Round 1 Feature Match: Pedro Benhumea Salto vs. Gerardo Sotomayor Meza
For our first Feature Match of the day, we’ve got Pedro Benhumea, from Mexico City! Benhumea won the 2017 Central American WCQ just a few months ago, using Zoodiac. He’s moved on to True Draco for today’s event, looking to Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King for victory. Benhumea’s up against Geroardo Sotomayor, from Morelia, Michoacan. He’s using Pendulum Magicians today, a very popular choice.
Duel 1
Benhumea won the dice roll and chose to play first. He began with a hand of Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, Imperial Order, Spellbook of Knowledge, Unending Nightmare, and Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King. He Normal Summoned his Magician and added Spellbook of Secrets to his hand, then activated it to add another Spellbook of Knowledge to his hand. He activated it, and Sotomayor used Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it. Benhumea Set his two Trap Cards to finish his turn.
Sotomayor played Performapal Skullcrobat Joker, adding Wisdom-Eye Magician to his hand. He activated it and Black Fang Magician, and Benhumea flipped Unending Nightmare to destroy the Wisdom-Eye. Sotomayor activated Astrograph Sorcerer, Special Summoning it and adding another Wisdom-Eye Magician to his hand. He played Pot of Desires next, banishing ten cards, and Benhumea flipped Imperial Order! Sotomayor sent Joker to attack, and attacked with Astrograph Sorcerer.
Benhumea drew Ignis Heat, the True Dracowarrior, and paid 700 Life Points for Imperial Order. He used Unending Nightmare to destroy Black Fang Magician, then Tributed his Trap Cards to play Master Peace! It attacked and destroyed Astrograph Sorcerer. He Set Spellbook of Knowledge, then used Master Peace’s effect, banishing Unending Nightmare, to destroy Skullcrobat Joker.
Sotomayor played Wisdom-Eye Magician and Harmonizing Magician in his Pendulum Zones, and used Wisdom-Eye’s effect to replace itself with Oafdragon Magician. Benhumea used Master Peace to destroy Oafdragon, and Sotomayor played Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer in his Pendulum Zone in its stead. He Pendulum Summoned Black Fang Magician in Defense Position.
Benhumea drew Cosmic Cyclone and Set it. Master Peace destroyed Black Fang in battle.
Sotomayor had nothing but his Pendulum Scales and the card he just drew. He Pendulum Summoned Black Fang again, then Normal Summoned Purple Poison Magician. He sent Purple Poison to attack Master Peace, losing the battle but triggering Purple Poison’s effect to destroy Master Peace! Black Fang attacked directly, wiping out Benhumea’s remaining Life Points!
Benhumea paid a ton of Life Points to control the early Duel with Imperial Order and Unending Nightmare, but took too many direct attacks in the process! Sotomayor drew Purple Poison Magician at the perfect moment to capitalize! Benhumea chose to play first again for the next Duel.
Duel 2
Benhumea began with a hand of Dragonic Diagram, True Draco Heritage, Pot of Duality, Card of Demise, Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King. He played Pot of Duality, revealing Solemn Strike, Pot of Duality, and Card of Demise. He added his second Card of Demise to his hand. He played Diagram, using it to destroy his Master Peace, and added True Draco Apocalypse to his hand. He Set everything and activated Card of Demise, but Sotomayor had Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Benhumea flipped Heritage and passed his turn.
Sotomayor Normal Summoned Denko Sekka! He played Pendulum Call, discarding Astrograph Sorcerer, to add Black Fang Magician and Harmonizing Magician to his hand. He played Wisdom-Eye Magician and Purple Poison Magician in his Pendulum Zone, and Pendulum Summoned Black Fang and another Harmonizing Magician from his hand. Harmonizing’s effect brought Double Iris Magician to the field. He tuned Harmonizing Magician to Black Fang for Ignister Prominence, the Blasting Dracoslayer, and Special Summoned Luster Pendulum, the Dracoslayer in Defense Position. He attacked with Denko Sekka and Double Iris, using Purple Poison’s Pendulum Effect to power up Double Iris – and Purple Poison wasn’t destroyed thanks to Pendulum Call! Finally, Sotomayor used Ignister Prominence’s effect to destroy his Double Iris and shuffle Benhumea’s Diagram back into the Deck. Double Iris added Star Pendulumgraph to Sotomayor’s hand, and he activated it.
Benhumea drew his last card, and conceded immediately! The combo of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring negating his Card of Demise, followed by Denko Sekka to lock down everything he’d just Set, was just too much to handle!
Gerardo Sotomayor Meza is victorious, with Pendulum Magicians!
