North America WCQ Round 2 Feature Match: Devon Filos vs. Matthew Vanden Heuvel

June 30th, 2018

Devon Filos from Los Angeles, California is Dueling against Matthew Vanden Heuvel from Toronto, Canada in this Round 2 Feature Match! Both Duelists are currently 1-0 in the tournament, and Filos is using a True Draco Deck. True Dracos are easier to build than ever before now that Dragonic Diagram is available in Battles of Legend: Relentless Revenge, but do True Dracos have what it takes to win the North America WCQ? Vanden Heuvel is using a Gouki Deck that features Living Fossil from Battles of Legend: Relentless Revenge, to be used in conjunction with Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights.

Duel One

Vanden Heuvel started off Duel 1 by Special Summoning Junk Forward to the field.

He activated Instant Fusion next, giving up 1000 Life Points to Special Summon Dragoness the Wicked Knight. He combined his 2 monsters to Xyz Summon M-X-Saber Invoker and then used its effect to Special Summon Gouki Suprex from his Deck. He combined both monsters to Link Summon Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights and then used Suprex’s to search for Gouki Headbatt and Isolde’s effect to search for Necro Gardna. He then used Isolde’s effect to send Living Fossil from his Deck to his Graveyard and Special Summon Gouki Octostretch. He Normal Summoned Gouki Twistcobra next. He combined both monsters to Link Summon Knightmare Goblin and added Gouki Re-Match and Gouki Riscorpio to his hand. He used Re-Match to Special Summon Octostretch and Twistcobra, and then combined both with Isolde to Link Summon Firewall Dragon. He sent his Goblin to the Graveyard to Link Summon Knightmare Mermaid, and then Special Summoned Riscorpio with Firewall’s effect. He Special Summoned Knightmare Corruptor Iblee to his field by discarding a card with Knightmare Mermaid’s effect, and he drew a card with the Mermaid’s effect. He combined Iblee with Riscorpio to Link Summon Goblin, and then used Firewall’s effect, Goblin’s effect, and Riscorpio’s effect to discard Necro Gardna, draw a card, gain a Summon, and add Twistcobra to his hand. He Special Summoned Gouki Headbatt to his field and then used Firewall’s effect to add an Octostretch and Iblee from his Graveyard to his hand. He then Normal Summoned Iblee and used its effect to Special Summon Knightmare Goblin from his Graveyard. He Link Summoned Underclock Taker next, Special Summoned Iblee to Filos’s field, and added a Suprex to his hand. He Special Summoned Twistcobra and after a couple of Link Summons and Special Summons, he managed to Extra Link with Tri-Gate Wizard co-linked to 3 monsters!

Filos opened up with Dragonic Diagram, Terraforming, Anti-Spell Fragrance, Imperial Order, Ignis Heat, the True Dracowarrior, and Majesty Maiden, the True Dracocaster. Faced with Vanden Heuvel’s daunting field, he conceded rather than revealing what type of Deck he was using.

Duel Two

Filos opened up Duel 2 with Shared Ride, Terraforming, Metaltron XII, the True Dracombatant, Disciples of the True Dracophoenix, and Ignis Heat.

He activated Terraforming to add Dragonic Diagram to his hand and then played the Diagram. He used its effect to destroy Metaltron XII from his hand and get True King’s Return from his Deck. He Set Disciples and then Tributed it for Ignis Heat. He Set Shared Ride and Return before passing.

Vanden Heuvel Special Summoned Junk Forward and then Normal Summoned Marauding Captain. He used its effect to Special Summon Gouki Twistcobra to his field, and when Filos tried to use Ignis Heat’s effect to search for a card, Vanden Heuvel negated its effect with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Next, Vanden Heuvel combined Junk Forward with Marauding Captain to Xyz Summon M-X-Saber Invoker, and then used its effect to Special Summon Suprex. He combined both monsters to Link Summon Isolde, and then used its effect and the effect of Suprex in Chain. Filos Chained Shared Ride as Chain Link 3. Vanden Heuvel added 2 cards from his Deck to his hand and then Special Summoned Octostretch, allowing Filos to draw 2 cards. Next, Vanden Heuvel Link Summoned Knightmare Goblin by combining 2 more Goukis, gaining 2 more searches and allowing Filos to draw 2 more cards thanks to Shared Ride. He activated Gouki Re-Match to Special Summon 2 Goukis from the Graveyard next, and then Special Summoned Headbatt. He kept Link Summoning monsters at extraordinary speed! He eventually Link Summoned Knightmare Unicorn and used its effect to return Filos’s face-down True King’s Return to Deck. Filos tried using its effect to Special Summon a monster from his Graveyard, but lost out to Vanden Heuvel’s Called by the Grave.  Vanden Heuvel continued a massive number of Special Summons and Link Summons, with Deck-searching abilities that were completely uninhibited by Filos’s Shared Ride. He used an Underclock Taker that he Link Summoned to reduce the ATK of Ignis Heat by 2500 and continued Special Summoning monsters from his hand and Link Summoning monsters from his Extra Deck until he had Extra Linked! He entered his Battle Phase and wiped out Filos’s Life Points in a single turn! The many cards in Filos’s hand were of no help, since he was unable to take another turn.

Matthew Vanden Heuvel takes a quick victory in Round 2 to advance 2-0 with his Gouki Deck!
