Round 12 Feature Match: Derek Freeman vs. Kien Ly

February 25th, 2018

This is the last round of Swiss before Top 8!  We’re at Table 12 and we have Derek Freeman from Fairfield, California with a Mekk-Knight Invoked Deck facing off against Kien Ly from right here in Sacramento with his Pendulum Magician Deck.  It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Freeman won the roll and elected to go second.

Ly started off with Mythical Beast Master Cerberus in the Pendulum Zone and used the effect; but Freeman used Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it. Ly then used Dragon Shrine to send Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm from the Deck to the Graveyard. Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm’s effect was used to Special Summon itself and its effect tried to add a card from the Deck to his hand; but Freeman Chained Effect Veiler to negate it. Ly then Normal Summoned Timegazer Magician and the 2 monsters were used to Link Summon Heavymetalfoes Electrumite. Its effect was activated, but Freeman Chained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy Heavymetalfoes Electrumite! The effect resolved anyway and sent Astrograph Sorcerer from the Deck to the Extra Deck. After the Chain resolved, Ly activated another Astrograph Sorcerer from his hand, Special Summoning it in Defense Position.

Freeman Set Mind Control across from Astrograph Sorcerer then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Blue Sky to that column! Freeman used the effect to add Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall from his Deck to his hand. Freeman then activated the Set Mind Control, taking Astrograph, putting it in the far-left Main Monster Zone. Freeman then attacked with Blue Sky. In Main Phase 2, he used Astrograph Sorcerer and Mekk-Knight Blue Sky to Link Summon Ib the World Chalice Priestess!

Ly drew to 2 cards in hand. He activated Master Cerberus’s effect again but Freeman had Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Ly then activated Allure of Darkness, drawing 2 cards and banishing Stargazer Magician from his hand. He then placed Chronograph Sorcerer in the other Pendulum Zone, then proceeded to Pendulum Summon Astrograph Sorcerer from the Extra Deck. It attacked and destroyed Ib.

Freeman drew Terraforming. He Set it across from Astrograph Sorcerer and Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall from his hand! He then activated the Set Terraforming, adding Magical Meltdown from his Deck to hand his. The Field Spell was activated to add Aleister the Invoker to hand, then Aleister was Normal Summoned to add Invocation to his hand. He activated Invocation using Aleister the Invoker and Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit from his own Graveyard to Fusion Summon Invoked Mechaba! Invocation’s effect was used to shuffle it back into the Deck and add Aleister the Invoker back to his hand. He passed there.

Ly drew for turn, but Freeman activated the effect of his Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall, banishing it to add Mekk-Knight Blue Sky from his Deck to his hand. Ly then had his Astrograph Sorcerer attack into Invoked Mechaba, but Freeman activated the effect of Aleister the Invoker in the damage step to have Mechaba overpower Ly’s Astrograph Sorcerer. Ly Pendulum Summoned it back to the field in Main Phase 2.

Freeman drew Magical Meltdown. Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall came back to the field in the center Main Monster Zone. Freeman activated Magical Meltdown, adding Aleister the Invoker to his hand. It was Normal Summoned, and its effect added Invocation from his Deck to his hand. He Set Invocation across from Astrograph Sorcerer then Mekk-Knight Blue Sky was Special Summoned in that column! He used its effect to add Mekk-Knight Red Moon from his Deck to his hand. He then banished Mekk-Knight Blue Sky to add Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse from his Deck to his hand, then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse to the same column as Astrograph Sorcerer. He then used Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse to move it to the right-most column, then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Red Moon to the column across from Astrograph Sorcerer and that was enough for Ly! Ly elected to concede the game and go to the second Duel.

Duel 2

Ly elected to have Freeman go first.

Freeman started with a hand of Magical Meltdown, Mind Control, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, and Invocation. He activated Magical Meltdown and its effect added Aleister the Invoker from Freeman’s Deck to his hand. He then Normal Summoned Aleister and used its effect to add another Invocation to his hand.

