Top 32 Feature Match: Brenden Beckmann vs. Denny Vu
We’re now in the Top 32! It’s single elimination from here on out until we have a winner of YCS Memphis! Denny Vu is running Mekk-Knight Invoked and our Quick Question of “which Deck is winning this weekend” came up with the answer “Denny Vu’s Deck”. Well, he’s here in Top 32, so the chance is alive and well! Denny is the 31st seed playing against the 2nd seed Brenden Beckmann who we’ve featured before in Round 7. It’s Mekk-Knight Invoked versus Pendulum Magician, and only one can advance to the Top 16. It’s time to Duel!
Duel 1
Beckmann won the roll and elected to go first. He activated Abyss Actor – Curtain Raiser to the Pendulum Zone and used the effect to Special Summon it to the field. He then Normal Summoned Black Fang Magician and used both monsters to Link Summon Heavymetalfoes Electrumite and tried to use the effect to send a monster to the Extra Deck but Vu chained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy the Link Monster. Beckmann resolved the effect by sending Xiangke Magician from the Deck to the Extra Deck. Beckmann continued by activating Black Fang Magician and Purple Poison Magician in the Pendulum Zones. Beckmann then Pendulum Summoned Xiangke Magician from the Extra Deck and Mythical Beast Jackal King from his hand.
Vu drew Pot of Desires, adding it to his hand of Effect Veiler, Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall, Mind Control and Invocation. He Set Mind Control across from Xiangke Magician then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall to that column. He then activated Pot of Desires, banishing 10 cards off the top of his Deck to draw Aleister the Invoker and Instant Fusion. He then flipped-up the Set Mind Control to take control of Mythical Beast Jackal King with its 4 Spell Counters. Vu then Normal Summoned Aleister the Invoker and used its effect to add Invocation from his Deck to his hand. Next, he activated Instant Fusion, paying 1000 LP to Special Summon Thousand-Eyes Restrict from his Extra Deck. He used the effect to equip Beckmann’s Xiangke Magician to Thousand-Eyes Restrict. He then used Thousand-Eyes Restrict and Mythical Beast Jackal King to Link Summon Underclock Taker. He then used Underclock Taker and Aleister the Invoker to Link Summon Decode Talker. Next, Invocation was activated, banishing Aleister the Invoker from his Graveyard and Beckmann’s Heavymetalfoes Electrumite from his Graveyard to Fusion Summon Invoked Purgatrio, then Vu used Aleister the Invoker’s effect in hand, discarding it to give Purgatrio another 1000 ATK. When Vu activated the second Invocation, Beckmann conceded right there. Vu is one win away from getting to Top 16!
Duel 2
Beckmann elected to go first. He started with Foolish Burial, sending Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm to the Graveyard. Its effect was used to Special Summon itself and its other effect added Supreme King Gate Zero from his Deck to his hand. Next, Beckmann Normal Summoned Purple Poison Magician and the 2 monsters were used to Link Summon Heavymetalfoes Electrumite. He activated the effect to send a monster to the Extra Deck but Vu once again chained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy Heavymetalfoes Electrumite. Beckmann sent Astrograph Sorcerer from the Deck to the Extra Deck to resolve the effect. Beckmann then activated Stargazer Magician and Harmonizing Magician as Pendulum Spells, then Pendulum Summoned Supreme King Gate Zero from his hand and Astrograph Sorcerer from the Extra Deck, using both monsters to Link Summon another Heavymetalfoes Electrumite whose effect sent Mythical Beast Master Cerberus to the Extra Deck. Heavymetalfoes Electrumite’s effect then destroyed Harmonizing Magician and added Astrograph Sorcerer back from the Extra Deck to his hand, with Astrograph Sorcerer’s effect Special Summoning itself and adding another Harmonizing Magician from his Deck to his hand and drawing a card from Heavymetalfoes Electrumite’s other effect.
Vu drew Terraforming to add to his hand of Aleister the Invoker, Mind Control, Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall and Terraforming. He activated one of the Terraformings to add Magical Meltdown to his hand. Next, Vu activated Magical Meltdown to add Aleister the Invoker from his Deck to his hand. Vu Normal Summoned Aleister the Invoker but Beckmann activated Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate the effect that would have added Invocation to Vu’s hand. He Set Mind Control across from Stargazer Magician then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall to that column. He activated Purple’s effect, banishing it to add Mekk-Knight Blue Sky from his Deck to his hand. Mekk-Knight Blue Sky was then Special Summoned to that column and he used its effect to add Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse from his Deck to his hand. He then Set Terraforming across from Astrograph Sorcerer then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse to that column. Vu then activated the Set Mind Control to steal Beckmann’s Astrograph Sorcerer. Mekk-Knight Blue Sky attacked and destroyed Beckmann’s Heavymetalfoes Electrumite and the rest of Vu’s monsters attacked directly leaving Beckmann at 4400 LP. In Main Phase 2, Vu activated the Set Terraforming to add Magical Meltdown from his Deck to his hand. He used all 4 monsters to Link Summon Saryuja Skull Dread! Vu used the effect to draw 4 cards and put 3 on the bottom of the Deck. His hand is now Aleister the Invoker, Spellbook of Knowledge and Invocation. He then used Saryuja Skull Dread’s effect to Special Summon Aleister then Vu activated Spellbook of Knowledge, sending Aleister to the Graveyard to draw 2 cards! Pot of Desires came down next, with Vu banishing the top 10 cards to draw 2 more. He then activated Invocation, banishing Aleister and Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit from his Graveyard to Fusion Summon Invoked Mechaba. Saryuja Skull Dread’s effect gave Mechaba another 300 ATK and DEF. Invocation’s Graveyard effect put the banished Aleister the Invoker back to his hand and Invocation back to his Deck. Vu passed with 4 cards in hand: Effect Veiler, Aleister the Invoker, Terraforming and Mekk-Knight Blue Sky.
Beckmann activated Timegazer Magician as a Pendulum Spell and Vu used Invoked Mechaba’s effect to negate and banish Timegazer Magician. Vu then activated Harmonizing Magician into the Pendulum Zone, then Pendulum Summoned Purple Poison Magician and Astrograph Sorcerer from the Extra Deck and another Astrograph Sorcerer from his hand (Saryuja’s up arrow gave Beckmann an extra place to Pendulum Summon into from the Extra Deck). Astrograph Sorcerer gained another 300 ATK and DEF from Vu’s Saryuja Skull Dread’s effect. Beckmann used his Purple Poison Magician and an Astrograph Sorcerer to Link Summon Heavymetalfoes Electrumite. He used the effect to try and destroy Harmonizing Magician but Vu chained Effect Veiler to negate the effect. Beckmann’s Astrograph Sorcerer attacked into Vu’s Invoked Mechaba but Vu activated Aleister the Invoker’s effect from his hand to give Mechaba another 1000 ATK points.
Vu drew Spellbook of Knowledge. Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall came back to the field during the Standby Phase. Vu Set Spellbook of Knowledge across from Beckmann’s Stargazer Magician and Vu Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Blue Sky to that column and Beckmann extended the handshake!
