Top 32 Feature Match: Mohammed Khan vs. Juan Andrade

February 18th, 2018

Out of over 1100 Duelists, only 32 remain! Illinois Duelist Mohammed Khan won YCS Dallas last year using SPYRALs, and he’s still playing them today despite the massive hit they took on the latest Forbidden & Limited List! His opponent is Juan Andrade, here all the way from Ecuador. Andrade is both a UDS winner and a YCS Champion, having won a UDS Invitational in Ecuador as well as YCS Buenos Aires. This will be a great match-up, featuring new forms of last format’s top decks, SPYRALs and Pendulum Magicians.

Duel 1

Khan won the die roll and chose to play first. He had a hand of SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue, Terraforming, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Monster Reborn, and Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm. He played Terraforming, adding Dragon Ravine to his hand. He used its effect, discarding Darkwurm to put Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson in the Graveyard. He Special Summoned Darkwurm and Destrudo, using both to Synchro Summon Ancient Fairy Dragon. It destroyed Ravine to give him 1000 Life Points and SPYRAL Resort in his hand. He played it to get SPYRAL Quik-Fix. Ancient Fairy Dragon’s second effect Special Summoned it, and he added SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red to his hand. He used Quik-Fix and Ancient Fairy Dragon to Link Summon Underclock Taker, then used Special Summoned Quik-Fix. He put SPYRAL GEAR – Drone in his hand this time, then used Monster Reborn to bring back Ancient Fairy Dragon! He used its effect to Special Summon Drone, looking at Andrade’s top three cards. He put them in order of Wavering Eyes, Purple Poison Magician, and Harmonizing Magician. He used Quik-Fix and Drone to play SPYRAL Double Helix, using it to get SPYRAL Sleeper. He discarded SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to get Quik-Fix back, and searched for another Big Red. He banished Rescue to get SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort, and brought back Drone with Big Red. He Xyz Summoned Sylvan Princessprite, then detached Quik-Fix for its effect. He used revived Quik-Fix yet again, adding his final Big Red to his hand. He used Quik-Fix and Princessprite to Link Summon Ib the World Chalice Priestess, pointing to Ancient Fairy Dragon and Double Helix. He used Double Helix and Underclock Taker to play Firewall Dragon, now next to Ib. He banished Double Helix, Drone, and Big Red to Special Summon SPYRAL Sleeper, and equipped it with Last Resort. In the End Phase, Resort was destroyed since he had no monsters to use for its effect.

Andrade played Foolish Burial, putting Darkwurm in the Graveyard. He Special Summoned it, adding Supreme King Gate Zero to his hand. He played Astrograph Sorcerer in his Pendulum Zone, but had its effect negated by Khan’s Ash Blossom. Andrade played Black Fang Magician in the other Pendulum Zone, and activated Allure of Darkness. He drew two and banished Gate Zero. He activated Wavering Eyes, and Khan responded with Sleeper to destroy both of Andrade’s Pendulums! Andrade was able to Special Summon Astrograph Sorcerer from his hand, and added a Black Fang Magician to his hand. He played it and a Wisdom-Eye Magician in his Pendulum Zones, and used Wisdom-Eye to put Oafdragon Magician in the Pendulum Zone. Oafdragon put a Black Fang in Andrade’s hand. He Pendulum Summoned Astrograph from the Extra Deck and Black Fang from the hand. He used all of his monsters to Link Summon Borreload Dragon! It attacked Sleeper, and Khan used Firewall Dragon to bounce Sleeper to the hand before it could get stolen. Borreload instead attacked and stole Firewall, and Firewall attacked Ib. Ib survived the battle since it was linked to Ancient Fairy Dragon.

Khan drew Upstart Goblin and used to to draw SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue. He played Big Red to get back Last Resort, then used Last Resort, Ib, and Ancient Fairy Dragon to play his own Borreload Dragon! He banished Big Red, Resort, and Last Resort to Special Summon Sleeper. Borreload attacked and stole Andrade’s Borreload. That Borreload attacked and destroyed Firewall Dragon, and Sleeper attacked directly. Khan Set Rescue to finish his turn.

