YCS Origins – Round 2 Feature Match: Edwin Davis versus Robert Atwood
Edwin Davis is here from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, wielding the power of the mighty Blue-Eyes White Dragon! He’s using some interesting cards other Blue-Eyes Duelists aren’t playing, such as Malefic Blue-Eyes White Dragon and The Claw of Hermos! He’s facing Robert Atwood from Indianapolis, Indiana, using a Monarch Deck. Monarchs have been a force to be reckoned once again, since their awesome new cards in the Emperor of Darkness Structure Deck. Can the new Blue-Eyes Deck handle the established Monarchs?
Duel 1
Atwood won the dice roll and chose to play first. He played Pantheism of the Monarchs, discarding The Monarchs Stormforth. He Special Summoned Super Quantum Red Layer, then used Brilliant Fusion, sending Gem-Knight Garnet and Edea the Heavenly Squire to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon Gem-Knight Seraphinite. He banished Pantheism from the Graveyard, revealing Pantheism, Stormforth, and Return of the Monarchs. Davis chose to give him Pantheism. Atwood played it, discarding a Stormforth. He stacked Red Layer and Seraphinite for Artifact Durendal, using its effect to give each player a new hand. Atwood played his third Pantheism, discarding The Prime Monarch. He used Tenacity of the Monarchs, revealing Erebus the Underworld Monarch in his hand, to add his third Stormforth to his hand.
Davis had a hand of Upstart Goblin, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Sage with Eyes of Blue, Silver’s Cry, Soul Charge, and Trade-In. He played Trade-In, discarding Blue-Eyes White Dragon to draw Malefic Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Dragon Spirit of White. Upstart Goblin gave him Swing of Memories. He Normal Summoned Sage with Eyes of Blue. He used its effect, and Artifact Durendal’s effect changed Sage’s effect, making it destroy Brilliant Fusion instead. Davis played Swing of Memories on Blue-Eyes, and Atwood Chained Maxx “C”! Davis sent Blue-Eyes White Dragon to wipe out Durendal. In Main Phase 2, Davis Synchro Summoned Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon, in Defense Position! Davis Set Silver’s Cry to end the turn. Atwood tried to Special Summon The Prime Monarch from the Graveyard, and it was negated by Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon.
Atwood activated Pantheism from his Graveyard, and Davis negated it with Spirit Dragon. Atwood Special Summon The Prime Monarch, then played The Monarchs Stormforth! He Tributed both players’ monsters for Erebus, sending another Prime Monarch and Return of the Monarchs to the Graveyard for its effect. Erebus shuffled away Davis’s Soul Charge. Erebus attacked directly, but Davis used Silver’s Cry to put a Blue-Eyes White Dragon in his path! Atwood Set a back row card to finish.
Davis drew the Soul Charge he’d shuffled away moments earlier! During the Standby Phase, Atwood used his face-down copy of The Prime Monarch, returning two cards from his Graveyard to his Deck to draw a card. Davis played Soul Charge, taking 2000 damage to bring forth Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon and Sage with Eyes of Blue! He used his Spirit Dragon’s effect, replacing it with Michael, the Arch-Lightsworn! Davis paid 1000 Life Points to use Michael’s effect and banish Erebus. He tuned Sage with Eyes of Blue to Michael for Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon! He couldn’t attack due to Soul Charge, and Atwood Special Summoned The Prime Monarch in the End Phase.
Atwood used Pantheism in his Graveyard, revealing Stormforth and 2 Tenacity. Davis chose to give him Stormforth. He played it, Tributing Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon and The Prime Monarch for Erebus! Erebus shuffled Blue-Eyes White Dragon back into the Deck! Erebus attacked, leaving Davis with 2200 Life Points.
Davis drew his second Malefic Blue-Eyes White Dragon, but had no way to play it.
