Welcome to Round 1 of YCS San Diego! We have David Alives, from Brea, CA, packing an innovative Subterror Invoked strategy! He has some combos with Subterror Nemesis Warrior and Subterror Behemoth Phospheroglacier, allowing big plays into cards like Naturia Beast. He’s also packing a whopping 8 Field Spells! His opponent is Jonathan Lu from San Francisco, CA, using a Lightsworn-Zombie-SPYRAL hybrid. Lightsworn Zombies has been a strong Deck over the last year, but we haven’t really seen it combined with SPYRAL before – will Lu’s mixture pay off? It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Alives won the dice roll and chose to play first. He had Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Magical Meltdown PSY-Framegear Gamma, Glow-Up Bulb, and Armageddon Knight. He played Meltdown to add Aleister the Invoker to his hand, then Normal Summoned Armageddon Knight to put Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson to the Graveyard. He paid 4000 Life Points to Special Summon Destrudo, and tuned it to Armageddon Knight for Ancient Fairy Dragon in Defense Position (Destrudo went back to the Deck). Fairy Dragon destroyed Meltdown to give Alives 1000 Life Points and put The Hidden City in his hand. He played it, searched for Subterror Nemesis Warrior, and used Ancient Fairy Dragon to Special Summon it. Its effect sent Subterror Behemoth Phospheroglacier to the Graveyard, then Tributed itself and Ancient Fairy Dragon to Special Summon Phospheroglacier face-down. He used The Hidden City to flip it up, triggering its effect, and he Special Summoned Warrior from the Graveyard in Attack Position. Phospheroglacier sent Destrudo to the Graveyard again. He flipped Phospheroglacier face-down to finish his turn.

Lu Normal Summoned Shiranui Solitaire and Tributed it for its effect, but Alives used Ash Blossom to negate it. Lu Set one card in his back row.

Alives drew Droll & Lock Bird. He played Aleister and put Invocation in his hand. Then, he used Warrior to send Subterror Fiendess to the Graveyard, and Tributed Warrior and Aleister to Special Summon Fiendess in Defense Position. He Flip Summoned Phospheroglacier, using it to send Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm to the Graveyard, and also Special Summoned Warrior again. He played Invocation, banishing Aleister and Ancient Fairy Dragon from his Graveyard to Fusion Summon Invoked Mechaba! He used Invocation’s effect in the Graveyard, then paid 2500 Life Points to bring back Destrudo again. His monsters attacked, wiping out Lu’s Life Points in his first Battle Phase!

Duel 2

Lu began this Duel with Brilliant Fusion, sending Gem-Knight Garnet and Performage Trick Clown to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon Gem-Knight Seraphinite, and took 1000 damage to Special Summon Trick Clown. Charge of the Light Brigade sent Dark Hole, Fairy Tail – Snow, and That Grass Looks Greener (ouch) to the Graveyard, adding Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn to his hand. He Normal Summoned it and had it send SPYRAL Super Agent and Wulf, Lightsworn Beast to the Graveyard, and Special Summoned Wulf. He used his extra Normal Summon from Seraphinite, and played a Super Agent from his hand. He used Wulf, Agent, and Seraphinite to play Decode Talker, then used Raiden and Trick Clown to play Minerva, the Exalted Lightsworn! He detached Raiden to use its effect, and Alives used PSY-Framegear Gamma from his hand! He Special Summoned Gamma and PSY-Frame Driver, and negated and destroyed Minerva! Minerva’s effect sent Maxx “C”, Solar Recharge, and Raigeki to the Graveyard. Lu passed his turn, and the PSY-Frames were banished.

Alives had a hand of Armageddon Knight, Aleister the Invoker, Terraforming, Dragon Ravine, and drew a second Terraforming. He played Aleister to get Invocation, and looked at Lu’s Graveyard, finding LIGHT and EARTH monsters. He played Dragon Ravine, using its effect to toss a Terraforming and send Destrudo to the Graveyard. Lu responded with Fairy Tail – Snow in his Graveyard, banishing his Gem-Knights and a bunch of Spell Cards to bring Snow back and turn Aleister face-down, hoping to block Destrudo. Alives played Invocation, banishing Aleister and Trick Clown to play Invoked Mechaba. He used Invocation’s Graveyard effect, then sent Mechaba to destroy Snow in battle.

Lu played Left Arm Offering, banishing his hand, and Lu used Mechaba (discarding Terraforming) to negate it. Lu revived Snow, leaving his Graveyard with nothing but a Super Agent, and turned Mechaba face-down. Decode Talker destroyed Mechaba in battle.

Alives drew Reinforcement of the Army. He played Aleister to get Invocation again, then Special Summoned Destrudo from the Graveyard by paying 4000 Life Points. He Synchro Summoned Ancient Fairy Dragon, and Destrudo went to the bottom of the Deck. Ancient Fairy Dragon destroyed Dragon Ravine, getting The Hidden City, and he used it to get Subterror Fiendess. Reinforcement of the Army then put Subterror Nemesis Warrior in his hand, and he Special Summoned Warrior with Fairy Dragon. Warrior sent Subterror Behemoth Umastryx to the Graveyard, and Tributed Fairy Dragon and Warrior to Special Summon Umastryx face-down. He used The Hidden City to flip it up and banish Snow, and he also Special Summoned Warrior in Attack Position. He played Invocation, fusing Aleister with Armageddon Knight from his hand, for Invoked Caliga in Defense Position. He flipped Umastryx face-down with its effect.

Lu drew his card, and had nothing but that card and his Decode Talker. He Set a monster. Decode Talker attacked the face-down Umastryx, and Alives used The Hidden City to negate the attack.

Alives drew Instant Fusion. He combined Caliga and Warrior for Diamond Dire Wolf, having it target itself and Decode Talker. Lu Tributed his Set SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort with Decode Talker to negate it. He flipped Umastryx face-down, then Flip Summoned it to finally banish Decode Talker. He played Instant Fusion to play Invoked Raidjin, then had Warrior send Phospheroglacier to the Graveyard. He Tributed Warrior and Raidjin to Special Summon Phospheroglacier face-down, then used The Hidden City to flip it up and send Destrudo to the Graveyard. He used Invocation’s effect in the Graveyard, then Normal Summoned Aleister to put Invocation back in his hand. He Special Summoned Destrudo again, and Synchro Summoned Black Rose Moonlight Dragon. He moved to the Battle Phase, and wiped out Lu’s Life Points!

David Alives is victorious, with his Subterror Invoked Deck!
