Round 1 Feature Match: Bohdan Temnyk vs. Robert Dreni

August 27th, 2016

Bohdan Temnyk competed last weekend in the World Champion to represent his native Australia, but why stop there?!  After competing here at YCS Toronto last year, he’s back fresh off his Worlds appearance and looking for more title gold.  His Deck of choice?  The same Burning Abyss Phantom Knight strategy that won him the Oceanic World Championship Qualifier this year.

His opponent is Toronto local Robert Dreni, competing this weekend with a strategy that may catch Temnyk off guard: Mermails.  We saw Mermails make the Top Cut at the South American WCQ earlier this summer, and Dreni is playing some new tech from recent releases.  The Great White North faces off against the Land Down Under, right here in our first Feature Match of the weekend.

Dreni chose to let Temnyk open the Match, and the Worlds competitor started off his day with a hand of Solemn Strike; Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; Allure of Darkness; and Twin Twisters.  He Special Summoned Farfa, then Cir, and overlaid both monsters to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. He sent the Farfa to his Graveyard to activate Dante’s effect and then sent another Solemn Strike, Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, and Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to his Graveyard with Dante’s effect.  He Set Twin Twisters and Solemn Strike, and searched for Tour Guide from the Underworld with Scarm’s effect in the End Phase.

Dreni pitched Atlantean Dragoons to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus!  He searched his Deck for Mermail Abyssmegalo and Mermail Abysspike, then revealed Abyssmegalo pitching another Dragoons and Atlantean Marksman to Special Summon it.  “That’s pretty good,” remarked Temnyk, flipping Solemn Strike to negate the Special Summon.  That left Dreni to search Deep Sea Diva with his second Dragoons’s effect, destroying Temnyk’s Twin Twisters with his Marksman.

Dreni Normal Summoned Deep Sea Diva, Special Summoned Neptabyss, the Atlantean Prince from his Deck, and used its ability to send Atlantean Heavy Infantry from his Deck to his Graveyard, searching another to his hand.  That destroyed Temnyk’s Dante, and Temnyk used his Cir to revive it, getting the Cir back with Dante’s effect.  Dreni Tuned Deep Sea Diva to Neptabyss to Synchro Summon Tatsunoko, and he Tuned it with Mermail Abyssgunde from his hand to Synchro Summon Coral Dragon.  Dreni had three cards left in hand.  Temnyk had three cards in hand with Dante on the field.

Dreni used Coral Dragon’s effect, pitching Atlantean Heavy Infantry to destroy Dante, giving Temnyk back his Scarm with Dante’s effect.  Dreni attacked with both of his monsters to drop Temnyk down to 2400 Life Points.

Temnyk drew Solemn Warning.  He Normal Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld to Special Summon Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck, then Xyz Summoned another Dante with them.  He detached Tour Guide to send Reinforcement of the Army, The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak, and Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard, then banished Ancient Cloak to search The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves.

He activated Allure of Darkness to draw two copies of The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots and banished one of them to finish Allure’s effect.  He pitched Cir to upgrade Dante into Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal, reviving his first Dante, and then tossed Scarm to turn that into a Beatrice at well.

“No wonder that card’s going to one,” laughed Dreni.  Temnyk laughed his agreement, attacking over both of Dreni’s monsters to clear Dreni’s field and feed him a draw with Coral Dragon.  Temnyk Set Solemn Warning and searched for Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss with Scarm’s effect to end his turn.

Dreni drew to four cards, trying to figure out how to deal with two copies of Beatrice plus an unknown backrow (the Solemn Warning).  He tapped his fingers on the table playing out possible moves and didn’t look terribly confident as he did.  “Let’s go to Game 2,” he announced, not wanting to waste any time when he was down a Duel.

Robert Dreni comes out big with double Atlantean Dragoons and some new hotness in the form of Coral Dragon, but Australia’s finest battles back to assemble a nigh-unbreakable field and capture the first Duel of the day!  Another victory like that, and Temnyk would be 1-0 to start Day 1.

Temnyk was going first again, this time with The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots; Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak; Tour Guide from the Underworld; and Pot of Desires!  He Normal Summoned Ancient Cloak, and Dreni responded by activating the effect of Maxx “C” from his hand.  Temnyk banished ten cards face-down from his Deck and drew Reinforcement of the Army and Allure of Darkness with Pot of Desires.  Reinforcement got him The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves, and he drew Speedroid Terrortop and Solemn Strike with Allure of Darkness, banishing the Gloves.  He Set Strike, turned Ancient Cloak to Defense Position with its effect, and ended.