Duel 2
Davis chose to play second. Atwood played Tenacity of the Monarchs, revealing Ehther the Heavenly Monarch, to search for Return of the Monarchs. He played Edea the Heavenly Squire, which Special Summoned Eidos the Underworld Squire. He played Return, and Tribute Summoned Ehther. Return, he put Erebus the Underworld Monarch in his hand. With Ehther, he sent Pantheism and The Prime Monarch to Special Summon Kuraz the Light Monarch. Kuraz destroyed itself and Return, giving Atwood two fresh cards. He banished Pantheism from his Graveyard, selecting Return, Prime Monarch, and Tenacity. Davis let him have Return. Atwood discarded it immediately to play Pantheism. He Special Summoned The Prime Monarch from his Graveyard, and played Instant Fusion! He Special Summoned Panzer Dragon, and stacked it with The Prime Monarch for Artifact Durendal. Atwood Set two cards to the back row.
Davis’s hand was Upstart Goblin, Flamvell Guard, Silver’s Cry, Foolish Burial, The White Stone of Ancients, and Cards of Consonance. He played Cards of Consonance, discarding The White Stone of Ancients, to draw Effect Veiler and Mausoleum of White. Upstart Goblin gave him Mask of Restrict. He used Foolish Burial, sending Dragon Spirit of White to the Graveyard. Davis played Mausoleum of White, and played Silver’s Cry. Atwood chained Maxx “C”. Silver’s Cry brought forth Dragon Spirit of White, and it banished Atwood’s Set Chaos Trap Hole. Davis used Mausoleum on his Dragon Spirit of White, sending Blue-Eyes White Dragon to the Graveyard – Dragon Spirit of White went up to 3300 ATK! When Davis went to the Battle Phase, Atwood used Artifact Durendal’s effect to give each player a new hand. Davis drew Mask of Restrict, Flamvell Guard, and Silver’s Cry. Davis sent Dragon Spirit of White to destroy Ehther. Davis Set Mask of Restrict and Silver’s Cry, and used The White Stone of Ancients to Special Summon another Dragon Spirit of White! It banished Atwood’s Set Pantheism. Atwood Special Summoned The Prime Monarch in the End Phase, right as the round timer ended! Now the Duel had only five turns remaining, with the winner determined by who had the higher Life Points.
Davis flipped up Mask of Restrict in the Standby Phase. Atwood used Durendal’s effect again for a new hand. Davis got Dragon Shrine. Atwood banished Pantheism from his Graveyard, taking Stomforth to his hand. “That was stupid…” he remarked, after he realized Mask of Restrict would prevent anything useful from happening with The Monarchs Stormforth. He pressed on, using Durendal to Xyz Summon Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger, and he took out one Dragon Spirit of White.
Davis drew Dark Hole. He played Dragon Shrine, sending Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Malefic Blue-Eyes White Dragon to the Graveyard. Next, he used The White Stone of Ancients to add his Malefic monster to his hand, and Atwood used Maxx “C”. Davis Chained to that with Silver’s Cry, reviving Blue-Eyes White Dragon! Blue-Eyes destroyed Gaia Dragon, and Dragon Spirit of White destroyed The Prime Monarch. In Main Phase 2, Davis Xyz Summoned Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy!
Atwood Special Summoned Super Quantum Red Layer and The Prime Monarch, and Xyz Summoned Number 61: Volcasaurus! It wiped out Titanic Galaxy with its effect, dropping Davis to 4900 Life Points. Atwood led with 7100 Life Points. He Set one card to his back row, and banished Eidos from his Graveyard to Special Summon Edea in Defense Position.
Davis drew Silver’s Cry. He played Dark Hole, and Edea’s effect put Pantheism in Atwood’s hand. Davis continued, and Special Summoned Malefic Blue-Eyes White Dragon! When it hit the field, Atwood used The Monarchs Stormforth (Not that it would help with Mask of Restrict on the field). Davis used Mausoleum of White, sending Flamvell Guard to the Graveyard to give Malefic Blue-Eyes a bit more ATK. He played Silver’s Cry on Blue-Eyes next, and Atwood responded by Special Summoning The Prime Monarch.
Malefic Blue-Eyes destroyed The Prime Monarch. Unfortunately, the regular Blue-Eyes couldn’t attack due to the Malefic’s effect. Davis Xyz Summoned Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand, but it was in vain! With no way for Davis to even up the Life Points, Atwood took the Match!
Robert Atwood is the victor, with Monarchs!
