Round 9 Feature Match: Dave Hayes versus Brandon Funderburke

May 29th, 2016

Welcome to day 2! We’re playing 2 rounds of Swiss today before cutting to the Top 32. Every Duelist left in the tournament wants to get as many wins as possible to have a better chance at making the playoff cut. Dave Hayes is from around Syracuse, New York running Majespecters and Brandon Funderburke is from Long Island, New York with his Monarch deck and both are here to go as far as they can. Who will come out on top? Let’s find out!

Game 1

Funderburke won the roll and elected to go first. Before we could start, however, the table was randomly selected for a Deck check where there were no issues with either player’s deck.

Funderburke started off with Edea the Heavenly Squire, using its effect to Summon Eidos the Underworld Squire from the Deck. Both were Tributed for Erebus the Underworld Monarch whose effect was used to send Pantheism of the Monarchs and The Prime Monarch from the Deck to shuffle back a Performapal Lizardraw from Hayes’s hand. Pantheism was banished to reveal 3 copies of The Monarchs Stormforth, one of which was added to hand. Funderburke set 2 Spell/Traps and passed.

Hayes started off with Chaos Trap Hole, Majespecter Toad – Ogama, Majespecter Fox – Kyubi, Solemn Strike and Solemn Warning. He Normal Summoned Majespecter Fox – Kyubi, using its effect to add Majespecter Tornado from Deck to hand. He set 4, but before leaving the Main Phase, Funderburke activates Escalation of the Monarchs and chained The Monarchs Stormforth, Tributing Majespecter Fox – Kyubi to Summon Super Quantum Red Layer. Hayes passed.

Hayes

Funderburke drew to 2 cards in hand. Erebus the Underworld Monarch switched to Defense Position and Super Quantum Red Layer attacked directly for 2000 damage, putting the Duel at 6000 LP to 8000 LP.

Hayes drew Performapal Guitartle then Normal Summoned Majespecter Toad – Ogama, using its effect to set Majespecter Sonics directly from the Deck. Majespecter Toad – Ogama then attacked the Defense Position Erebus the Underworld Monarch.

Funderburke banished Eidos the Underworld Squire but Hayes negated it with Solemn Strike, dropping to 4500 LP. Erebus’s effect was used to discard Return of the Monarchs to add Erebus back to the hand. Return was banished from the Graveyard to Special Summon The Prime Monarch from the Graveyard as a monster. Super Quantum Red Layer and The Prime Monarch were Tributed for Erebus the Underworld Monarch but the Summon was negated by Chaos Trap Hole, dropping Hayes down to 2500 LP.

Funderburke

Hayes drew Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku and Normal Summoned it, searching for Majespecter Cat – Nekomata. Majespecter Cat – Nekomata and Performapal Guitartle were placed in the Pendulum Zones and Funderburke chained Maxx “C”. Hayes Pendulum Summoned Majespecter Fox – Kyubi from the Extra Deck, using its effect to add Majespecter Tempest from the Deck to hand. Funderburke used The Prime Monarch to block the attacks. In Main Phase 2, Majespecter Toad – Ogama and Majespecter Fox – Kyubi were used to Xyz Summon Lightning Chidori whose first effect put Funderburke’s face-down Spell/Trap on the bottom of his Deck and the second effect sent The Prime Monarch on top of the deck.

Funderburke set a Spell/Trap and passed.

On Hayes’s next turn, he used Lightning Chidori to spin Escalation of the Monarchs to the top of the Deck and attacked with both Chidori and Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku. He set his newly drawn Solemn Strike and passed with a full back row.

Funderburke drew, set a Spell/Trap and passed.

Hayes dree Majespecter Cat – Nekomata, used its effect to search in the End Phase and attacked with all 3 monsters. In the End Phase, Hayes added another Raccoon to hand.

Funderburke drew to 3 cards in hand. He activated Return of the Monarchs, then flipped-up his set The Monarchs Stormforth. Hayes’s Raccoon was Tributed for Majesty’s Fiend whose Summon was negated by Solemn Warning, dropping Hayes to a precarious 500 LP, but with Funderburke at 1700 LP, there was enough damage on the field to end the game on the next turn, and with no answer to the field, Funderburke conceded.

Game 2

Funderburke elected to go first. He set 3 Spell/Traps and passed.

Hayes started with Performapal Monkeyboard, 2 copies of Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku, Majespecter Toad – Ogama Majespecter Fox – Kyubi and Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer. He Normal Summoned one of the Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbukus and used its effect to search for Majespecter Cat – Nekomata. He then activated Performapal Monkeyboard and used its effect to add Performapal Lizardraw to his hand which was promptly placed in the other Pendulum Zone. He Pendulum Summoned Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer in Attack Position and Majespecter Cat – Nekomata in Defense Position. Majespecter Cat – Nekomata’s effect allowed Hayes to search for a Majespecter card in the End Phase. Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer’s effect destroyed the scales and added Performapal Guitartle and another Performapal Lizardraw. He then activated Performapal Guitartle and Performapal Lizardraw for one draw, then used Performapal Lizardraw to destroy itself for another draw. Both Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer and Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku attacked directly for 2700 damage. In Main Phase 2, Majespecter Cat – Nekomata and Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku were used to Xyz Summon Totem Bird. 2 Spell/Cards were set. Before moving to the End Phase, Funderburke activated Royal Decree. In the End Phase, Majespecter Cat – Nekomata searched another Majespecter Cat – Nekomata.

Funderburke drew, set a monster and passed.

Hayes drew Solemn Strike. He placed Majespecter Cat – Nekomata in the vacant Pendulum Zone, then Pendulum Summoned Majespecter Fox – Kyubi, Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku and Majespecter Toad – Ogama from his hand. That was enough to seal the game and the match!

Hayes moves on with a 7-1-1 record with Majespecters!
