North America WCQ – Round 5 Feature Match: Billy Brake vs. Alfie Danklefsen

July 9th, 2017

For this Feature Match, we’re spotlighting Billy Brake! This Dallas Duelist has had a great year in Yu-Gi-Oh!, with multiple YCS wins and top cuts. He’s currently in second place in World Qualifying Points, so he’s got a fantastic chance at going to the World Championship. He’s using a True Draco Deck today, and he’s against another True Draco Deck piloted by Alfie Danklefsen, from St. Louis! We’ve seen Danklefsen several times in major events recently, such as when he took second place at the last UDS Championship.

Duel 1

After tying three times, Billy won the roll and chose to play first. He began with Upstart Goblin, Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter, Dragonic Diagram, True Draco Heritage, True Draco Apocalypse. He played Upstart Goblin to draw Forbidden Chalice. He played Diagram, destroying his Apocalypse to get Master Peace, the True Dracoslayer in his hand. He played Heritage and drew True King’s Return. He Tributed Heritage for Dino Knight, then Set True King’s Return and Forbidden Chalice.

Danklefsen played Pot of Desires, and Dinomight Knight put True Draco Apocalypse face-up on the field. Danklefsen continued with Terraforming to add his own Dragonic Diagram to his hand. Pot of Duality came next, revealing Master Peace, Disciples of the True Dracophoenix, and Majesty Maiden, the True Dracocaster. He put Master Peace in his hand. He put down Diagram and destroyed Maxx “C” in his hand, adding True Draco Apocalypse to his hand. He Set one to his back row, and activated True Draco Heritage. He Tributed Heritage and the Set Apocalypse to play Master Peace, and used the Tributed cards’ effects to destroy Brake’s Dinomight and Diagram. Brake Chained Apocalypse’s effect, Danklefsen Chained Master Peace to destroy Apocalypse, and Brake Chained True King’s Return to Special Summon Master Peace to the field. Danklefsen Set two to his back row and played Card of Demise! He Tributed his Master Peace for Ignis Heat, the True Dracowarrior, then used Raigeki to destroy Brake’s Master Peace! At the End Phase, he had to discard his Majesty Maiden.

Brake drew Galaxy Cyclone and Set it.

Danklefsen flipped Pot of Duality, revealing Card of Demise, True King’s Return, and Disciples of the True Dracophoenix. He added Card of Demise to his hand. He Tributed Ignis Heat for Dinomight Knight, and attacked directly for the first damage in this Duel. In Main Phase 2, he used Card of Demise to draw three cards. He played Disciples of the True Dracophoenix, and tried to use it to recycle some cards and draw one. Brake Chained True King’s Return to Special Summon Master Peace, to which Danklefsen Chained with Dinomight’s effect, and Brake Chained Galaxy Cyclone to banish Disciples before it could resolve! Dinomight’s effect put True King’s Return on Danklefsen’s field. Then, he played a new Diagram over the old one, and used it to destroy Return and add a new Disciples to his hand. When Return was destroyed, its effect wiped out Brake’s Master Peace. Danklefsen flipped Waterfall of Dragon Souls to add Master Peace to his hand. He Tribute Summoned it, using Disciples and Apocalypse.

Brake drew Pot of Desires, and used it to draw Terraforming and Dinomight Knight. He used Return to bring Master Peace to the field. He Tributed Return to play Dinomight Knight. Return’s effect in the Graveyard activated, triggering Danklefsen’s Dinomight. That triggered Brake’s Dinomight. Both Duelists got a new copy of True King’s Return, and the old one destroyed Danklefsen’s Dinomight. Danklefsen Special Summoned Master Peace with Return.

Danklefsen sent his Master Peace, strengthened by Dragonic Diagram, to destroy Brake’s Dinomight Knight. In Main Phase 2, he used Pot of Duality to reveal Dinomight, Master Peace, and Waterfall of Dragon Souls. He took Waterfall and Set it. Brake used Return’s effect, Master Peace destroyed it, and Return destroyed Master Peace in kind.

Brake drew Heritage. He sent his Master Peace to destroy the other Master Peace in battle, but that one used its effect to destroy Brake’s. Brake played Heritage, and drew Zoodiac Ratpier! He Normal Summoned it and sent Zoodiac Thoroughblade to the Graveyard. Danklefsen then used Waterfall to add Master Peace to his hand, and used True King’s Return to Tribute Summon it! Return went to the Graveyard and destroyed Ratpier, cutting off Brake’s combo. Brake had nothing but Heritage, while Danklefsen just had Master Peace and Diagram.

Danklefsen used his Diagram to destroy Dinomight from his hand, adding Disciples to his hand instead. He played it, getting Return, Master Peace, and Dinomight back into his Deck to draw a new card. Master Peace attacked directly, leaving Brake with 350 Life Points. Danklefsen Set one card in his back row.

Brake drew Disciples, tried to use it, and lost it to Master Peace. Disciples wiped out Danklefsen’s Set The Monarchs Stormforth, and then Heritage let Brake draw Zoodiac Barrage! He played Barrage, and had it destroy Heritage to Special Summon Zoodiac Whiptail. Heritage’s effect destroyed Danklefsen’s Diagram. Whiptail was used to play Zoodiac Broadbull, and that became Zoodiac Chakanine. Chakanine Special Summoned Thoroughblade, then Chakanine became Zoodiac Drident. Its effect destroyed Danklefsen’s Disciples, which destroyed Brake’s Barrage.

Danklefsen’s Master Peace destroyed Thoroughblade.

Brake drew Terraforming. He used Drident to play Chakanine. When Master Peace’s effect destroyed it, Brake conceded!

Duel 2

Brake went first, with a hand of Terraforming, Upstart Goblin, Heritage, Ratpier, and Disciples. He played Ratpier and sent Zoodiac Ramram to the Graveyard. He used Ratpier for Zoodiac Boarbow, and used its effect to Special Summon another Ratpier. Danklefsen Chained Maxx “C”. Upstart Goblin gave Brake Pot of Desires, then Terraforming got Dragonic Diagram. Pot of Desires let him draw Master Peace and another Disciples. He activated Diagram, then Disciples. Diagram destroyed Disciples and put Mariamne, the True Dracophoenix in his hand. He played Heritage and used it to draw another Diagram. He played it, destroyed Mariamne, and added Heritage to his hand. Mariamne’s effect got Dinomight Knight as well. He Tributed Heritage for Dinomight. That let him use Disciples to put his True Draco cards back in the Deck, and he drew Cosmic Cyclone. He used Disciples and Ratpier next, to Tribute Summon Master Peace! He set Cosmic Cyclone.

Danklefsen began with Pot of Desires for two more cards. He played Diagram, using it to destroy his Disciples to get True King’s Return. The effect of Disciples destroyed Brake’s Set Cosmic Cyclone. Danklefsen Set True King’s Return, and Tributed it immediately to play Ignis Heat. Return’s effect wiped out Master Peace, then Raigeki took out the rest of Brake’s monsters! Heritage came next, followed by a new Diagram, then he Set his last card in his back row. He used Card of Demise, then drew three with Heritage! Diagram’s effect destroyed Dinomight to add Disciples to his hand, and he played it to draw again. Brake knew it was all over now that he had basically no cards while Danklefsen had a full hand and field – Brake conceded!
