North America WCQ Round 1 Feature Match: Dustin Allen Ogden vs. Louis LaQuerre

June 30th, 2018

Welcome to the North America World Championship Qualifier! We have 1793 Duelists vying for the title of 2018 North America Champion and trying to punch their ticket to the 2018 Yu-Gi-Oh TRADING CARD GAME World Championship! Our Round 1 Feature Match is Dustin Allen Odgen from Tulsa, Oklahoma who qualified for the tournament by placing 1st in Last Chance Qualifiers #34 with a Deck featuring Dinosaurs – which we haven’t seen a ton of since the last Forbidden and Limited List update that sent That Grass Looks Greener onto the Forbidden List – with Mekk-Knights, which we usually see paired with Invoked monsters. This is an interesting twist to a tried and tested strategy which gave him 4 wins yesterday! His opponent is Louis LaQuerre from Quebec who got his invite from placing in 9th place at a Quebec Regional Qualifier. He has Paleozoic Frogs with him, another Deck that has proven itself as a reliable strategy. This is arguably the most important tournament of the year for most of the Duelists in attendance, and we’re ready to kick things off! It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Ogden won the roll and elected to go second.

LaQuerre started off with 3 Set cards to the back and passed.

Ogden had a hand of Raigeki, Ultimate Conductor Tyranno, Mekk-Knight Blue Sky, Fossil Dig, Trade-In and World Legacy’s Memory. He Set a card to the center back row and LaQuerre chained the Set across from it, Paleozoic Olenoides, destroying Fossil Dig. Ogden then Set one across from another Set then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Blue Sky to that column. Ogden used Blue’s effect to add Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall from his Deck to his hand. He then Set a card across from the other Set and Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall to his hand. He used Purple’s effect to banish Blue to add Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse from his Deck to his hand. He then activated the Set Trade-In, discarding Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse to draw another Dogoran, the Mad Flame Kaiju and Mekk-Knight Blue Sky. He attacked with Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall but LaQuerre activated Paleozoic Dinomischus to banish Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall.

LaQuerre drew for turn, activated Reckless Greed and Special Summoned Paleozoic Olenoides form the Graveyard, drawing 2 cards and getting a monster to the field. He Normal Summoned Dupe Frog. Ogden activated the Set World Legacy’s Memory to Special Summon Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall from the Graveyard in face-up Defense Position. LaQuerre used both monsters to Xyz Summon Toadally Awesome and Ogden activated Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall’s effect, banishing it to add Mekk-Knight Blue Sky from his Deck to his hand. LaQuerre had Toadally Awesome attack directly, leaving Ogden at 5800 LP. LaQuerre Set 2 cards to the back and passed.

Ogden drew Trade-In. In the Standby Phase, LaQuerre detached a material from Toadally Awesome to Special Summon Dupe Frog from the Deck in Defense Position. Ogden then brought back both Mekk-Knight Blue Sky and Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall from the previously resolved effects. Ogden then Special Summoned Dogoran to LaQuerre’s side of the field by Tributing LaQuerre’s Toadally Awesome. LaQuerre used Toadally Awesome’s effect to add the previously discarded Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju from his Graveyard back to his hand. Ogden then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Blue Sky across from Dogoran and used Blue’s effect to add Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall and Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse from his Deck to his hand. Ogden then used Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall’s effect, banishing Mekk-Knight Blue Sky to add Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse from his Deck to his hand. He Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse across from Dogoron and used Indigo’s effect to move itself one column over, then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall to an empty zone. LaQuerre then activated Paleozoic Olenoides’s to destroy Ogden’s Set Raigeki. Ogden activated Fossil Dig from his hand to add Souleating Oviraptor from his Deck to his hand. He then Normal Summoned Souleating Oviraptor to the last open zone to send Overtex Qoatus from his Deck to his hand.

Overtex Qoatus’ effect added Double Evolution Pill from his Deck to his hand. He used Souleating Oviraptor and Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall to Link Summon Knightmare Phoenix, using its effect, discarding Mekk-Knight Blue Sky to destroy LaQuerre’s last Set which was Chained: Reckless Greed. He also Special Summoned another Olenoides from the Graveyard. He then banished Overtex Qoatus and Souleating Oviraptor to Special Summon Ultimate Conductor Tyranno. He used Ultimate Conductor Tyranno to attack all of LaQuerre’s monsters, sending all of LaQuerre’s monsters to the Graveyard, inflicting lots of burn damage and the rest of Ogden monsters attacked directly to wipe out the rest of LaQuerre’s LP!

Duel 2

LaQuerre elected to go first. He started off by Normal Summoning Swap Frog using its effect to send Ronintoadin from his Deck to his hand. He bounced it back to his hand and discarded a Dupe Frog to Special Summon Swap Frog, using its effect again to send another Ronintoadin from the Deck to his hand. He then Special Summoned Ronintoadin by banishing Dupe Frog then used both monsters to Xyz Summon Toadally Awesome. He activated Pot of Desires, banishing the top 10 cards to draw 2 more. He Set 3 cards (none of them behind Toadally Awesome) and passed.