Andrade drew, now with two cards in hand as well as Black Fang and Oafdragon in the Pendulum Zone. In the Standby Phase, Khan flipped Rescue, and had Sleeper destroy Rescue and Andrade’s Pendulums. Andrade played Allure of Darkness, but when he saw his two cards he conceded.

Duel 2

Andrade chose to play first this time. He played Chronograph Sorcerer in the Pendulum Zone, and used it to Special Summon Timegazer Magician. He Normal Summoned Harmonizing Magician, and used them to play Heavymetalfoes Electrumite. Its effect put Astrograph Sorcerer in the Extra Deck. He played Gate Zero and had Electrumite destroy it to get Astrograph Sorcerer back to his hand. He Special Summoned the Astrograph Sorcerer, adding a Chronograph to his hand, and Electrumite let him draw a card. He put Purple Poison Magician and Chronograph in his Pendulum Zones, and Pendulum Summoned Chronograph and Gate Zero. Using Astrograph and Gate Zero he Xyz Summoned Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon, then used that with Electrumite for Decode Talker. Absolute’s effect Special Summoned Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon. He Set two to his back row to finish.

Khan had a hand of SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort, SPYRAL Quik-Fix, SPYRAL Super Agent, Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson, Terraforming, and Monster Reborn. He played Terraforming to get Dragon Ravine and activated it, discarding Destrudo to put Darkwurm in the Graveyard. He Special Summoned it, Special Summoned Destrudo, and Andrade flipped Time Pendulumgraph! He destroyed Purple Poison and Destrudo, and then Purple Poison destroyed Darkwurm! Khan used the effect of SPYRAL Super Agent in his hand, correctly guessing that a monster was on top of Andrade’s Deck. He Special Summoned it, and Decode Talker Tributed Chronograph to negate and destroy Super Agent. Khan Normal Summoned Quik-Fix, and Andrade negated it with Vortex Dragon. Khan pressed on with Monster Reborn to get Quik-Fix back, adding Big Red to his hand. He played it, but Andrade banished it with Cosmic Cyclone! Every one of Khan’s combo attempts was shut down – Andrade had an answer for everything! With his Life Points cut in half from Destrudo, he wouldn’t survive another turn.

Duel 3

Khan played first for the final Duel. He had 2 Dragon Ravine, Soul Charge, Upstart Goblin, and Dimensional Barrier. He played Dragon Ravine first, discarding Upstart Goblin to put Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson in the Graveyard. He played his second Ravine, discarding Soul Charge to put Darkwurm in the Graveyard. He Special Summoned Darkwurm and Destrudo, and Synchro Summoned Ancient Fairy Dragon. It destroyed Ravine to get SPYRAL Resort, and he played that to get SPYRAL Quik-Fix. Ancient Fairy Dragon Special Summoned it, and he added SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red to his hand. He used Ancient Fairy Dragon and Quik-Fix to Link Summon Underclock Taker, then played Big Red to get Quik-Fix back and search out SPYRAL GEAR – Drone. He Set Dimensional Barrier and passed his turn. Resort was destroyed at the end of the turn.

Andrade moved to the Battle Phase and activated Evenly Matched! Khan responded with Dimensional Barrier to block Pendulum Summons for the rest of the turn. He banished all his cards except Quik-Fix. Andrade Set a card in his back row, then played Darkwurm in his Pendulum Zone. He used its effect to get Gate Zero, and Set a monster.

Khan drew another Dimensional Barrier. He Normal Summoned Drone, putting Andrade’s cards in the order of Gate Zero, Ash Blossom, and Chronograph. He used his SPYRALs to play SPYRAL Double Helix, and its effect Special Summoned SPYRAL Master Plan. He searched out SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue with Master Plan, and discarded Rescue to bring back Quik-Fix. That put Big Red in his hand. He used all his monsters to play Borreload Dragon! He played Big Red to revive Master Plan, and added another Rescue to his hand. Borreload Dragon attacked and stole Andrade’s Set Purple Poison Magician, and Master Plan attacked directly. He Set Dimensional Barrier and Rescue to finish his turn.

Andrade flipped Cosmic Cyclone to banish Khan’s Set Rescue. Khan flipped up Dimensional Barrier – Andrade offered the handshake!
