Round 4 Feature Match: Lorenzo Hernandez vs. Stephen Chan

February 25th, 2018

Lorenzo Hernandez made the trip here from Bakersfield, CA. He’s the only Duelist in the tournament using World Chalice, so we had to give him a Feature Match to see what he could do! His opponent is Stephen Chan, from Seattle, WA, playing a Pendulum Magician Deck. Like many Duelists, Chan is playing a suite of the new Mythical Beast monsters from Extreme Force, which can easily Special Summon Mythical Beast Master Cerberus.

Duel 1

Chan won the die roll and opted to play first. He played Chronograph Sorcerer in his Pendulum Zone and used it to Special Summon Timegazer Magician, then Normal Summoned Harmonizing Magician. He Link Summoned Heavymetalfoes Electrumite, which put Astrograph Sorcerer in the Extra Deck. He played Oafdragon Magician and Black Fang Magician, and used Oafdragon to get Harmonizing back to his hand. He Pendulum Summoned Timegazer and Chronograph from the Extra Deck, along with Purple Poison Magician and Harmonizing from his hand. Harmonizing Special Summoned another Purple Poison, giving him six monsters now. He used the first Purple Poison and Timegazer to play Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom, and had it copy Electrumite. The original Electrumite destroyed Oafdragon to get Astrograph Sorcerer in Chan’s hand, and he drew a card. He didn’t use the Astrograph’s effect. He played Foolish Burial, sending a Chronograph to the Graveyard. He used Starving Venom’s copy of Electrumite’s effect, destroying Black Fang to get Oafdragon in his hand. The destroyed Black Fang Special Summoned Chronograph from the Graveyard. He stacked both Chronographs for Norito the Moral Leader! Then, he used Electrumite and Starving Venom for Zefra Metaltron. Finally, he used Harmonizing Magician and Purple Poison to play Evilswarm Nightmare!

Hernandez had a hand of Mind Control, Foolish Burial, Archlord Kristya, Gem-Knight Lazuli, and World Legacy – “World Chalice”. He drew Raigeki. He started with Mind Control on Norito to force out its negation, then wiped the field with Raigeki! He used Foolish Burial to put Lee the World Chalice Fairy in the Graveyard, then used Lee’s effect (sending Lazuli to the Graveyard) to get Lee to his hand. He Normal Summoned it and added Beckoned by the World Chalice to his hand. Lee attacked for 100 points of damage.

Chan simply passed.

Hernandez drew another Lazuli. He Normal Summoned Beckoned by the World Chalice, and used it to play Imduk the World Chalice Dragon. He then Summoned World Legacy – “World Chalice”, by Tributing Lee. He got Lee back again by pitching Lazuli, then used World Chalice and Imduk to play Ib the World Chalice Priestess. The two Link Materials Special Summoned Lee from his hand and World Chalice Guardragon and Beckoned from the Deck. He used Ib and Guardragon to play Auram the World Chalice Blademaster, which Tributed Lee to revive Ib. He used Beckoned to play another Imduk. Imduk and Auram were upgraded into Ningirsu the World Chalice Warrior – Auram Special Summoned Beckoned; Ningirsu let him draw Effect Veiler and Mystical Shine Ball. Beckoned and Ningirsu were used to play Firewall Dragon, and he banished Guardragon to Special Summon Beckoned again. He used it to play Link Spider, then Firewall Special Summoned Archlord Kristya! His ending field was Kristya, Firewall, Ib, and Link Spider, and Chan was wide open. He attacked directly with everything, wiping out Chan’s Life Points and taking the first Duel!

Duel 2

Hernandez played first, with a hand of The Agent of Creation – Venus, Effect Veiler, Anti-Spell Fragrance, Gem-Knight Lazuli, and Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju. He played Venus and paid 1500 Life Points to Special Summon three copies of Mystical Shine Ball. He used one to play Link Spider, then another for Imduk. He used all of his monsters to play Saryuja Skull Dread, drawing Scapegoat, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Venus, and Chosen by the World Chalice. He opted to put Venus, Chosen, and Lazuli on the bottom of the Deck. He Set Scapegoat and Anti-Spell Fragrance.

In Chan’s Standby Phase, Hernandez flipped Anti-Spell Fragrance. Chan Normal Summoned Purple Poison Magician and crashed it into Saryuja Skull Dread, destroying Anti-Spell Fragrance. In Main Phase 2, Chan played Allure of Darkness and banished Black Fang Magician. He put Chronograph Sorcerer in his Pendulum Zone, and Hernandez negated its effect with Ash Blossom. He played Pendulum Call next, discarding Mythical Beast Master Cerberus, and put Purple Poison and Harmonizing Magician in his hand. He put Purple Poison in his other Pendulum Zone, then Pendulum Summoned Purple Poison from the Extra Deck and Harmonizing from the hand. Harmonizing brought the third Purple Poison to the field. He used it with Harmonizing to play Heavymetalfoes Electrumite, and it was negated by Hernandez’s Effect Veiler. Chan played another Allure of Darkness, and discarded his entire hand! It was a desperation move that didn’t pay off! Hernandez flipped Scapegoat in the End Phase, only making things worse!

Hernandez drew Lee the World Chalice Fairy. He Special Summoned it with Skull Dread, adding World Legacy – “World Chalice” to his hand. He Link Summoned with a Sheep Token and Lee, for Ib. He Tributed Ib to Normal Summon World Chalice, then used it with a Sheep Token for Auram. World Chalice’s effect Special Summoned Beckoned and Guardragon. Guardragon and a Sheep Token were used to play Proxy Dragon, then Beckoned was used to play Imduk. Lee’s effect discarded Gameciel to put it back in the hand. Hernandez used Imduk with Proxy for Ningirsu, Special Summoned Lee, and drew Brilliant Fusion and Guardragon. Lee’s effect put Beckoned in his hand. Ningirsu’s effect sent Lee and Electrumite to the Graveyard. He played Brilliant Fusion next, sending Lazuli and Archlord Kristya to the Graveyard to play Gem-Knight Seraphinite. Lazuli’s effect put Beckoned in his hand. He used Seraphinite and Ningirsu for Firewall Dragon, and Special Summoned Beckoned. He used it to play Imduk, and Firewall Special Summoned Beckoned from the hand. Firewall bounced away Purple Poison, and Hernandez moved to the Battle Phase! He sent all of his monsters to attack, taking the Duel and the Match!

Lorenzo Hernandez is the victor, with World Chalice!