Dreni Normal Summoned Neptabyss, the Atlantean Prince and used its effect to send Atlantean Dragoons to the Graveyard, searching his Deck for another Dragoons and Mermail Abyssmegalo to add to his hand.  He revealed it, pitching Dragoons and Atlantean Heavy Infantry in a bid to Special Summon it, and Temnyk made the obvious call of shutting it down with Solemn Strike so Heavy Infantry was forced to destroy Ancient Cloak.  Dreni followed up with another Abyssmegalo!  He tossed Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju and Mermail Abysspike to Special Summon Abyssmegalo #2, searching Abyss-scale of the Mizuchi, and activated it on Abyssmegalo, then fed Neptabyss to it to make Abyssmegalo a double attacker, reviving Atlantean Dragoons in the process!  That was more than enough for game, and suddenly the Match score was even.

Temnyk chose to play second in the final Duel, and Dreni opened with one Set card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Temnyk had The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves; Maxx “C”; The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves; Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; and The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak.  He Summoned the Ancient Cloak as he did last Duel, then Summoned Silent Boots, and Dreni hit him with Flying “C”.  He attacked with Ancient Cloak and Dreni flipped Abyss-sphere; Temnyk fired back with Maxx “C” and drew a card when Dreni Special Summoned Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck.

In Main Phase 2, Temnyk shifted Ancient Cloak to Defense Position.  Abysslinde was destroyed in the End Phase, getting Dreni Mermail Abysspike and giving Temnyk another draw.  Dreni pitched Atlantean Heavy Infantry with Abysspike’s effect to search Atlantean Marksman from his Deck.

Dreni drew, then revealed Mermail Abyssteus.  He sent his Atlantean Heavy Infantry to the Graveyard to Special Summon Abyssteus, destroying Silent Boots and searching Mermail Abyssturge.  He Normal Summoned it, activated its effect pitching Atlantean Marksman, getting back his Heavy Infantry.  He overlaid Abyssturge and Abysspike to Xyz Summon Abyss Dweller, detached Abysspike for its effect, then Special Summoned Elder Entity Norden with Instant Fusion to bring Abysspike back!  Wasting Abysspike’s effect like that might prove to be overly ambitious.  Dreni pressed on, overlaying Abysspike with Norden to Xyz Summon Number 37: Hope Woven Dragon Spider Shark, then attacked to destroy Ancient Cloak with Abyssteus, leaving Flying “C” on the field to finish out.

Temnyk drew Maxx “C” and banished The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots; Dreni Chained Abyss Dweller’s effect as Temnyk got Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade.  Temnyk turned Flying “C” to attack mode, rammed it into Abyss Dweller to get it off the field, and Special Summoned Speedroid Terrortop to search Speedroid Taketomborg.  He had a whopping seven cards in hand.  Temnyk Special Summoned Taketomborg to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss, then searched another Silent Boots with Reinforcement of the Army.  Temnyk Summoned Ragged Gloves and Silent Boots, overlaid for another Dante, and gave up Scarm and Libic to upgrade them into a pair of Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal.  He Set Fog Blade.  “Your turn.”

Dreni drew to two cards, controlling Mermail Abyssteus, Abyss Dweller with no Xyz Materials, and Number 37: Hope Woven Dragon Spider Shark.  He passed his turn and Temnyk went to work: he detached The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots to send Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck to his Graveyard, banishing Spider Shark temporarily to get rid of its Xyz Materials.  He detached Dante from the other Beatrice, loading Scarm to his Graveyard; he got back his Farfa to his hand and searched his Deck for Tour Guide from the Underworld with Scarm.  This one looked like a sealed deal.

Temnyk drew Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Normal Summoned the Tour Guide, Special Summoning Cir.  He detached Dante to send Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade to the Graveyard, getting back his Scarm with Dante’s effect, and overlaid for Number 20: Giga-Brilliant.  He upgraded it into Digital Bug Corebage, revived Dante from his Graveyard with Cir, and cleared Mermail Abyssteus with Corebage’s ability.

Temnyk banished Abyss Dweller with Farfa’s effect in the process of Summoning his third Beatrice, attacked with a Beatrice into Spider Shark to Special Summon Dante, Pilgrim of the Burning Abyss, then sent it to attack over the Spider Shark.  Dreni Special Summoned back his Elder Entity Norden which revived Mermail Abysslinde.  He was still hanging in there, but Temnyk banished both monsters by attacking to destroy Norden.

Temnyk made direct attacks with his last Beatrice and Corebage, then revived his Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves for another direct attack to drop Dreni to 100 Life Points.  His final Beatrice’s effect sent Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard, finishing the Match with damage from its effect!

Robert Dreni takes the second Duel, but Bohdan Temnyk reigns victorious with Burning Abyss Phantom Knights to capture Duels 1 and 3, scoring his first win of the weekend!
