Round 10 Feature Match: Yuhang Li vs. David Creti

August 28th, 2016

Yuhang Li is a Toronto all-star, with three Top 8 showings in Regional Qualifiers the past year and three YCS tops over the course of his Dueling career.  His opponent is David Creti, who has also had a strong year: the Montreal Duelist topped his last two Regional Qualifiers alone, and is 8-1 so far with Blue-Eyes White Dragon; the highest-ranked Blue-Eyes player in the tournament, paired up against the 9-0 Li.  This match will pit the upstart Blue-Eyes Deck against the eminently established Domain Monarchs.

Both of these competitors were shoe-ins for the Top 32, but Li wanted to go 10-0, while Creti wanted to secure a strong record with Blue-Eyes White Dragon.  We haven’t seen much of the Deck in Feature Matches this weekend, so this is a big chance to see how it operates against one of the best Decks of the format, piloted by the only undefeated competitor in the tournament.

Both players received a random Deck check this round, and after much investigation, it was found that Li had unintentionally marked cards due to wear from Day 1 play, warranting a game loss penalty.  With one loss in the Match so far, Li chose to play first in Game 2.  He opened with one Set card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Creti had Twin Twisters; Effect Veiler; Return of the Dragon Lords; Dragon Shrine; The Melody of Awakening Dragon; and Blue-Eyes White Dragon.  He pitched Blue-Eyes for Melody, searching his deck for another Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon.  He activated Dragon Shrine to send Dragon Spirit of White and The White Stone of Ancients to his Graveyard, Special Summoned Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon, then targeted Dragon Spirit of White with Return of the Dragon Lords.  He activated its effect to destroy Li’s Set Twin Twisters, then attacked with both monsters to knock Li down to 2500 Life Points.

Creti overlaid for Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy in Main Phase 2 and Set Twin Twisters.  In his End Phase, he used The White Stone of Ancients to Special Summon another Blue-Eyes White Dragon.  Li would need to do something big to kick out of this one and keep his 10-0 dreams alive.

Li activated Domain of the True Monarchs, then activated Raigeki.  When Creti banished his Return of the Dragon Lords to protect his Dragons Li conceded immediately.

“I was hoping you’d forget about that,” Li explained.

But Creti did not.

A game loss penalty followed by what appeared to be a subpar hand shatters Yuhang Li’s dreams of a 10-0 finish in the Swiss Rounds, as David Creti steamrolls on through with Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy!  Both Duelists move on to the Top 32 with 9-1 records, and Blue-Eyes White Dragon is headed to the playoffs.
