Top 32 Feature Match: Calvin Tahan vs. Nicholas Petzold

February 18th, 2018

We’re now in Top 32! From here on, it’s Single Elimination until we have a YCS winner! At table 11 we have Calvin Tahan from Washington, D.C. playing ABC and ending Swiss with a record of 9-2. He’s up against Nicholas Petzold from Austin, Texas using Metalfoes True Draco, who made it to the Top 32 with a 9-1-1 record! Who will advance to Top 32?  Let’s find out! It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Petzold won the roll and elected to go first. He started with Painful Decision, but Tahan negated it with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Petzold had a Rescue Rabbit anyway! He used its effect to Special Summon 2 copies of Metalfoes Goldriver. Next, Upstart Goblin came down to draw another card, then the 2 Goldrivers were used to Link Summon Heavymetalfoes Electrumite. Its effect put Metalfoes Volflame in the Extra Deck, then Petzold put Rescue Hamster in the Pendulum Zone and then used the effect to add the 2 Goldrivers back to his hand while Heavymetalfoes Electrumite drew him another card. A Metalfoes Goldriver hit the Pendulum Zone followed by the second one. He used one Metalfoes Goldriver effect to destroy the other one and Set Metalfoes Combination. After the Chain resolved, he activated Astrograph Sorcerer to Summon itself to add the third Metalfoes Goldriver form Deck to hand. He activated Dragonic Diagram, using the effect to destroy the Set Metalfoes Combination to add Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King to hand, and Tahan conceded right there, likely to conceal his strategy and give him an advantage in game 2.

Duel 2

Tahan elected to go first. He started with a hand of Gold Gadget, Solemn Judgment, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Torrential Tribute, and Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit. He Set Solemn Judgment, Torrential Tribute, and Gold Gadget and passed.

Petzold started off with Metalfoes Goldriver in the Pendulum Zone along with Metalfoes Volflame. He used Metalfoes Volflame’s effect but Tahan Chained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to stop it! Petzold activated Astrograph Sorcerer in a new Chain, which was Special Summoned and let him add another Metalfoes Volflame from Deck to hand. He then activated Cosmic Cyclone on Tahan’s face-down Torrential Tribute but Tahan activated Solemn Judgment to protect it. Petzold then Set Metalfoes Combination then Tributed it and the Astrograph Sorcerer for Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King! He then scaled Metalfoes Volflame, then Pendulum Summoned Metalfoes Volflame from the Extra Deck. Tahan let it go and Petzold used Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King to banish the in-Graveyard Metalfoes Combination to destroy Tahan’s Gold Gadget, which got Silver Gadget from the Deck. He attacked with both monsters, to forcing Silver to bring out another Gold, which also got destroyed.

Tahan drew B-Buster Drake, Set it and passed.

Petzold activated True Draco Heritage, then used Metalfoes Goldriver’s effect to pop it and Set another Metalfoes Spell/Trap. True Draco Heritage would have targeted the face-down Torrential Tribute for destruction, but was enough to have Tahan concede the Duel and extend the handshake.

It’s a completely one-sided affair as Petzold moves on to Top 16 with Metalfoes True Draco!
