Round 2 Feature Match: Ryan Yu vs. Cameron Chin
There are dozens of celebrated Duelists here at the Metro Toronto Convention Center, but when Bounty Duelists were announced this morning, no one got more applause than Canada’s 2017 Dragon Duel World Champion, Ryan Yu! Yu started his run at Worlds with a draw and a loss, but proceeded to win out every following Round, capturing the World Championship with Chain Burn. Today he’s playing Windwitch Invoked.
His opponent this round is Cameron Chin from Rochester, New York. Nineteen years old, he traveled here to compete in his second Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournament. He’s playing Pure Zoodiacs.
Both duelists made small talk before the Match began. “Congratulations by the way,” Chin remarked, referring to Yu’s Worlds win. “I was rooting for you the entire time.” They quipped back and forth with Yu teasing the notion that he might be running Chain Burn.
Chin opened the Match with Fire Formation – Tenki, searching Zoodiac Ratpier. He Normal Summoned it, activating its effect to send Zoodiac Ramram to his Graveyard. He overlaid it with Zoodiac Boarbow, detached Ratpier and Special Summoned another from his Deck. From there he overlaid for Zoodiac Chakanine and detached to revive his Ramram. He overlaid Chakanine with Zoodiac Broadbull, detached to search Zoodiac Whiptail, and activated Zoodiac Barrage. He blew away his Ramram with Barrage’s effect, Special Summoned another Ramram, and used it to revive his Chakanine. He Xyz Summoned Zoodiac Tigermortar next, targeting Chakanine and Boarbow, then Chakanine’d for Ramram.

Chin Link Summoned Missus Radiant with Tigermortar and Ramram, then Xyz Summoned Abyss Dweller with Ratpier and Ramram. He overlaid Chakanine for Zoodiac Drident and Set two cards to his backrow to finish out.
Yu had Solemn Warning; Spellbook of Secrets; Terraforming; Windwitch – Snow Bell; Aleister the Invoker; and Windwitch – Glass Bell. He searched Magical Meltdown with Terraforming and Chin responded with Dweller’s effect, detaching Ratpier. Yu activated Meltdown and Chin flipped Twin Twisters, discarding Shuffle Reborn to destroy Meltdown. Yu activated Spellbook of Secrets to get Spellbook of Knowledge from his Deck, then Normal Summoned Glass Bell to search his Deck for Windwitch – Ice Bell.
“Enter Battle Phase?”
“Sure.”
Yu attacked Drident with Glass Bell, and Chin attached Zoodiac Whiptail to Drident to banish the Glass Bell. In Main Phase 2, Yu Special Summoned Windwitch – Ice Bell, searched another Ice Bell, and Special Summoned it, dishing out 500 damage. He activated Knowledge next, drawing Maxx “C” and Book of Eclipse, then sent one of his Ice Bells to the Graveyard. He Set Warning and Book. When Yu moved to his End Phase, Chin blew away his remaining Ice Bell with Zoodiac Drident.
Chin moved to Main Phase 1 and pitched Zoodiac Whiptail for Twin Twisters, targeting both of Yu’s Set backrows. Chin considered Book of Eclipse, Chained it, and flipped Dweller and Drident face-down. When Chin popped his Tenki for Zoodiac Barrage, Yu Chained the effect of Maxx “C” – Chin Special Summoned Whiptail and Yu drew Gadarla, the Mystery Dust Kaiju.
“Enter battle.” Chin attacked with his Whiptail and Missus Radiant, dropping Yu to 3600 LP. He moved to his End Phase, flipped up his two Xyz Monsters from Book of Eclipse’s effect, and drew two.
Yu drew Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit. Chin activated Abyss Dweller’s effect again and Yu Normal Summoned Aleister the Invoker, searching his Deck for Invocation. He activated it, Fusing Aleister from his field and Ghost Ogre from his hand to Summon Invoked Mechaba! “May I read Missus Radiant?” Chin passed it over for Yu’s perusal; Yu read it for a moment, then Tributed away Chin’s Zoodiac Drident to stick him with Gadarla, the Mystery Dust Kaiju. Yu sent Invoked Mechaba to attack over Chin’s Whiptail, dropping Chin to 6700 LP. That was it for the turn.
