Top 4 Feature Match: Dakota Angeloff vs. Joel White
We’re down to 4 Duelists at YCS Minneapolis! We featured Joel White in the Top 16 with his Metalfoes Deck, and he’s still in the tournament now facing Dakota Angeloff and his Phantom Knight Burning Abyss Deck. One of these Duelists is going to the Finals, and will receive a guaranteed Super Rare version of the YCS prize card, Number 93: Utopia Kaiser. Who will move on to the Finals? We’re about to find out. It’s time to Duel!
Duel One
White won the roll and elected to go first.
White started off with a Normal Summoned Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku and activated its effect to add Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin to his hand. He then activated Metalfoes Volflame in the Pendulum Zone, using its effect to destroy Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku and Setting Metalfoes Counter from the Deck. He then activated Luster Pendulum, the Dracoslayer and used its effect to destroy Volflame to add another one to hand. He then activated that copy and Pendulum Summoned Metalfoes Volflame from the Extra Deck and Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin from the hand. He set Metalfoes Combination and passed.
Angeloff had a hand of Foolish Burial, 2 copies of Pot of Desires, The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves, Speedroid Terrortop, and Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He Special Summoned Speedroid Terrortop, using its effect to add Speedroid Taketomborg to his hand. He then activated one of his Pot of Desires, banishing the top 10 cards of his Deck to draw Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Twin Twisters. He Special Summoned Speedroid Taketomborg and used the 2 monsters to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss! White used Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin’s effect to bounce Metalfoes Volflame and the Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss before its effect could be used. Foolish Burial came down next, sending Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard. Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss’s effect activated, bouncing the face-down Metalfoes Counter. Twin Twisters came down next, discarding Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to destroy the Pendulum Scales. Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss’s effect Special Summoned Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the Graveyard. Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss was then Special Summoned and the 2 Burning Abyss monsters were combined for Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. Angeloff activated Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss’s effect, sending 3 cards to the Graveyard. Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss attacked Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin. In Main Phase 2, The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots was banished to add a Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade from the Deck to his hand. He set it and passed.
White activated Archfiend Eccentric, using its effect to destroy itself and the face-down Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade. He then activated Metalfoes Combination, activated Metalfoes Volflame, used its effect to destroy Metalfoes Combination, and Set Metalfoes Fusion from the Deck. Metalfoes Combination searched out Metalfoes Goldriver which was activated and completed the 1 to 8 scale for a 5 monster Pendulum Summon!
Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin bounced Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku and Angeloff’s Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss activated to banish a Metalfoes Volflame. Jowgen the Spiritualist was then Normal Summoned and all of the monsters attacked directly. In Main Phase 2, White set a card. In the End Phase, Metalfoes Volflame returned to the field.
Angeloff was at 1550 LP and drew Alich, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss for turn. He activated the second Pot of Desires, banishing another 10 cards to draw 2 cards that could not break White’s field. He conceded the first game.
Duel Two
Angeloff elected to go first in Duel 2. He started with a hand of The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots, Maxx “C”, Tour Guide, and 2 copies of Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and used its effect to Special Summon Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the Deck. The two monsters were used to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss whose effect sent Twin Twisters, Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, and Speedroid Terrortop to the Graveyard. Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss Special Summoned a Scarm from hand and Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss’s effect Special Summoned Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the Deck. Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss were used to Xyz Summon another Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss! This Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss’s effect sent Book of Eclipse, Anti-Spell Fragrance, and Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard. Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss was discarded to Xyz Summon Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal! In the End Phase, Angeloff used Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss’s effect to add Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from Deck to hand.
White drew and activated Pot of Desires, banishing the top 10 cards of his Deck to draw 2 cards. He then Special Summoned Blackwing – Gofu the Vague Shadow and activated the effect to Special Summon 2 Vague Shadow Tokens, but Angeloff chained Maxx “C” to get a draw from it and put White in a rough spot. White TributedBlackwing – Gofu the Vague Shadow for Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin. He then activated Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin’s effect, targeting itself and Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal whose effect was Chained sending The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak to the Graveyard. Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss’s effect added Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss back to Angeloff’s hand. White Set 3 and passed.
Angeloff drew Anti-Spell Fragrance for turn. He activated The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak in his Graveyard, banishing it to add The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves from his Deck to his hand. He then activated Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss, detaching Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and sending Speedroid Terrortop, Pot of Desires and Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade to the Graveyard. Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss’s effect Special Summoned Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the Graveyard. Angeloff then Special Summoned Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and used the 2 monsters to Xyz Summon Number 20: Giga-Brilliant. At this point, White Special Summoned Flying “C” to Angeloff’s field preventing any additional Xyz Summons while Flying “C” was under Angeloff’s control. He activated Number 20’s effect, detaching Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to boost all of his monsters by 300 ATK. Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss activated targeting Flying “C” but White negated Farfa’s effect with Solemn Strike. Angeloff Normal Summoned The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves, then Special Summoned The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots. He then attacked with all of those monsters, destroying the 2 Vague Shadow Tokens and reducing White to 1600 LP. He set the Anti-Spell Fragrance and passed.
White drew for turn and Angeloff activated Anti-Spell Fragrance; but White flipped his face-down Typhoon to destroy Anti-Spell Fragrance! White continued by activating Metalfoes Silverd and Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin, using Metalfoes Silverd’s effect to destroy Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin and Set Metalfoes Counter from the Deck. He then Pendulum Summoned Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin in Defense from the Extra Deck. After the Pendulum Summon, Angeloff flipped up Twin Twisters targeting the 2 face-down cards: Metalfoes Counter and Solemn Warning. White ended with only Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin as a temporary defense.
