Round 9 Feature Match: Aaron Furman vs. Tom Braudo

August 27th, 2017

Aaron Furman and Tom Braudo are the only two undefeated Duelists left in the tournament, and while that alone might not be enough for a Round 9 Feature Match on its own, an extra factor makes this Match intriguing: Tom Braudo isn’t just undefeated; he’s undefeated with Demise True Dracos.  As you saw yesterday in our Top Table Updates, pure True Draco Decks aren’t big in this tournament, and this is actually our first Feature Match with the strategy.

Tom Braudo is from Israel, and actually just moved here to Toronto; he was struggling a bit to deal with the cold here this morning at the Metro Toronto Convention Center.  His opponent Aaron Furman is from New Jersey, and is piloting True Draco Zoodiacs.  Furman’s been riding in style all weekend with his own VIP table thanks to his winning the Ultimate Duelist title, but now he’s back at the Feature Match area once again.

Let’s see how this pans out.

Furman opened with Pot of Desires, banishing ten cards to draw two.  He Normal Summoned Zoodiac Thoroughblade, pitched Zoodiac Whiptail for its effect, and drew.  He overlaid Thoroughblade with Zoodiac Drident, threw Zoodiac Chakanine over that, and detached Drident to Special Summon it with Chakanine’s effect.  From there he overlaid Chakanine with Zoodiac Broadbull, searched his Deck for Zoodiac Ratpier, and overlaid into Zoodiac Tigermortar, detaching Broadbull to attach Whiptail to Drident.  Furman overlaid Zoodiac Hammerkong over Tigermortar, Set two cards to his back row and ended. He detached Tigermortar for Hammerkong.

Braudo had a hand of two True Draco Heritage; Cosmic Cyclone; Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King; Dragonic Diagram; and True Draco Apocalypse.  He Set Heritage, then Apocalypse, and Tributed both for Master Peace, targeting Hammerkong and one of Furman’s backrows for destruction.  Furman Chained  Drident’s effect targeting Braudo’s Master Peace, Braudo Chained its effect targeting Furman’s Return, banishing his Apocalypse to pay for the effect, and when Furman Chained the Return, Braudo responded by Chaining his Cosmic Cyclone to banish it.

That exchange let Braudo draw three cards with True Draco Heritage, getting him Pot of Duality, Terraforming, and Disciples of the True Dracophoenix.

Braudo wanted to play Disciples of the True Dracophoenix and activate it, but he couldn’t use its effect yet due to a low count in his Graveyard.  He activated Pot of Duality instead, revealing True King’s Return and two Card of Demise!  He took Demise, Set his last card, and activated Demise to draw Unending Nightmares, True Draco Apocalypse, and Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King.  He blew away his True Draco Heritage with Dragonic Diagram to search Majesty Maiden, the True Dracocaster, and used Heritage to shuffle back three cards and draw another Card of Demise.  He used Disciples to Tribute Summon Dracocaster, attacked with it into Drident, and Furman responded with Whiptail’s effect. Braudo activated Dracocaster’s effect in response to search his Deck for Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter.  Drident hit the Graveyard and Dracocaster was banished by Whiptail.

Braudo activated Terraforming to get another Dragonic Diagram, activated it, then used its effect to destroy Master Peace from his hand, fetching True Draco Heritage.  He activated it, Tributed it for Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter, and Set his remaining three cards to his back row.  “It’s your turn.”

Furman activated Fire Formation – Tenki, and Braudo Chained Unending Nightmare.  He activated True King’s Return from his Deck with Dinomight Knight’s ability.  Furman Normal Summoned Zoodiac Ratpier, sending Zoodiac Combo to his Graveyard, and Braudo revived his Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King.  He used True Draco Apocalypse to destroy his Return, and Furman had Raigeki to clear the field.  Play was to Braudo.

Braudo drew True King’s Return and Furman activated Zoodiac Combo’s effect in the Graveyard.  He shuffled back Zoodiac Whiptail, Zoodiac Thoroughblade, Zoodiac Tigermortar, Zoodiac Hammerkong, and Zoodiac Broadbull for a draw.  Braudo activated Card of Demise, drawing Master Peace, Disciples, and Raigeki.  He activated Disciples to shuffle his Dinomight, Heritage, and another Disciples back into his Deck, then drew Pot of Desires!  He played it immediately to banish ten cards and draw two – Magic Deflector and Pot of Duality – and played Duality to reveal Imperial Order, Dinomight Knight, and True Draco Heritage.  He took Heritage.

