UDS Invitational Chicago: Round 8 Feature Match: Jonathon Nagel vs. Jeff Jones
It’s the final round of Day 1, here at the Summer 2016 UDS Invitational! This round pits two veteran Duelists against each other! We’ve got Jonathon Nagel packing a Speedroid Phantom Knight Deck, up against Jeff Jones wielding the power of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon!
Duel 1
Jones won the die roll and chose to play first. Right away, he banished ten of his cards for Pot of Desires! He activated Brilliant Fusion, sending Gem-Knight Lazuli and Master with Eyes of Blue to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon Gem-Knight Seraphinite in Defense Position. He used Trade-In next, discarding Dragon Spirit of White, then another Trade-In discarded Blue-Eyes White Dragon. He played The White Stone of Ancients using his additional Normal Summon. Next, he used Master with Eyes of Blue to send Seraphinite to the Graveyard and Special Summon Blue-Eyes White Dragon! He tuned White Stone to Blue-Eyes for Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon in Defense Position, then used White Stone to Special Summon Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Deck in the End Phase.
Nagel began with The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak, Card Trooper, Speedroid Terrortop, Phantom Knights’ Wing, The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots, and Solemn Strike. He Special Summoned Terrortop, and it put Speedroid Taketomborg in his hand. He Special Summoned it, and Xyz Summoned The Phantom Knights of Break Sword. He Set Phantom Knights’ Wing, then used Break Sword’s effect on Wing and Spirit Dragon. Jones responded with Spirit Dragon’s effect, Tributing it to bring out Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon! Azure-Eyes effect activated to protect his monsters. Nagel Normal Summoned Ancient Cloak, and Jones flipped Phoenix Wing Wind Blast! He discarded Dragon Spirit of White, sending Ancient Cloak to the top of the Deck. Nagel Set Solemn Strike to finish his turn.
In the Standby Phase, Azure-Eyes activated, and was negated by Solemn Strike. It couldn’t be destroyed, however, thanks to its effect last turn. Jones played Sage with Eyes of Blue, and searched out Master with Eyes of Blue. In the Battle Phase, Blue-Eyes attacked to destroy Break Sword. Azure-Eyes and Sage attacked directly. In Main Phase 2, Jones Synchro Summoned Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon, then used The White Stone of Ancients to add Blue-Eyes to his hand. He Set one to finish.
When Nagel saw his next card, he immediately conceded!
Duel 2
Nagel chose to play first this time. He started with Solemn Strike, Reinforcement of the Army, The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak, Speedroid Taketomborg, and Grave of the Super Ancient Organism. He played Reinforcement of the Army to get The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots. He played Ancient Cloak, Special Summoned Silent Boots, and Xyz Summoned Dante. Dante detached Silent Boots to send 2 Terrortops and a Card Trooper to the Graveyard. He banished Silent Boots from the Graveyard to add Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade to his hand. He Set Fog Blade, Solemn Strike, and Grave of the Super Ancient Organism.
Jones started the same way as he did last time: Pot of Desires! He Normal Summoned Sage with Eyes of Blue, and lost it to Solemn Strike. Jones played Swords of Concealing Light, turning Dante face-down. He Set one to his back row.
Nagel drew another Grave of the Super Ancient Organism. He Set it.
Jones discarded Dragon Spirit of White with Trade-In. He played Sage with Eyes of Blue, and its effect put Master with Eyes of Blue in his hand. Next, he revealed a Blue-Eyes White Dragon in his hand to Special Summon Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon in Defense Position! Nagel flipped up Grave of the Super Ancient Organism when the dragon hit the field. Jones tuned Sage to his Blue-Eyes for Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon in Defense Position.
