Round 1 Feature Match: Ian Fitzpatrick versus Larry Musgrove

Ian Fitzpatrick from Syracuse, New York came to Providence, Rhode Island this weekend with his Blue-Eyes White Dragon Deck, ready to compete. The release of Shining Victories has helped Blue-Eyes Decks soar to new heights, and Fitzpatrick is looking to prove that they’re competitive. Fitzpatrick is using lots of new Blue-Eyes support cards from Shining Victories, including Mausoleum of White, The White Stone of Ancients, Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon, Dragon Spirit of White, and Sage with Eyes of Blue. Now, he’s facing off against Larry Musgrove from Cincinatti, Ohio in this Round 1 Feature Match. Will the recent boost to Blue-Eyes Decks be enough to allow Fitzpatrick to overcome Musgrove and his Burning Abyss Deck? We’re about to find out. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

 

Fitzpatrick opened up with The White Stone of Ancients, Mausoleum of White, Sage with Eyes of Blue, and 2 copies of Call of the Haunted.

He activated Mausoleum of White, Set 2 cards to his back row, and then Normal Summoned Sage with Eyes of Blue. He activated his Sage’s effect to add Maiden with Eyes of Blue from his Deck to his hand. Next, he used the Mausoleum of White’s effect to gain an additional Normal Summon and Summon Maiden from his hand. Then, he used Mausoleum’s effect to target his Maiden and send Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Deck to his Graveyard. Maiden with Eyes of Blue gained 800 ATK, and then Fitzpatrick used his Maiden’s effect to Special Summon a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Deck. Next, Fitzpatrick Tuned Sage with Eyes of Blue with Blue-Eyes White Dragon to Synchro Summon Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon in Defense Position!

 

Turn 1

 

Musgrove activated Twin Twisters by discarding Speedroid Taketomborg and destroyed both of Fitzpatrick’s face-down copies of Call of the Haunted. He Set 2 cards to his back row and then passed his turn. In his End Phase, Fitzpatrick activated the effect of his Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon to Tribute it and Special Summon Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon from his Extra Deck in Defense Position.

 

Fitzpatrick drew a card and then activated the effect of his Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon to try to Special Summon a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Graveyard; but Musgrove activated Solemn Warning and paid 2000 Life Points to negate its effect. Azure-Eye Silver Dragon remained on the field, protected by its own effect. Musgrove activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Mausoleum of White in Main Phase 1, and then Fitzpatrick passed his turn with Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon still on his field.

 

Musgrove passed his turn without making a play.

 

Fitzpatrick Special Summoned Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Graveyard with the effect of his Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon in his Standby Phase and then activated Trade-In to discard a Blue-Eyes White Dragon and draw 2 cards. Next, he activated Cards of Consonance and discarded The White Stone of Ancients to draw 2 cards. Then, he activated Where Arf Thou? to add Sage with Eyes of Blue from his Deck to his hand. He Summoned it to the field and then activated Silver’s Cry to Special Summon another Blue-Eyes White Dragon to his field. The combined force of both Blue-Eyes White Dragons and Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon wiped out the rest of Musgrove’s Life Points!

He Special Summoned Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his hand and then Normal Summoned Alich, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He combined his 2 monsters to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss and then detached Rubic to send Anti-Spell Fragrance, Solemn Warning, and Twin Twisters from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Dante’s effect. Next, he discarded Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his hand to Xyz Summon Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal. He Set a card to his back row and then added Tour Guide From the Underworld from his Deck to his hand in his End Phase with Scarm’s effect.

 

Turn 1 Beatrice

 

Fitzpatrick opened up with Twin Twisters, Soul Charge, Swing of Memories, Anti-Spell Fragrance, and 2 copies of Maiden with Eyes of Blue. He Summoned a Maiden to his field and then Set 4 cards to his back row. In his End Phase, Musgrove activated Beatrice’s effect by detaching Dante. He sent Cir to his Graveyard with Beatrice’s effect, and then used Dante’s effect to return Cir to his hand, and used Cir’s effect to Special Summon Dante to his field in Defense Position.

 

Musgrove Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld next, and activated its effect to Special Summon Fiendish Rhino Warrior from his Deck to his field in Attack Position. He combined Tour Guide with his Rhino Warrior to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss in Attack Position and detached his Rhino Warrior from Dante to activate Dante’s effect and send Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Maxx “C”, and another Fiendish Rhino Warrior from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard. He activated his Fiendish Rhino Warrior’s effect to send Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck to his Graveyard and then used Graff’s effect to send Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck. Barbar destroyed itself since Beatrice was on the field, and Musgrove banished Graff, Scarm, and Libic from his Graveyard to inflict 900 points of damage to Fitzpatrick. He activated Raigeki to destroy Maiden with Eyes of Blue, and then discarded Cir to Summon another Beatrice to the field. He switched all of his monsters into Attack Position and then attacked directly with Dante and both Beatrices to wipe out Fitzpatrick’s 7100 Life Points!