“Cards in hand, one?”
“One,” confirmed Yu.
Chin activated his Barrage effect to destroy itself, Special Summoning Zoodiac Thoroughblade from his Deck. He attacked Mechaba with Gadarla! “Missuss Radiant: Gadarla loses attack,” noted Yu. Chin’s Gadarla smashed into Mechaba, and was destroyed. Oof. Chin moved to Main Phase 2. He overlaid Zoodiac Hammerkong onto Zoodiac Thoroughblade, then overlaid that with Zoodiac Drident. He Set all three of his remaining cards to his backrow.

Yu drew Spellbook of Knowledge, holding Windwitch – Snow Bell. “Invocation, effect from the grave.” He activated Invocation’s effect, putting it back in his Deck and retrieving his Aleister the Invoker. He Normal Summoned it, considered a moment, then announced he wasn’t using Aleister’s effect. “Activate Spellbook of Knowledge.” Yu drew another Aleister and an Invocation. He attacked Drident with Mechaba, Chin responded with Drident’s effect, Yu activated Mechaba’s ability pitching Snow Bell, and when Chin responded with Dimensional Barrier Yu conceded the Duel!
Cameron Chin makes a pretty big bungle with that Gadarla, but manages to control the bulk of Game 1 anyways, outplaying the Dragon Duel World Champion in a final flurry of cards to capture the first Duel! Both Duelists spent a little time with their Side Decks before heading to Game 2.
Yu opened with Spellbook of Secrets; Book of Eclipse; Solemn Warning; Solemn Strike; and Floodgate Trap Hole. Secrets got him Spellbook of Knowledge and he promptly Set his entire hand! “This feels a lot like Chain Burn.” Yu grinned.
Chin laughed. “That’s… interesting!” He shuffled his hand a moment, looked guilty for a second, then pitched Zoodiac Combo for Twin Twisters to destroy Yu’s Book of Eclipse and Floodgate Trap Hole. “I’m… good at this game.” He Normal Summoned Zoodiac Ramram, overlaid it with Zoodiac Broadbull, then detached to try and search; Yu shut him down with Solemn Strike. Chin passed.
Yu drew Artifact Scythe and Set it to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.
Chin Normal Summoned Zoodiac Whiptail, attacked for 1200 damage, and moved to Main Phase 2 to overlay Whiptail with Zoodiac Hammerkong, then Zoodiac Broadbull. Yu blasted it with Solemn Warning. He yelled at his Deck: “Please don’t brick!”
Yu drew another Spellbook of Knowledge and Set it. Ouch.
Chin Normal Summoned Zoodiac Ratpier and used its effect to send Zoodiac Thoroughblade to his Graveyard. He overlaid Ratpier with Zoodiac Boarbow, detached Ratpier to Special Summon another Ratpier from his Deck, and overlaid Boarbow with Zoodiac Chakanine. He activated its effect to revive Thoroughblade:
“Second Warning,” jested Yu.
“It’s so good!” replied Chin.
“Nobody runs it,” grinned Yu.
Chin Link Summoned Missus Radiant, leaving Ratpier n the field, then used his Zoodiac Combo to return Hammerkong, Boarbow, Broadbull, Chakanine, and Ratpier to his Deck to draw a card. He overlaid Ratpier with Zoodiac Tigermortar, now Linked to Missus Radiant, and attached Whiptail to it. He overlaid for Zoodiac Broadbull, detached to search his Deck for another Whiptail, then overlaid for Zoodiac Drident. He attacked with Missus Radiant to drop Yu to 1400 LP, and when he attacked with Drident Yu extended the handshake.
Ryan Yu just can’t get a break, as dead card after dead card stack up on his field! Cameron Chin takes a swift 2-0 victory and moves on undefeated into Round 2, as Pure Zoodiacs beat out Windwitch Invoked.