Nagel drew Speed Recovery. He played it, bringing Terrortop to the field. Its effect let him search out Speedroid Tri-Eyed Dice. He Normal Summoned it, and Special Summoned Taketomborg. He used Taketomborg and Tri-Eyed Dice to Xyz Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon. Leviair detached Tri-Eyed Dice to bring Silent Boots to the field. He used Boots and Terrortop to Xyz Summon The Phantom Knights of Break Sword, and Jones flipped Typhoon. He targeted Grave of the Super Ancient Organism, but Nagel responded to Typhoon by flipping his second Grave of the Super Ancient Organism! That left Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon still locked down, unable to use its effect. Nagel had Break Sword destroy his own Dante and Jones’ Spirit Dragon. Dante had nothing to target. The Silent Boots that was attached to Dante, however, now was banished to add Fog Blade to Nagel’s hand. He Set it.
Jones Normal Summoned Master with Eyes of Blue. He used its effect to get Sage back to his hand. Jones used Sage’s effect from the hand, sending Master to the Graveyard – Jones took a moment to read Grave of the Super Ancient Organism again, and realized he wouldn’t be able to do anything. He conceded, moving to the third Duel!
Duel 3
Jones decided to play first for the final Duel. He Set one face-down card to each zone.
Nagel had a hand of The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots, Speed Recovery, Card Trooper, Grave of the Super Ancient Organism, Speedroid Tri-Eyed Dice, and Reinforcement of the Army. He played Reinforcement, and grabbed The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak. He Normal Summoned Ancient Cloak and Special Summoned Silent Boots, so he could Xyz Summon The Phantom Knights of Break Sword. It destroyed itself and Jones’s Set Typhoon. Break Sword’s effect brought Boots and Cloak back to the field, now as Level 4 monsters. Nagel used them to Xyz Summon Steelswarm Roach, and it destroyed The White Stone of Ancients in battle. Nagel Set Grave of the Super Ancient Organism. In the End Phase, Jones used The White Stone of Ancients to Special Summon Dragon Spirit of White, and it banished the Set Grave of the Super Ancient Organism!
Jones used Trade-In, discarding Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Dragon Spirit of White destroyed Steelswarm Roach in battle, then Jones played Sage with Eyes of Blue in Main Phase 2. Sage’s effect searched out Master with Eyes of Blue. Next, Jones used The Melody of Awakening Dragon, discarding Blue-Eyes White Dragon to add Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon to his hand. Jones tuned Sage to Dragon Spirit of White for Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon in Defense Position.
Nagel drew Speedroid Terrortop. He Special Summoned it, adding Speedroid Taketomborg to his hand. He Special Summoned it, then Normal Summoned Speedroid Tri-Eyed Dice. He tuned all of his Speedroids together for Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! Trishula’s effect banished The White Stone of Ancients from the Graveyard, Spirit Dragon from the field, and a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from Jones’ hand. Nagel used Silent Boots from his Graveyard, adding a Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade to his hand. He Set it.
Jones Normal Summoned Master with Eyes of Blue, Nagel flipped Fog Blade on it, and Jones played Twin Twisters from his hand! He discarded a second Twin Twisters to play the first. Master returned Sage to the hand, and Sage’s effect Special Summoned Dragon Spirit of White from the Deck. Next, Master’s effect in the Graveyard sent Dragon Spirit of White to the Graveyard to bring out Blue-Eyes White Dragon! It attacked, but was blocked by the effect of Speedroid Tri-Eyed Dice. Nagel used Fog Blade in the Graveyard to bring back Ancient Cloak.
Nagel drew Ally of Justice Cycle Reader. He Special Summoned Terrortop, adding a Tri-Eyed Dice to his hand. He Normal Summoned Card Trooper and sent Tri-Eyed Dice, Terrortop, and a Cycle Reader to the Graveyard. He stacked Ancient Cloak and Terrortop for Leviair, and detached Ancient Cloak for Leviair to Special Summon the banished Tri-Eyed Dice. He stacked his Tri-Eyed Dice and Card Trooper for another Leviair. That one detached to bring out the banished Ancient Cloak. He stacked his two Leviair for Number F0: Utopic Future, and it was all over a moment later!
Jonathon Nagel is the victor, with his Speedroid Phantom Knight Deck!
