YCS Origins – Round 6: Jonny Nagel versus Jake Phinney

June 18th, 2016

The recent most popular build of Burning Abyss is actually a mixture of Burning Abyss with Phantom Knights and Speedroids. This Match pits two great Duelists in a Burning Abyss mirror match! It’s Colorado’s Jonny Nagel, up against North Carolina’s Jake Phinney.

Duel 1

Nagel won the dice roll, and chose to play first. He Normal Summoned The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots, with two back row cards.

Phinney had a hand of Foolish Burial, Vanity’s Emptiness, Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Tour Guide From the Underworld, Speedroid Terrortop, and drew Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He Special Summoned Terrortop in Defense Position, adding Speedroid Taketomborg to his hand. He Special Summoned Taketomborg, and Xyz Summoned Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. Nagel thought a while, and decided to flip Solemn Warning. Phinney played Foolish Burial, and Nagel flipped Mask Change II! He played out Masked HERO Dark Law, and Phinney had to banish The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves. Phinney continued, playing Tour Guide From the Underworld to Special Summon Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck. He Xyz Summoned The Phantom Knights of Break Sword, and it destroyed itself and Dark Law. Graff’s effect Special Summoned Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the Deck, and Phinney Special Summoned Cir from his hand. He attacked directly with his fiends, then Xyz Summoned Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. He used that to Xyz Summon Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal, discarding Scarm. He Set Vanity’s Emptiness, and searched for Farfa with Scarm.

Nagel banished Silent Boots from his Graveyard to get Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade. He Special Summoned Terrortop, searched for Taketomborg, and Phinney flipped Vanity’s Emptiness! Nagel Set two to his back row and passed. Phinney detached Dante from Beatrice, to send Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard. Calcab bounced away one of Nagel’s Set cards, and Dante’s effect put Graff in his hand.

Phinney drew Allure of Darkness for his turn. He played it to draw Anti-Spell Fragrance and Solemn Warning, and banished Graff. He detached Cir from Beatrice, and Beatrice was negated by Fog Blade. Cir’s effect revived Dante, and it destroyed Nagel’s Terrortop in battle. In Main Phase 2, Phinney played another Beatrice over Dante. He Set Warning and Anti-Spell Fragrance.

Jake Phinney

Phinney flipped Anti-Spell Fragrance in Nagel’s Draw Phase. Nagel Set two back row cards. Phinney detached Dante from Beatrice to send Cir to the Graveyard. Cir and Dante activated, putting Dante on the field and Cir back in the hand.

Phinney drew Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He used Dante for a third Beatrice, sending Rubic to the Graveyard. He moved to the Battle Phase with two Beatrice in Attack Position. One of them was blocked by Fog Blade, but the other struck directly. Phinney Normal Summoned Cir, which destroyed itself. It revived Scarm, which also destroyed itself. In the End Phase, Scarm’s effect searched out Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. Nagel looked at his next draw, and knew it was all over! He had no way to get past the three Beatrice with Anti-Spell Fragrance on the field!

Duel 2

Nagel chose to play second this time. Phinney began with 2 Terrortop, 2 Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries, and Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He Special Summoned Terrortop, getting Taketomborg, and Special Summoned that as well. He Special Summoned that as well, and Nagel used his own Ghost Reaper to nail every one of Phinney’s Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss! Phinney had to play Super Quantal Mech Beast Grampulse in Defense Position.

Nagel Special Summoned Farfa and Normal Summoned Barbar, to play Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. It detached Farfa to send another Farfa, Scarm, and Effect Veiler from the Deck to the Graveyard. Farfa temporarily banished Grampulse, and Dante attacked directly. It switched to Defense Position after the Battle Phase, and Nagel Set one to his back row. Nagel hadn’t even finished searching for Scarm, and Phinney already decided to concede! He knew he wouldn’t be able to fight back after losing all of his copies of Dante, especially with the hand he had.

Nagel evened up score! It’ll all come down to this final Duel.

