YCS champion Tyree Tinsley from Virginia is one of the six Duelists in attendance today who won a YCS Very Important Player Qualifier at his local Official Tournament Store. By winning a YCS VIP Qualifier, he started the tournament in Round 3 instead of Round 1, having already been awarded wins for Rounds 1 and 2. He’s running a Monarch deck with a variety of supporting Tribute engines including Speedroids and Super Quantals. His opponent is Evan LaBarge from Attleboro Massachusetts running Fire King Kozmos.

Tinsley won the roll and elected to have LaBarge start.

Game 1

LaBarge started with Allure of Darkness, drawing 2 cards and banishing Kozmo Dark Planet. LaBarge followed-up with Terraforming, searching for Fire King Island, activating it and using the effect to destroy Kozmo Landwalker from hand and search Fire King Avatar Garunix. Kozmo Landwalker was banished to activate its effect to Special Summon Kozmo Strawman from the Deck. Strawman’s effect was activated, paying 500 LP to Special Summon the banished Landwalker. Kozmo Tincan was Normal Summoned, a Spell/Trap was set, and play moved to the End Phase where Landwalker was destroyed, then banished to Special Summon another Kozmo Tincan with this one in Defense Position. One Tincan activated, adding another Landwalker, and the second Tincan was used to add Kozmo Dark Destroyer. Two Kozmo Slipriders, a Kozmoll Dark Lady and a Dark Destroyer were sent to the Graveyard during this sequence.

Tinsley started off by Special Summoning Super Quantum Red Layer, followed by Emergency Teleport for Super Quantum Blue Layer in Attack Position. Super Quantum Blue Layer’s effect added another Super Quantum Red Layer to hand. Pantheism of the Monarchs came down next, discarding The Prime Monarch for 2 new cards. Pantheism was banished from the Graveyard, revealing 3 copies of Tenacity of the Monarchs, one of them being added to his hand. Tenacity of the Monarchs was activated, revealing Erebus the Underworld Monarch and searching for The Monarchs Stormforth. Twin Twisters came down, discarding Kuraz the Light Monarch targeting Fire King Island and the face-down Call of the Haunted, which was chained targeting Kozmo Dark Destroyer. LaBarge also chained a Kozmo Tincan to Special Summon a Kozmo Landwalker from his hand. In the next chain, Fire King Island destroyed all of LaBarge’s monsters and Landwalker’s effect Special Summoned Kozmoll Dark Lady while Dark Destroyer’s effect brought out a Kozmo Soartroopers. Tinsley pressed on, Special Summoning The Prime Monarch by banishing an in-Grave Tenacity of the Monarchs. Tinsley considered his Extra Deck options before overlaying The Prime Monarch and Super Quantum Red Layer for Super Quantal Mech Beast Magnaliger! Moving into the Battle Phase, Magnaliger attacked Dark Lady, but LaBarge banished Soartroopers to Special Summon Kozmo Dark Destroyer from hand, whose effect to destroy a monster targeted Magnaliger, prompting Tinsley to chain Magnaliger’s effect, but LaBarge chained Dark Lady to negate and destroy the Magnaliger! Super Quantum Red Layer activated in the Graveyard, Special Summoning Magnaliger. In Main Phase 2, both Blue Layer and Magnaliger were Tributed for Erebus the Underworld Monarch! Tinsley used its effect to shuffle Kozmo Dark Destroyer into the Deck. He set The Monarchs Stormforth and passed.

LaBarge proceeded to Normal Summon Kozmo Strawman and used its effect to Special Summon the banished Kozmo Dark Destroyer. Dark Destroyer attacked and destroyed Erebus, then Kozmo Strawman and Kozmoll Dark Lady attacked directly. In the End Phase, Dark Destroyer was destroyed, then banished to Special Summon Kozmo Sliprider which was used to blast away Tinsley’s The Monarchs Stormforth.

Tinsley started the next turn by banishing Pantheism of the Monarchs from the Graveyard to reveal Return of the Monarchs, The Prime Monarch and Pantheism of the Monarchs. LaBarge chose The Prime Monarch to add to Tinsley’s hand of Super Quantum Red Layer, Maxx “C” and Emergency Teleport. Super Quantum Red Layer was Special Summoned, adding the in-grave Super Quantum Red Layer back to hand. The Prime Monarch was Special Summoned out of the Graveyard by banishing a Return of the Monarchs from the Graveyard, then Tinsley used the 2 monsters to Xyz Summon Tiras, Keeper of Genesis! Tiras attacked and destroyed Dark Lady. At the end of the Battle Phase, Tiras’s effect destroyed Kozmo Strawman. He then added his in-Grave Erebus the Underworld Monarch back to his hand by sending a The Prime Monarch from his hand to the Graveyard. Emergency Teleport came down, Special Summoning Super Quantum Blue Layer, then both Tiras and Super Quantum Blue Layer were Tributed to Summon Erebus! Tinsley used Erebus’s effect to send Kozmo Sliprider back to the deck, while Super Quantum Red Layer’s effect Special Summoned Magnaliger from the Graveyard. (Red Layer was the remaining Xyz Material on Tiras, and Red Layer only needs to be sent to the graveyard, it will still trigger if sent to the Graveyard as an Xyz Material.)