Ly activated Allure of Darkness, drawing 2 cards and banishing Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm from his hand. He then activated Dragon Shrine but Ly Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it. Ly then activated Harmonizing Magician and Wisdom-Eye Magician to the Pendulum Zones. Ly attempted to use Wisdom-Eye Magician’s effect but Freeman Chained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy Wisdom-Eye Magician. Ly then activated Supreme King Gate Zero and then Pendulum Summoned Wisdom-Eye Magician from the Extra Deck. The Magician attacked and destroyed Aleister the Invoker. Ly Set a card to the back row and passed.

Freeman drew a second Mind Control. He activated Invocation, and Ly Chained Cosmic Cyclone to banish Invocation. It didn’t negate Invocation, but it does prevent Freeman from using the effect in the Graveyard. Invocation resolved to allow Freeman to Fusion Summon Invoked Mechaba using Aleister the Invoker and Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit. Invoked Mechaba attacked into and destroyed Wisdom-Eye Magician.

Ly Special Summoned Kumongous, the Sticky String Kaiju to Freeman’s field Tributing Invoked Mechaba! (He placed it across from an Extra Monster Zone, which could be important against a Deck using Mekk-Knights). He then Pendulum Summoned Wisdom-Eye Magician form the Extra Deck and Purple Poison Magician from hand. He then used both monsters to Link Summon Heavymetalfoes Electrumite in the Extra Monster Zone across from Kumongous, the Sticky String Kaiju. Heavymetalfoes Electrumite’s effect kicked Astrograph Sorcerer from Ly’s Deck to his Extra Deck. He then used Heavymetalfoes Electrumite’s other effect, destroying Harmonizing Magician and adding Astrograph Sorcerer back to his hand. Astrograph Sorcerer’s effect was activated, Special Summoning itself and adding another Harmonizing Magician to his hand from his Deck. Ly then Normal Summoned Harmonizing Magician and used it with Astrograph Sorcerer to Special Summon Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom. He used the Dragon’s effect to copy Heavymetalfoes Electrumite’s effect and then used the copied effect to destroy his Supreme King Gate Zero and add back Astrograph Sorcerer, which came back to the field behind Heavymetalfoes Electrumite and let him add Harmonizing Magician from his Deck to his hand. He attacked with Astrograph Sorcerer into Kumongous, the Sticky String Kaiju then attacked with Heavymetalfoes Electrumite and Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom. The Duel was 6000 LP to 2800 LP in favor of Ly.

Freeman drew Brilliant Fusion. He activated it and sent Gem-Knight Garnet and Performage Trick Clown to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon Gem-Knight Seraphinite in Attack Position. He used Performage Trick Clown’s effect to Special Summon it. He then used Brilliant Fusion’s effect to restore Gem-Knight Seraphinite’s ATK by discarding Invocation. He then activated Invocation’s Graveyard effect to shuffle it into the Deck to add a banished Aleister the Invoker back to his hand. Aleister the Invoker was then Normal Summoned, and its effect added Invocation from his Deck to his hand! Ly activated Droll & Lock Bird after the Chain resolved, preventing further searching or drawing this turn. Freeman then activated Mind Control, taking control of Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom. He used the Dragon’s effect to copy Invoked Mechaba’s effect. He used all 4 monsters (Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom, Performage Trick Clown, Gem-Knight Seraphinite, and Aleister the Invoker) to Link Summon Saryuja Skull Dread! He couldn’t use the draw effect due to Droll & Lock Bird, but he continued and activated Invocation to Fusion Summon Invoked Mechaba using the Aleister the Invoker and Performage Trick Clown in his Graveyard as Materials. Mechaba gained 300 ATK since it was Summoned to a zone Saryuja Skull Dread was pointing to. He attacked with both monsters to clear the field.

Ly drew to 2 cards in hand. He attempted to activate Mythical Beast Master Cerberus, but Freeman used Invoked Mechaba’s effect, discarding Mind Control to negate the activation and that was it!

A brilliant use of Brilliant Fusion’s effect leads Ly to a victory in the last round of Swiss!
