Round 2 Feature Match: Roland Fang vs. Joshua Johnson
Roland Fang was the highest-ranking North American Duelist in the world last year, making it to the Top 8 of the 2017 Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME World Championship in Tokyo, Japan. Now he’s hungry for a YCS victory, and betting on his Mekk-Knight Invoked Deck to win it for him. He’s currently 1-0 in the tournament, and he’s about to face off against Joshua Johnson and his Pendulum-based Deck. Johnson doesn’t quite have the amount of Dueling experience that Fang has, but he and his Pendulum-based Deck are supported by Heavymetalfoes Electrumite from Extreme Force. That’s certain to make Johnson a worthy opponent for Fang.
Duel One
Johnson started off Duel 1 by activating Allure of Darkness to draw 2 cards and banish Harmonizing Magician from his hand.
He activated Abyss Actor – Curtain Raise in his Pendulum Zone and then used its effect to Special Summon it to his field. He sent his Timegazer Magician and Abyss Actor – Curtain Raise to his Extra Deck face-up to Link Summon Heavymetalfoes Electrumite, prompting Fang to use the effect of the PSY-Framegear Gamma in his hand! He Special Summoned it along with PSY-Frame Driver in his hand to negate the effect and destroy the Electrumite. Next, Johnson activated Mythical Beast Bashilisk in his Pendulum Zone and used its effect to destroy it and send Timegazer Magician from his Extra Deck to his Main Deck and draw 1 card. Next, Johnson banished the top 10 cards of his Deck face-down to activate Pot of Desires and draw 2 cards. Johnson activated Mythical Beast Master Cerberus in his Pendulum Zone next, and activated its effect to have it destroy itself and allow Johnson to add Mythical Beast Jackal King from his Deck to his hand. He activated it in his Pendulum Zone next, and used its effect to destroy it and Special Summon Mythical Beast Master Cerberus from his Extra Deck to his Extra Monster Zone. He Normal Summoned Purple Poison Magician next, and sent it to his Extra Deck along with Master Cerberus to Link Summon Heavymetalfoes Electrumite. He used its effect to add Astrograph Sorcerer from his Main Deck to his Extra Deck face-up. He activated Harmonizing Magician in his Pendulum Zone, and then used Electrumite’s effect to destroy it and add Astrograph Sorcerer to his hand. Johnson used his two Electrumites to Link Summon the Link 3 Zefra Metaltron next, and then fused Astrograph Sorcerer and Stargazer Magician to Summon another Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom, Linked to Zefra Metaltron. Before ending his turn, he combined his 2 copies of Supreme Dragon Starving Venom to Xyz Summon Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy!
Fang drew a card and then had Aleister the Invoker, Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall, Upstart Goblin, and Pot of Desires in his hand.
He Set Upstart Goblin across from Number 38 and then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall in the same column. Next, he Normal Summoned Aleister and used its effect to add Invocation to his hand. He activated Upstart Goblin next, giving Johnson 1000 Life Points and allowing Fang to draw PSY-Framegear Gamma. He activated Pot of Desires next, banishing the top 10 cards of his Deck face-down to draw Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring and Terraforming from his Deck. He activated Terraforming to add Magical Meltdown to his hand. He then used his Underclock Taker’s effect to reduce the ATK of Number 38 by 2900. Next, he tried to use the effect of the Invocation in his Graveyard, but Johnson used Number 38’s effect to negate it and attach it as an Xyz Material. Fang attacked Zefra Metaltron with Purgatrio to destroy it, and then attacked Number 38 with Purgatrio to destroy that too, dropping Johnson to 6000 Life Points. Underclock Taker attacked directly next, dropping him to 5000 Life Points.
Johnson activated Purple Poison Magician in his Pendulum Zone and then Pendulum Summoned Mythical Beast Jackal King. He attacked Underclock Taker with it, and used the effect of the Purple Poison Magician in his Pendulum Zone to increase his monster’s ATK by 1200. Fang returned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall to his field in the Standby Phase and then used the effect of the Invocation in his Graveyard to add an Aleister to his hand. He attacked the Jackal King to destroy it with his Purple Nightfall, and then Normal Summoned Aleister; but Johnson promptly conceded to save time.
Johnson builds an impressive first-turn field in Duel One, but Fang makes a comeback with Underclock Taker and Invoked Purgatrio!
Duel Two
Johnson started off Duel 2 by activating Abyss Actor – Curtain Raiser in his Pendulum Zone and Special Summoning it to his field. He Normal Summoned Mythical Beast Bashilisk next, and Fang discarded Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries from his hand to banish all 3 copies of Heavymetalfoes Electrumite from Johnson’s Extra Deck! Fang drew a card, entered his Battle Phase, and activated Evenly Matched! With no cards left in his hand, no Electrumites in his Extra Deck, and the ability to keep only one card on his field, Johnson conceded, completely devastated by Fang’s Evenly Matched.
Roland Fang takes an immediate victory in Duel 2 thanks to Evenly Matched and advances with a 2-0 record using his Mekk-Knight Invoked Deck!
