands, and directly with Kozmo Strawman. Things got pretty spicy from there, as Hazel activated his Offerings to the Doomed to destroy his Kozmo Dark Destroyer and Special Summon a Kozmo Farmgirl from his Deck still during the Battle Phase! He declared an attack with Kozmo Farmgirl and triggered its effect to add Kozmo Dark Destroyer, but when he went to activate Kozmo Farmgirl to Special Summon it, Morran had seen enough!
