Round 2 Feature Match: Alex Vansant versus Julio Manjarrez

May 28th, 2016

Alex Vansant from Detroit, Michigan is using a rather unconventional strategy this weekend. In a field dominated by Kozmos, Monarchs, Burning Abyss, and Pendulum Monsters, Vansant is using a Cyber Dragon Deck. Vansant boasts an excellent matchup against Kozmo Decks, since he has easy access to Cyber Dragon and Chimeratech Fortress Dragon, allowing him to easily get rid of big Kozmo Machine-type monsters without setting off their effects; but even against other popular Decks, Vansant’s Cyber Dragon Deck is capable of taking a quick win by swarming the field with Cyber Dragons and leaning on Cyber Dragon Nova and Cyber Dragon Infinity to achieve victory. Vansant managed to win his first round, and now he’s facing off against New York’s Julio Manjarrez and his Performapal Odd-Eyes Deck in this Round 2 Feature Match. Who will prevail? We’re about to find out. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Vansant opened up Duel 1 with Cyber Repair Plant, Chaos Trap Hole, Instant Fusion, Twin Twisters, and Cyber Dragon Core.

Alex Vansant

He Set Chaos Trap Hole and Twin Twisters before passing his turn.

Manjarrez activated Performapal Monkeyboard in his Pendulum Zone and Vansant activated Twin Twisters and discarded Cyber Dragon Core from his hand to destroy the Monkeyboard and send it to the Extra Deck. Next, Manjarrez activated Performapal Odd-Eyes Unicorn in his Pendulum Zone. He activated Draco Face-Off next, revealing Master Pendulum, the Dracoslayer and Vector Pendulum, the Dracoverlord from his Deck. Vector Pendulum won the face-off, and Manjarrez placed it in his Pendulum Zone while sending Master Pendulum to his Extra Deck. He Summoned Performapal Secondonkey next, and activated its effect to add Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer from his Deck to his hand. Next, he Pendulum Summoned Master Pendulum from his Extra Deck and Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer from his hand. He used his Pendulum Sorcerer’s effect to destroy both of the cards in his Pendulum Zone and add Performapal Lizardraw and Performapal Guitartle from his Deck to his hand. He attacked directly with Pendulum Sorcerer, Master Pendulum, and Secondonkey to drop Vansant down to 3450 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, he activated Guitartle in his Pendulum Zone. Next, he activated Lizardraw, and used Guitartle’s effect to draw a card. He used Lizardraw’s effect next, destroying it and drawing another card. He activated Magical Abductor in his Pendulum Zone next, and then activated Sky Iris, adding a Spell Counter to the Abductor. Next, he used the effect of Sky Iris to destroy his Guitartle and add Odd-Eyes Unicorn to his hand. He activated the Unicorn in his Pendulum Zone and added another Spell Counter to his Abductor. Next, he sent Master Pendulum and Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer to his Extra Deck to Summon Dinoster Power, the Mighty Dracoslayer in Defense Position.

Vansant drew Galaxy Soldier and then activated Cyber Repair Plant. Manjarrez added a Spell Counter to his Magical Abductor and Vansant added Cyber Dragon to his hand with its effect. Manjarrez activated the effect of Maxx “C” after Vansant added Cyber Dragon to his hand. Vansant banished Cyber Dragon Core from his Graveyard to Special Summon Cyber Dragon from his Deck in Attack Position, allowing Manjarrez to draw a card. Next, Vansant discarded Cyber Dragon from his hand to Special Summon Galaxy Soldier in Defense Position. Manjarrez drew another card, and Vansant used his Soldier’s effect to add another Galaxy Soldier to his hand. Next, Vansant combined his 2 monsters to Xyz Summon Cyber Dragon Nova, allowing Manjarrez to draw another card with the effect of Maxx “C”. Vansant detached an Xyz Material from Cyber Dragon Nova to Special Summon another Cyber Dragon from his Graveyard, giving Manjarrez another draw. Then, Vansant activated Instant Fusion and paid 1000 Life Points to Special Summon Panzer Dragon from his Extra Deck. Manjarrez drew a card thanks to Maxx “C” and added another Spell Counter to his Magical Abductor. Vansant combined Panzer Dragon with Cyber Dragon to Xyz Summon Number 61: Volcasaurus, allowing Manjarrez to draw another card, and then upgraded Cyber Dragon Nova into Cyber Dragon Infinity and used its effect to attach Secondonkey to the Infinity as an Xyz Material. Next, he used Volcasaurus’s effect to destroy Dinoster Power and inflict 2000 points of damage to Manjarrez’s Life Points. Then, Vansant upgraded Number 61: Volcasaurus into Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger and attacked directly with Cyber Dragon Infinity and Gaia Dragon to drop Manjarrez down to 700 Life Points.

Gaia Infinity

Manjarrez removed 3 Spell Counters from Magical Abductor to add Luster Pendulum, the Dracoslayer from his Deck to his hand. Next, he Summoned Archfiend Eccentrick and activated its effect to try to destroy Cyber Dragon Infinity; but Vansant negated the effect with Cyber Dragon Infinity. Manjarrez used Sky Iris to destroy his Magical Abductor and add Performapal Odd-Eyes Light Phoenix. Next, he activated Archfiend Eccentrick in his Pendulum Zone, and used its effect to destroy Vansant’s face-down Chaos Trap Hole. Vansant promptly conceded, knowing there was no way he’d survive the turn after letting Manjarrez draw so many cards with Maxx “C”.

Vansant drew Instant Fusion and then flipped his face-down Twin Twisters. He discarded Brilliant Fusion and destroyed Manjarrez’s face-down System Down and Odd-Eyes Fusion. Vansant Set Instant Fusion before passing his turn.

Manjarrez flipped Sky Iris and then Summoned Guiding Ariadne. He attacked directly with Vector Pendulum and Guiding Ariadne, dropping Vansant down to 4400 Life Points. He Set a card to his back row before passing his turn.

Vansant flipped Instant Fusion and paid 1000 Life Points to Special Summon Panzer Dragon from his Extra Deck. Next, he Summoned Cyber Dragon Drei and activated its effect to increase its Level to 5. He combined Drei with Panzer Dragon to Xyz Summon Cyber Dragon Nova and then activated its effect by detaching an Xyz Material to Summon Cyber Dragon Drei from his Graveyard. Next, he attempted to upgrade his Cyber Dragon Nova into Cyber Dragon Infinity; but Manjarrez flipped Solemn Strike and gave up 1500 Life Points to negate its Summon! Vansant attacked and destroyed Guiding Ariadne with Drei, sending it to Manjarrez’s Extra Deck. Manjarrez activated its effect to reveal Solemn Warning and 2 copies of Solemn Strike from his Deck, and Vansant added a Solemn Strike to Manjarrez’s hand.

Manjarrez attacked and destroyed Drei with Vector Pendulum and then Set a card to his back row.