On Angeloff’s turn, he switched all his monsters to Attack Position and it was enough damage to force a third Duel!
Duel 3
White elected to go first in the final Duel. He started off with Metalfoes Silverd and Archfiend Eccentric in the Pendulum Zones. He used Metalfoes Silverd to destroy Archfiend Eccentric and Set Metalfoes Counter. He then activated Metalfoes Steelen and Pendulum Summoned Archfiend Eccentric from the Extra Deck and Jowgen the Spiritualist from the hand! He Set another card and passed.
Angeloff started with Twin Twisters, Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade, Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, and 2 copies of Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He Normal Summoned Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and used it to destroy Jowgen the Spiritualist by battle. Metalfoes Counter was activated, Special Summoning Metalfoes Silverd from the Deck. Twin Twisters came down next, destroying both Pendulum Scales. In Main Phase 2, Angeloff Special Summoned Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss but White gave him a Flying “C”! Both Burning Abyss monsters were destroyed as a result. Angeloff Set Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade and passed.
White used Metalfoes Silverd and Eccentric to Xyz Summon Super Quantal Mech Beast Grampulse! Its effect was activated, detaching Metalfoes Silverd to try and destroy Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade, but it was Chained negating Super Quantal Mech Beast Grampulse’s effect. Metalfoes Counter was then banished from the Graveyard to add Metalfoes Silverd back from the Extra Deck to the hand. Metalfoes Silverd’s Pendulum Effect destroyed Metalfoes Steelen, Setting Metalfoes Counter from the Deck.
Angeloff drew Twin Twisters for turn. He Normal Summoned Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss which was immediately destroyed because he also controlled Flying “C”. He set Twin Twisters and searched for Tour Guide From the Underworld in the End Phase with Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss’s effect.
White Normal Summoned Guiding Ariadne and attempted to use Steelen’s effect to destroy Ariadne; but Angeloff chained Twin Twisters discarding Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and destroying both of White’s Pendulum Scales preventing Ariadne’s destruction. In the End Phase, Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss’s effect added a Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck to his hand.
Angeloff drew Speedroid Terrortop for turn. He turned Flying “C” to Attack Position and rammed it into the Attack Position Ariadne, finally clearing the insect from the field. In Main Phase 2, Angeloff Special Summoned Speedroid Terrortop, using its effect to search for Speedroid Taketomborg, which was Special Summoned and both monsters used to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss! Its effect sent 3 cards to the Graveyard: Pot of Desires, The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots and another card. Next, Tour Guide From the Underworld came down, Special Summoning another Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the field, and those monsters were combined to Xyz Summon The Phantom Knights of Break Sword! Its effect was used to destroy his own Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade and the Super Quantal Mech Beast Grampulse. Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss was discarded to Xyz Summon Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal! In the End Phase, another Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss was added to Angeloff’s hand.
White activated Metalfoes Steelen and then Metalfoes Combination. Metalfoes Steelen’s effect destroyed Metalfoes Combination and Set Metalfoes Fusion. Metalfoes Combination’s effect added Metalfoes Goldriver from the Deck to the hand. Metalfoes Goldriver was activated in the Pendulum Zone and 3 monsters were Pendulum Summoned. Next, Metalfoes Fusion was activated, fusing 2 monsters to Fusion Summon Metalfoes Orichalc! Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal was activated, sending Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard to banish the Orichalc. He then Normal Summoned Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku and used its effect to add Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin from his Deck to his hand. Metalfoes Goldriver was used to destroy Ariadne, revealing 3 Solemn Strikes, one of which was added to his hand. A Spell/Trap was Set and then Metalfoes Volflame attacked over The Phantom Knights of Break Sword. At this point, time was called. In the End Phase, Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade was banished to Special Summon The Phantom Knights of Break Sword and Orichalc was returned to the field.
On White’s turn, he used Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal’s effect to send Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade to the Graveyard which was immediately banished to Special Summon The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots. Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss was Normal Summoned and immediately destroyed. Its effect activated, Special Summoning Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss which was also destroyed, Special Summoning Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss which was also destroyed, Special Summoning Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the hand. Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots were used to Xyz Summon another The Phantom Knights of Break Sword but White flipped Solemn Strike to negate the Summon! Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss’s effect was used to banish Orichalc until the End Phase. Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal was switched to Attack Position and it attacked Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku. The Phantom Knights of Break Sword was switched to Defense Position and he passed.
In turn 2 of overtime, White activated Pot of Desires! He banished the top 10 cards of his Deck to draw 2 cards. He activated Metalfoes Fusion, using the on-field Orichalc and Metalfoes Volflame to Summon another Orichalc! The sent Orichalc destroyed the face-down Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade and Metalfoes Fusion’s effect was used to return it to the Deck and draw a card. White then Pendulum Summoned 4 monsters in total! Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin was used to target his own Metalfoes Volflame and Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal to bounce both. He then attacked with Orichalc into the Defense Position The Phantom Knights of Break Sword, inflicting double piercing damage! The Phantom Knights of Break Sword was banished because it was Special Summoned by Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade’s effect. The rest of the monsters were enough to end it!
