Round 1 Feature Match: Ahdam Brown vs. Manuel Alex Lopez Marquez

February 24th, 2018

Welcome to Round 1 of the 2018 UDS Winter Invitational! We’re kicking things off with two Duelists from California! Ahdam Brown is from nearby Oakland, and is playing a Deskbot Deck! Deskbots are capable of some awesome combos, but we haven’t seen too many of them in competitive play so many Duelists don’t even know how they work. His opponent, Manuel Alex Lopez Marquez, made the trip up here from Orange County, and he’s using a Pendulum Magician Deck. Pendulums won YCS Atlanta last week, and Lopez is one of many Duelists relying on them for this tournament.

Duel 1

Brown won the die roll and chose to play second. Lopez started with Black Fang Magician in his Pendulum Zone, followed by Duelist Alliance to get Pendulum Call. He used Call, discarding Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm, getting Purple Poison Magician and Harmonizing Magician in his hand. He Special Summoned Darkwurm and added Supreme King Gate Zero to his hand. He Normal Summoned Purple Poison and Link Summoned Heavymetalfoes Electrumite, using its effect to put Astrograph Sorcerer in his Extra Deck. He played Gate Zero in his Pendulum Zone, and used Electrumite’s effect to destroy it and get Astrograph in his hand. He Special Summoned Astrograph and added another Gate Zero to his hand, then drew a card with Electrumite. He played a Purple Poison in his Pendulum Zone, and Pendulum Summoned Gate Zero and Purple Poison from his Extra Deck, and Harmonizing Magician from his hand. Harmonizing’s effect brought another Purple Poison to the field, giving Lopez six monsters! He used Gate Zero and Astrograph to Xyz Summon Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon, then used Absolute and Electrumite to Link Summon Zefra Metaltron! Absolute’s effect brought Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon to the field as well. He stacked Harmonizing and a Purple Poison for Tornado Dragon, and passed his turn.

Brown had a hand of Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju, Deskbot 001, Symphonic Warrior Guitaar, Instant Fusion, and Kumongous, the Sticky String Kaiju. He drew Deskbot 006. He Tributed Tornado to hand over Gameciel, then played Guitaar in his Pendulum Zone. He used its effect, discarding Deskbot 001 to Special Summon Symphonic Warrior Miccs. He Special Summoned Kumongous next, then played Instant Fusion – Lopez negated it with Vortex Dragon. Brown had Kumongous destroy Gameciel in battle.

Lopez used Black Fang to halve the ATK of Miccs, and when Black Fang was destroyed Lopez Special Summoned Astrograph from his hand. He used Astrograph and Purple Poison to play Electrumite, putting another Astrograph in his Extra Deck. He had it destroy the Purple Poison in his Pendulum Zone to add his other Purple Poison to his hand and draw a card. He played Supreme King Gate Infinity and Gate Zero in his back row, destroying them to get Instant Fusion! He activated it to Fusion Summon Lyrilusc – Independent Nightingale and dealt 500 damage to Brown. He then used Metaltron, Electrumite, and Nightingale to play Saryuja Skull Dread! He played Black Fang and Purple Poison in his Pendulum Zones, and Pendulum Summoned from his Extra Deck Black Fang and two Astrograph! He used an Astrograph and Black Fang for Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom! Its effect let it become a copy of Independent Nightingale – with its new effect along with Skull Dread’s, Starving Venom was up to 7100 ATK! He had it blast Brown for 4000 points of effect damage, then attacked to finish him off!

Lopez makes a huge combo of Independent Nightingale and Starving Venom, taking the first Duel!

Duel 2

Brown opted to play first this time, starting with a hand of Twin Twisters, two copies of Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, Wavering Eyes, and Symphonic Warrior Miccs. He Set Wavering Eyes and Twin Twisters.

Lopez played Chronograph Sorcerer in the Pendulum Zone, using its effect, and Brown used Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy it. Lopez followed with Pot of Desires, then Darkwurm in his Pendulum Zone. He used its effect, and put Gate Zero in his Pendulum Zone. Brown flipped Wavering Eyes, and Lopez played his own Wavering Eyes! Lopez’s copy destroyed both Pendulums, adding Astrograph Sorcerer to his hand. He Special Summoned it, adding a Chronograph to his hand. He activated Chronograph in his Pendulum Zone, but couldn’t use its effect since it was limited to once per turn. He Normal Summoned Darkwurm and activated its effect to get Gate Zero to his hand. He played Instant Fusion to Special Summon Independent Nightingale, and had it dish out 500 damage. He used it to play Linkuriboh, then used Darkwurm and Astrograph to play Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom! He had it copy Independent Nightingale and moments later it was all over!

Manuel Alex Lopez Marquez is the victor, with Pendulum Magicians!