Duel Three

 

Fitzpatrick opened up Duel 3 with Maxx “C”, Trade-In, Twin Twisters, Sage with Eyes of Blue, and Cards of Consonance. He Normal Summoned his Sage and activated its effect to add The White Stone of Legend from his Deck to his hand. Next, he activated Cards of Consonance to discard The White Stone of Legend and draw Swing of Memories and Raigeki from his Deck. Then, he used the effect of The White Stone of Legend to add Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Deck to his hand. Fitzpatrick activated Trade-In next, discarding his Blue-Eyes White Dragon to draw Anti-Spell Fragrance and another Sage with Eyes of Blue. He activated Swing of Memories to Special Summon Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Graveyard and then discarded a Sage with Eyes of Blue from his hand to activate its effect and send his on-field Sage to the Graveyard and Special Summon Dragon Spirit of White from his Deck. He combined his Blue-Eyes White Dragon with Dragon Spirit of White to Xyz Summon Number 62: Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon, and then upgraded Number 62 into Number 95: Galaxy-Eyes Dark Matter Dragon. He activated its effect to send The White Stone of Ancients, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon from his Deck to his Graveyard, forcing Musgrove to banish 3 monsters from his Deck. Musgrove banished Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit and 2 copies of Maxx “C” from his Deck. Next, Fitzpatrick Set Anti-Spell Fragrance and Raigeki. In his End Phase, he Special Summoned a Dragon Spirit of White from his Deck with the effect of The White Stone of Ancients.

 

Musgrove drew a card and then Fitzpatrick flipped Anti-Spell Fragrance. Musgrove Special Summoned Farfa from his hand, and Fitzpatrick Chained Maxx “C” to its effect in order to draw Burst Stream of Destruction from his Deck. Next, Musgrove Normal Summoned Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He Set a card to his back row and then ended his turn. In his End Phase, Fitzpatrick activated Twin Twisters and discarded Burst Stream of Destruction to destroy Musgrove’s face-down Solemn Strike.

 

Fitzpatrick drew Blue-Eyes White Dragon next turn and then activated Number 95’s effect to allow it to attack twice. He attacked Graff with Number 95, dropping Musgrove to 5000 Life Points and allowing Musgrove to Special Summon Scarm from his Deck in Defense Position with Graff’s effect. Next, Number 95 attacked and destroyed Scarm. Finally, Dragon Spirit of White attacked and destroyed Farfa, and Musgrove used Farfa’s effect to banish Number 95 until the End Phase. In the End Phase, Number 95 returned to the field without its Xyz Materials, and Musgrove added Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck to his hand with Scarm’s effect.

 

Musgrove Special Summoned Rubic from his hand and then Normal Summoned Fiendish Rhino Warrior. He combined his 2 monsters to Xyz Summon Dante in Attack Position and then detached Fiendish Rhino Warrior to send 2 Twin Twisters and Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Dante’s effect. He used Cir’s effect to Special Summon Graff from his Graveyard in Defense Position and Rhino’s effect to send Scarm from his Deck to his Graveyard. He discarded Cir to Special Summon Beatrice from his Extra Deck, and then Graff destroyed itself with its own effect. Graff Special Summoned Barbar from the Deck, and Musgrove banished Scarm, Farfa, and Cir from his Graveyard to inflict 900 points of damage to Fitzpatrick. Next, he attacked Dragon Spirit of White with Beatrice, and Fitzpatrick used his Dragon Spirit’s effect to Tribute it and Special Summon Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his hand in Attack Position! Beatrice attacked the Blue-Eyes instead, destroying herself. Musgrove added Cir to his hand with Dante’s effect, and Special Summoned Dante, Pilgrim of the Burning Abyss from his Extra Deck with Beatrice’s effect. Next, he banished Beatrice and Rubic from his Graveyard to Special Summon Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning! He used his Black Luster Soldier’s effect to banish Number 95 from the Duel, and then added Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck to his hand with the effect of Scarm in his End Phase.

 

Fitzpatrick drew Maxx “C” next turn. He flipped his face-down Raigeki to destroy Musgrove’s monsters, and Musgrove Chained his Pilgrim’s effect to send Farfa from his hand to his Graveyard and draw a card. Raigeki destroyed Musgrove’s monsters, and then Farfa banished Blue-Eyes White Dragon until the End Phase. Fitzpatrick banished The White Stone of Ancients from his Graveyard to add a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Graveyard to his hand, and then returned his banished Blue-Eyes White Dragon to the field in his End Phase.

 

Musgrove Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect to Special Summon Fiendish Rhino Warrior from his Deck. Next, he combined his Rhino Warrior with Tour Guide to Xyz Summon Dante in Defense Position, and then sent Cir from his hand to his Graveyard to Special Summon Beatrice in Defense Position. He used Cir’s effect to Special Summon another Dante to his field in Defense Position. He Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.

 

Fitzpatrick drew Where Arf Thou? and Set it. He attacked Dante with Blue-Eyes, and Musgrove used Dante’s effect to add Cir from his Graveyard to his hand. Musgrove activated Beatrice’s effect in the End Phase to send Scarm from his Deck to his Graveyard by detaching an Xyz Material from Beatrice. He used Scarm’s effect to add Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck to his hand.

 

Musgrove flipped his face-down Raigeki to destroy Blue-Eyes White Dragon! He Normal Summoned Cir next, and Cir destroyed itself with its own effect. Musgrove used Cir’s effect to Special Summon Dante back to the field in Attack Position, and then attacked directly with Dante and Beatrice, dropping Fitzpatrick down to 3600 Life Points. Still in his Battle Phase, Musgrove detached Dante from Beatrice to send Chaos Trap Hole from his Deck to his Graveyard, and used Dante’s effect to add Cir from his Graveyard to his hand. Dante switched into Defense Position and then Musgrove Set a card to his back row. Finally, Musgrove discarded Libic from his hand to Special Summon Beatrice in Defense Position, replacing Dante, before ending his turn.

Fitzpatrick drew Trade-In, but couldn’t activate it due to the effect of Anti-Spell Fragrance. He promptly conceded, unable to make any useful plays.