Duel 3

Phinney chose to play first. He had Tour Guide From the Underworld, Solemn Warning, Fog Blade, Scarm, and Calcab. He played Tour Guide, bringing Graff to the field. He Xyz Summoned Dante in Defense Position. He detached Tour Guide, sending Maxx “C” and two copies of Twin Twisters to the Graveyard. He discarded Scarm to Xyz Summon Beatrice with Dante. He Set Warning and Fog Blade, and Scarm’s effect searched out Farfa.

Nagel played Twin Twisters, discarding Cir to wipe out Phinney’s back row! He Special Summoned Terrortop, searched for Taketomborg, and Special Summoned it. He Xyz Summoned Dante, and Phinney responded with Beatrice’s effect. Phinney detached his Dante to send Farfa to the Graveyard. Farfa temporarily banished Nagel’s Dante, and Phinney’s Dante put Scarm in his hand. Nagel continued, by Normal and Special Summoning two copies of The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots. He Xyz Summoned another Dante, detaching Silent Boots to send Solemn Warning, Solemn Strike, and Farfa to the Graveyard. Farfa banished Phinney’s Beatrice, and its Graff Xyz Material brought Cir to the field in Defense Position. Nagel banished Silent Boots from the Graveyard to add Fog Blade to his hand. He Set two back row cards. In the End Phase, Nagel got back his other Dante, and Phinney got his Beatrice back. That caused Phinney’s Cir to self-destruct, and it revived Dante.

Jonny Nagel

Phinney drew The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak. He discarded Farfa and stacked a new Beatrice over his Dante. Farfa banished Nagel’s Dante. Phinney Set Ancient Cloak.

Nagel simply passed. Phinney detached Dante from Beatrice, and sent The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves to the Graveyard. Dante’s effect put Cir in Phinney’s hand.

Phinney drew Terrortop. He Flip Summoned Ancient Cloak, and banished Fog Blade from his Graveyard to Special Summon Ragged Gloves. He Xyz Summoned Super Quantal Mech Beast Grampulse in Defense Position. It tried to destroy a back row card, and Nagel Chained the target: Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade, to negate Grampulse. At that moment, the round ended! After this turn, there would be five turns to decide the Match – neither player had taken any damage yet. Phinney Normal Summoned Terrortop, searching for Taketomborg. He Special Summoned it, and Xyz Summoned Number 47: Nightmare Shark! It used its effect and attacked directly, but was hit by Drowning Mirror Force! Phinney used Ragged Gloves in the Graveyard, sending Silent Boots to the Graveyard. He used that next, adding Fog Blade to his hand. He Set it.

Nagel Set a back row card.

Phinney drew Rubic. He Normal Summoned Cir, which self-destructed, and it revived Dante in Defense Position. Next, he used the effect of his Grampulse (Even though it was negated by Fog Blade), just so he could detach Ancient Cloak. He used Cloak’s effect to add Silent Boots to his hand. He discarded Scarm and used Dante to Xyz Summon Beatrice. Scarm’s effect put Cir in his hand.

Nagel Set another back row card. Phinney detached Dante from Beatrice, sending Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard! Dante put Cir in his hand, and Barbar threw out 900 damage! That was the first damage dealt in this entire Duel, but it may be the only damage Phinney needs!

Phinney drew Vanity’s Fiend. He Normal Summoned Cir, which self-destructed, and it revived Barbar! Barbar self-destructed, and it dealt another 900 damage! Phinney passed.

Twin Twisters! Twin Twisters! Twin Twisters!” Nagel began chanting. He just needed to clear away the card he knew to be Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade, and he’d be able to go for Nightmare Shark to end the Duel.

Nagel drew his card, and his demeanor showed he had not, in fact, drawn Twin Twisters. He looked over all of his options, and decided to combine his Dantes for Number F0: Utopic Future. He banishd Silent Boots from his Graveyard, searching out Fog Blade. After a moment, he decided to concede, unable to overcome the Life Points difference!