Ogden drew for turn. LaQuerre activated Toadally Awesome but Ogden chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it. Ogden then activated Foolish Burial but LaQuerre chained Imperial Order to negate the Spell. Ogden Set a card across from Toadally Awesome then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall from his hand across from Toadally Awesome. Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall attacked Toadally Awesome but LaQuerre chained Paleozoic Dinomischus and prompting Ogden to chain Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall’s effect, banishing it to add Mekk-Knight Yellow Star from his Deck to his hand. Before leaving the Battle Phase, LaQuerre activated Mind Crush declaring Mekk-Knight Yellow Star and also Special Summoned a Paleozoic from his Graveyard. In the Main Phase 2, Ogden Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Blue Sky and used the effect to search for a Mekk-Knightbut LaQuerre negated it with Toadally Awesome discarding a Swap Frog in his hand, setting Mekk-Knight Blue Sky to his side of the field.

LaQuerre lost 700 LP due to Imperial Order. Toadally Awesome’s effect let LaQuerre Special Summon Dupe Frog from his Deck. In the Main Phase LaQuerre Special Summoned Ronintoadin from the Graveyard and used Toadally Awesome and Ronintoadin to Link Summon Mistar Boy. He then Normal Summoned Swap Frog and used the effect to send another Dupe Frog from his Deck to the Graveyard. Ronintoadin hopped out of the Graveyard again and LaQuerre sent it and a Dupe Frog to Link Summon another Mistar Boy. He then used Swap Frog and the Paleozoic he Summoned last turn to Special Summon another Toadally Awesome. That was exactly 8000 points worth of ATK and it was enough to send this match to a third and final Duel!

Duel 3

Ogden elected to go first. He started by giving his opponent a Grinder Golem and giving himself 2 Grinder Tokens! He used one token to Link Summon Linkuriboh and the other one to Link Summon Link Spider. He then used both monsters to Link Summon Akashic Magician, using the Spellcaster’s effect to bring Grinder Golem back his hand and Summoning it again! Then he used Linkuriboh’s effect, Tributing a Grinder Token to Special Summon itself from the Graveyard. Ogden then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Blue Sky across from Akashic Magician and Grinder Golem! He used Blue’s effect to add Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall from the Deck to his hand. All 4 monsters went to the Graveyard to Link Summon Saryuja Skull Dread! Its effect let Ogden draw 4 cards and put 3 cards from his hand on the bottom of his Deck. From there, he activated Trade-In, discarding Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall to draw 2 more cards, then he used Saryuja Skull Dread’s effect to Special Summon Souleating Oviraptor from his hand, sending Overtex Qoatus with Souleating Oviraptor’s effect. Overtex Qoatus’s effect let Ogden add Double Evolution Pill from his Deck to his hand. Ogden then activated Monster Reborn, Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall from the Graveyard. He then banished Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall for its own effect, adding Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse from his Deck to his hand. It was discarded for Trade-In, getting Ogden another 2 cards. He Set Twin Twisters and World Legacy’s Secret and passed.

LaQuerre switched Grinder Golem to Attack Position. He attacked and destroyed Ogden’s Saryuja Skull Dread. He Set 5 cards to the back and passed. In the End Phase, Ogden activated World Legacy’s Secrets to Special Summon Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse from the Graveyard. (World Legacy’s Secrets will also negate any of LaQuerre’s activated monster effects if a Mekk-Knight is in the same column as that monster).

Ogden tried to move into the Main Phase but Ogden activated Anti-Spell Fragrance. Ogden chained Twin Twisters and LaQuerre chained Paleozoic Olenoides to destroy World Legacy’s Secret and LaQuerre chained Gozen Match. Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall came back to the field but was sent to the Graveyard due to Gozen Match’s effect. Ogden activated Fossil Dig, adding Souleating Oviraptor from his Deck to his hand. He Normal Summoned Souleating Oviraptor and used its effect to add Ultimate Conductor Tyranno from his Deck to his hand. He sent both monsters to the Graveyard to Link Summon Underclock Taker. He then used Double Evolution Pill, banishing Akashic Magician and Souleating Oviraptor to Special Summon Overtex Qoatus from his Deck. He then used Underclock Taker’s effect but LaQuerre chained Lost Wind targeting Underclock Taker, prompting Ogden to use Overtex Qoatus’s effect to negate Lost Wind, destroying Ultimate Conductor Tyranno from his hand. Underclock Taker attacked the weakened Grinder Golem and Overtex Qoatus attacked directly.

LaQuerre activated Reckless Greed but Ogden chained Overtex Qoatus destroying itself to negate the trap. LaQuerre Set 2 to the backrow and passed.

Ogden drew another Overtex Qoatus. He attacked directly with Underclock Taker.

LaQuerre activated Paleozoic Olenoides to destroy his own Gozen Match and Special Summoned the first Olenoides from the Graveyard. He then activated the last Set card, Gozen Match and Special Summoned the most recent Olenoides and Xyz Summoned Toadally Awesome. At this point time was called. Ogden was up in Life Points and LaQuerre couldn’t get the lead in the Main Phase.

Dustin Ogden starts off the WCQ with a win!