Braudo Tributed Disciples and Apocalypse, bringing down Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King, and used Heritage to draw another Heritage and another Dinomight.  He Tributed Heritage for Dinomight Knight, destroyed his Raigeki with Diagram to get True Draco Apocalypse, then Set everything to his back row.

Play was to Furman, facing down a full backrow with Unending Nightmare, a Dinomight Knight, and a Master Peace.   He Normal Summoned Zoodiac Thoroughblade, and when Braudo flipped True Draco Apocalypse and True King’s Return Furman conceded.

Tom Braudo opens Day 2 with what can only be described as a giant blowout against one of the most respected competitors in the room! A constant stream of searches and draws was just too much for Furman to handle, and victory in Duel 1 feels almost academic for Braudo.  Play moved to Duel 2 with 25 minutes remaining in the Round.

Furman opened with Fire Formation – Tenki searching Zoodiac Ratpier.  He Normal Summoned it to send Zoodiac Combo to his Graveyard, then overlaid Ratpier with Zoodiac Boarbow.  He detached Ratpier to Special Summon his second Ratpier from his Deck, then overlaid Boarbow with Zoodiac Chakanine, detaching Boarbow to revive it.  He overlaid Chakanine with Zoodiac Broadbull, detached Chakanine, and searched his Deck for Zoodiac Ramram.  He activated Diagram to destroy Ramram and search Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King, then revived Chakanine with Ramram’s ability.

He followed up with Zoodiac Tigermortar to attach Broadbull to Chakanine, detaching it to revive Ramram.  Boarbow and Tigermortar combined to make Missus Radiant, then he overlaid Chakanine into Zoodiac Hammerkong, and then Zoodiac Drident!  He destroyed Ramram with his Drident’s effect to revive Zoodiac Ratpier, overlaid both for Abyss Dweller, and Set two cards to finish out strong.

This time Braudo had Pot of Duality; Dragonic Diagram; Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter; two Card of Demise; and Dark Hole.  Furman activated Abyss Dweller’s effect and Braudo activated Pot of Duality, revealing Disciples of the True Dracophoenix, Skill Drain, and Card of Demise; he took Disciples and shuffled the rest back.  Braudo followed up by Setting Demise, asking for a response: Furman responded by banishing Zoodiac Combo, returning all of his Xyz Monsters and Ramram to their respective Decks for a draw.

Braudo continued, this time Setting Disciples.  “Okay.”  Braudo Tributed it for Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter, attacked Drident with it, and Furman detached to destroy it. Braudo Chained Dinomight Knight’s ability, searching his Deck for True Draco Apocalypse and adding it to his hand.  Dinomight Knight went down.  Braudo moved to Main Phase 2 and activated Dragonic Diagram; Furman responded with True King’s Return, Tributing it off along with Heritage for Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King, and destroying Diagram with Heritage’s effect.

Braudo Set two cards to his backrow and activated Demise, drawing Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King, Dragonic Diagram, and Raigeki.  He flipped Dark Hole and Furman lost everything but Master Peace.  He used Missus Radiant’s effect to get back his Zoodiac Ratpier.  Braudo activated Dragonic Diagram and Furman banished Heritage to destroy the Field Spell with Master Peace.

That was it!  Braudo conceded immediately and we moved to Game 3!

This time Braudo opened with a hand of Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter; True Draco Apocalypse; and a whopping three copies of Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King!  He Set True Draco Apocalypse and ended.  This looked like a disaster.

Furman activated Pot of Desires, banishing ten cards off the top of his Deck to draw two.  He Set one card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, activated True Draco Heritage, and wanted to Tribute it away.  Braudo spent a moment considering, then announced he had no response.  Furman Tributed Heritage and his Set True Draco Apocalypse for Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King, and that was all Braudo needed to see.  He immediately flopped his hand and gave Furman the handshake.

Tom Braudo opens the Match with an enormous start, but falls short in Duel 2 and draws a shocking train wreck of a hand to lose Duel 3.  A heartbreaking bit of bad luck costs Tom Braudo the Match, and Aaron Furman remains undefeated moving into Round 10, an absolute lock for the Top 32!
