Round 8 Feature Match: Alejandro Aldair Navarro Sanchez vs. Domingo Obed Espejel Jimenez
Welcome to Day 2 of YCS Guadalajara! Alejandro Navarro is here from Mazatlan, and he’s packing a dedicated SPYRAL Deck! Nobody expected this, and he’s taking advantage with this amazing strategy. He has a 6-1 record, so if he can win two more Matches he’ll likely make it to the Top 16! He’s facing Domingo Espejel, from Mexico City. He’s one of the many Pendulum Magician Duelists in attendance, banking on the amazingly resilient and efficient Magicians from Pendulum Evolution. Pendulums are the most represented strategy here at YCS Guadalajara, so Navarro will definitely be prepared for them. Espejel, on the other hand, is probably not expecting SPYRALs.
Duel 1
Navarro won the roll and chose to play first. He began with a hand of SPYRAL Resort, Twin Twisters, SPYRAL Super Agent, SPYRAL GEAR – Drone, and Foolish Burial Goods. He played Resort to add SPYRAL Quik-Fix to his hand, then Summoned it to get SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red. Foolish Burial Goods put SPYRAL Mission – Assault in the Graveyard, and he banished it to Special Summon Drone from his hand. Its effect let him see the top of Espejel’s Deck: Star Pendulumgraph and 2 Wisdom-Eye Magician. He put the Pendulumgraph on top. He then Special Summoned Super Agent, by declaring Spell! The joys of counterintelligence. He used Quik-Fix and Super Agent to Link Summon Missus Radiant in the right Extra Monster Zone. He played Big Red to bring Quik-Fix back, adding another Big Red to his hand. He stacked Quik-Fix and Drone for Sylvan Princessprite in the middle zone, and used its effect, sending Blackwing – Gofu the Vague Shadow to the Graveyard. He Set Twin Twisters, and in the End Phase used Resort to shuffle Gofu back into the Deck.
Espejel played Star Pendulumgraph and Double Iris Magician in his back row, then activated Duelist Alliance to put Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer in his hand. He played Astrograph Sorcerer in his back row as well, and Navarro flipped Twin Twisters! He discarded Big Red and destroyed both Astrograph and Star Pendulumgraph! Espejel had another Astrograph, though, and he played it to Pendulum Summon the first Astrograph and the Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer! The Pendulum Sorcerer destroyed Double Iris, letting him add both Performapal Skullcrobat Joker and Star Pendulumgraph to his hand. He played Joker to get Wisdom-Eye Magician, then activated both Star Pendulumgraph and Wisdom-Eye. He used Wisdom-Eye’s effect followed by Star Pendulumgraph, getting Double Iris on the field and Harmonizing Magician in his hand. He used Double Iris’s Pendulum Effect, targeting Astrograph Sorcerer, and searched out Time Pendulumgraph. He activated Harmonizing Magician in his back row, then moved to the Battle Phase. Joker destroyed Missus Radiant in battle, and Navarro put Super Agent in his hand. Astrograph crushed Princessprite, dealing double battle damage! Finaly, Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer attacked directly. Espejel Set the last two cards in his hand in his back row.
Navarro drew SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue. He used Resort to add SPYRAL Sleeper to his hand. He activated Super Agent in his hand, declaring Monster, and Espejel revealed Purple Poison Magician! Since the Pendulum Magician Deck plays so many monsters, it was a safe guess. Super Agent hit the field and destroyed Star Pendulumgraph. He used Quik-Fix’s effect in the Graveyard, discarding Rescue to Special Summon it, and he added SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort to his hand. He banished Rescue from the Graveyard to Special Summon Drone, and used its effect. Espejel had Purple Poison, Black Fang Magician, and Pot of Desires. He put the monsters on top, with Black Fang first. He stacked Quik-Fix and Drone for Ghostrick Dullahan. It halved the ATK of Astrograph Sorcerer by detaching Quik-Fix. Navarro discarded Last Resort to bring Quik-Fix back again, adding another Last Resort to his hand. He banished three SPYRAL cards from his Graveyard to Special Summon Sleeper, then equipped it with Last Resort! Finally, he moved to the Battle Phase. Super Agent destroyed Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer, and Sleeper attacked Astrograph Sorcerer. Navarro used Sleeper’s effect next, targeting itself along with the Astrograph in the Pendulum Zone and a face-down card. Espejel flipped the targeted card – Time Pendulumgraph, destroying his Harmonizing Magician and SPYRAL Resort – he had to get rid of Resort before he could target the SPYRAL monsters. Sleeper’s effect then destroyed Astrograph and Time Pendulumgraph, and it survived its own destruction thanks to Last Resort!
Espejel Normal Summoned Black Fang, and Sleeper’s effect once again targeted itself, as well as Joker and a Set Time Pendulumgraph. Once again, Last Resort kept Sleeper on the field!
Navarro drew another Resort! He activated it and added another Super Agent to his hand. He Special Summoned it by “predicting” the Purple Poison Magician on top of Espejel’s Deck. Sleeper wiped out Black Fang with its effect, and Navarro moved to the Battle Phase. Dullahan and both Super Agents attacked, and Sleeper finished Espejel off!
Navarro started strong, then got reduced to almost no cards, and still managed to pull off a huge win with a ridiculous Sleeper + Last Resort combo!
Duel 2
Espejel chose to play first in this Duel, and led with two cards in his back row.
Navarro opened with Instant Fusion, 2 Blackwing – Gofu the Vague Shadow, Super Agent, Quik-Fix, and Terraforming. He Special Summoned Gofu along with two Vague Shadow Tokens, and used Terraforming to get SPYRAL Resort. He played it, but Espejel banished it with Cosmic Cyclone. Navarro played Quik-Fix, adding Big Red to his hand. He used a token to play Link Spider, then combined Gofu with Quik-Fix for Coral Dragon behind the Spider. He used its effect, discarding his spare Gofu to destroy Espejel’s Set Wavering Eyes. He used Super Agent’s effect declaring Monster, and Espejel revealed Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer! He Special Summoned Super Agent, then used Big Red to get Quik-Fix back, and added Drone to his hand. He tuned Coral Dragon to Quik-Fix for Ancient Fairy Dragon, and Coral’s effect let him draw Maxx “C”. He combined Link Spider with Ancient Fairy Dragon for Gaia Saber, the Lightning Shadow, then discarded Drone to Special Summon Quik-Fix and add SPYRAL GEAR – Fully Armed to his hand. Instant Fusion brought Lyrilusc – Independent Nightingale to the field, and it dealt 500 damage with its effect. He stacked it with Quik-Fix for Sylvan Princessprite, which added Pendulum Hole to his hand. He discarded Maxx “C” to bring back Quik-Fix again, this time searching for Last Resort. He equipped Super Agent with Last Resort and Fully Armed, and went to the Battle Phase! He attacked with everything, winning the Duel on his first turn!
Alejandro Navarro is your victor, with SPYRALs!