LaBarge activated Emergency Teleport on his turn, but Tinsley chained Maxx “C”. LaBarge Special Summoned Soartroopers from the Deck. Before LaBarge could proceed, Tinsley activated Ehther the Heavenly Monarch’s effect from his hand, Tributing Erebus the Underworld Monarch. Ehther’s effect Special Summon Kuraz the Light Monarch, but before Tinsley could declare targets from Kuraz’s effect, LaBarge declared that he was conceding.

Game 2

LaBarge elected to go first with about 10 minutes left in the round.

He set a Spell/Trap and Normal Summoned Kozmo Soartroopers.

Tinsley drew for turn and activated Twin Twisters, discarding The Prime Monarch, destroying LaBarge’s face-down Kozmojo. Tinsley then Summoned Mithra the Thunder Vassal, giving LaBarge a 800 ATK/1000 DEF Vassal Token. Mithra was Tributed to Summon Majesty’s Fiend, which attacked and destroyed Soartroopers.

LaBarge fired right back with Interrupted Kaiju Slumber, clearing the field and Special Summoning a Kaiju to both sides of the field. LaBarge gave himself a Thunder King the Lightning Strike Kaiju while he gave Tinsley a Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju. LaBarge then Tributed Thunder King for Kozmo Sliprider and attacked directly. When LaBarge activated Emergency Teleport, Tinsley activated the Maxx “C” in response to give himself a draw. Kozmo Farmgirl came out, attacked directly, searched for Kozmo Dark Destroyer with her effect, then Kozmo Farmgirl was banished to Special Summon Kozmo Dark Destroyer, whose effect destroyed Kozmo Sliprider who Special Summoned Kozmo Tincan from the Deck in Defense position. Tinsley drew 2 additional cards for Maxx “C”’s effect. Kozmo Dark Destroyer attacked directly for another 3000 LP, leaving the Duel at 3400 to 6100. In the End Phase, Kozmo Tincan’s effect was used to reveal Kozmo Dark Destroyer, Kozmo Landwalker and Kozmoll Dark Lady. Kozmo Landwalker was added to hand, the others were sent to the Graveyard.

Tinsley Special Summoned Super Quantum Red Layer, activated Return of the Monarchs, then Tributed for Kuraz the Light Monarch. Tinsley used Return to add Ehther the Heavenly Monarch from Deck to hand, then Kuraz’s effect destroyed Return, allowing Tinsley to draw a card, but it was no help against LaBarge’s field and with 5 minutes left in the round and behind in Life Points, Tinsley decided to concede the game and go to game 3.

Game 3

Tinsley elected to have LaBarge go first. LaBarge Normal Summoned Kozmo Strawman, set a Spell/Trap and passed.

Tinsley opened up with Super Quantum Red Layer, Erebus the Underworld Monarch, The Monarchs Stormforth, Kuraz the Light Monarch, Ehther the Heavenly Monarch and Drowning Mirror Force. Tinsley Special Summoned Red Layer, then used The Monarchs Stormforth, then Tributed Kozmo Soartroopers and Red Layer to Tribute Summon Erebus the Underworld Monarch! Erebus sent Pantheism of the Monarchs and The Prime Monarch to the Graveyard to shuffle back a card in LaBarge’s hand. Pantheism of the Monarchs was banished to reveal 3 copies of Tenacity of the Monarchs. One of them was added to hand and then activated to add The Monarchs Stormforth to hand. Tinsley set The Monarchs Stormforth and Drowning Mirror Force before passing. At this point, time in the round was called.

LaBarge Normal Summoned Kozmo Soartroopers, prompting Tinsley to activate his in-hand Ehther the Heavenly Monarch and chain his set The Monarchs Stormforth. Ehther the Heavenly Monarch Special Summoned Kuraz the Light Monarch, whose effect destroyed itself and Erebus the Underworld Monarch to draw Tinsley 2 cards. LaBarge pressed on by activating Emergency Teleport, Special Summoning another Soartroopers from the Deck. He paid 1000 LP to Special Summon the other Soartroopers from the Graveyard, and that Soartroopers paid another 1000 LP to Special Summon Kozmo Strawman. The two Soartroopers were used to Xyz Summon The Phantom Knights of Break Sword. He used Break Sword’s effect, detaching an Xyz Material to target Kozmo Strawman and Ehther the Heavenly Monarch, then LaBarge chained Kozmo Strawman to dodge the destruction effect and Special Summon Kozmoll Dark Lady. LaBarge then attacked with Break Sword, but Tinsley flipped up the clutch Drowning Mirror Force, shuffling both Kozmoll Dark Lady and Break Sword into the Deck! With no answer to the field and no machines in hand to push for damage, LaBarge extended the handshake!

Tinsley moves on with his first win, giving him a record of 3-0!
