Round 3: Destin Ari Kaspi vs. Jose Carlos Marzan Figueroa

Welcome to Round 3! We’re at Table 94 with Destin Ari Kaspi from Washington State who is currently 2-0 with Trickstar Mekk-Knight! This is another combination of Mekk-Knights with something that isn’t Invoked. We saw Dustin Ogden take the win in Round 1 with Dinosaur Mekk-Knight, and in this round we’re seeing this Mekk-Knight variant go up against Jose Carlos Marzan Figueros from Puerto Rico, playing with a very similar build featuring Trickstars and some Mekk-Knights but also has Sky Strikers. It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Kaspi won the roll and elected to go first. He started with a hand of Trickstar Reincarnation, Trickstar Light Stage, Trickstar Lycoris, Terraforming and Gozen Match. He started with Trickstar Light Stage, using its effect to add Trickstar Candina from his Deck to his hand. He Normal Summoned Candina and used her effect to add a second copy of Trickstar Lycoris from his Deck to his hand. He then activated Terraforming to add another Trickstar Light Stage which was activated over the first one to add the third Trickstar Lycoris from his Deck to his hand. He Set Trickstar Reincarnation and Gozen Match and passed.

Marzan Figueroa drew for turn. He Set a card to the back and activated his own Trickstar Light Stage and Kaspi chained all 3 of his Lycoris’s effects! Candina bounced back to the hand and all three Lycoris hit the field. Marzan Figueroa added Trickstar Candina from his Deck to his hand. Kaspi attempted to use Trickstar Reincarnation to have Marzan Figueroa banish his hand but Marzan Figueroa negated it with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Marzan Figueroa then activated Sky Striker Maneuver – Afterburners! to destroy one of Kaspi’s Lycoris. Marzan Figueroa then used his Trickstar Light Stage to freeze Kaspi’s Set Gozen Match. Marzan Figueroa’s Trickstar Candina destroyed another of Kaspi’s Trickstar Lycoris and then Marzan Figueroa tagged in a Trickstar Lycoris to destroy Kaspi’s last Trickstar Lycoris. In the End Phase, Kaspi activated Gozen Match.

Kaspi drew Droll & Lock Bird for turn. He Normal Summoned Candina but her effect was negated by Marzan Figueroa’s Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Trickstar Candina attacked over Marzan Figueroa’s Trickstar Lycoris dropping Marzan Figueroa to 5600 LP. In the End Phase, Trickstar Light Stage’s effect forced Marzan Figueroa to send Scapegoat to the Graveyard.

Marzan Figueroa Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina and used her effect to add Trickstar Reincarnation from his Deck to his hand. He crashed his Candina into Kaspi’s, destroying both in battle. In Main Phase 2, Marzan Figueroa activated Terraforming to add Trickstar Light Stage but Kaspi activated Droll & Lock Bird to stop further searching. He passed.

Kaspi drew for turn and Marzan Figueroa activated Trickstar Reincarnation to banish PSY-Framegear Gamma and draw Scapegoat. He Set it and passed.

Marzan Figueroa froze the face-down Scapegoat with Trickstar Light Stage’s effect, then he Normal Summoned Trickstar Lilybell. He played another Trickstar Light Stage over the first one, searching for Trickstar Lycoris to add to his hand. He then activated the new Trickstar Light Stage effect to freeze Kaspi’s Scapegoat but he chained it to Special Summon 4 Sheep Tokens. Trickstar Lilybell attacked directly, inflicting 1000 damage and adding a Trickstar Lycoris from his Graveyard back to his hand. Both Trickstar Lycoris’s effects targeted Lilybell, the two Lycois hit the field and Lilybell’s effect Special Summoned her back to the field from Marzan Figueroa’s hand.  The two Lycoris destroyed 2 of the Sheep Tokens and while Lilybell attacked directly.

Kaspi used his Trickstar Light Stage to freeze Marzan Figueroa’s only Set card. He used a Sheep Token to Link Summon Link Spider, followed by using the last Sheep Token for another Link Spider. (He considered Link Summoning a Knightmare Link Monster but didn’t meet the requirements.)  Kaspi had one of the Spiders attack and destroy Trickstar Lilybell. In the End Phase, Marzan Figueroa sent Sky Striker Mecha – Widow Anchor to the Graveyard.

Marzan Figueroa Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina and he used her effect to add Trickstar Lycoris from his Deck to his hand. He then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse across from both of Kaspi’s Link Spiders. That was enough ATK points to force a concession and we’re moving on to the second Duel.

Duel 2

Kaspi elected to go “always second”. Marzan Figueroa activated Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! to add Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones to his hand prompting Kaspi to activate Droll & Lock Bird to prevent further searching but Marzan Figueroa chained Called by the Grave to negate it and banish Droll & Lock Bird from Kaspi’s Graveyard. Marzan Figueroa then activated Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones to Special Summon a Sky Striker Ace Token which was used to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Kagari whose effect let him add back Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! from the Graveyard. He then activated Trickstar Light Stage to add Trickstar Candina which was Normal Summoned to add Trickstar Lilybell to his hand which was Special Summed with her own effect. Trickstar Candina, Trickstar Lilybell, Sky Striker Ace – Kagari and the Token were used to Link Summon Saryuja Skull Dread! Marzan Figueroa used the effect to draw 4 cards and bottom Deck 3 cards. He then used Terraforming to add Trickstar Light Stage which was activated to add Trickstar Lycoris. Marzan Figueroa then activated Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! to add another Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones from his Deck to his hand and draw a card. He Set 2 cards to the back, then used Saryuja Skull Dread’s effect to Special Summon Trickstar Lycoris from his hand and have it gain 300 ATK and DEF.

Marzan Figueroa drew for turn. He Set a card across from Saryuja Skull Dread then activated Trickstar Light Stage whose effect let Kaspi add Trickstar Candina from his Deck to his hand, taking 400 damage from Marzan Figueroa’s Trickstar Lycoris. He then Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina and used the effect to add Trickstar Lilybell, taking another 400 damage. Kaspi activated Lilybell’s effect but Marzan Figueroa chained Trickstar Reincarnation to banish 4 cards and draw 4 more, taking another 1000 damage with Marzan Figueroa taking 400 damage from Kaspi’s Trickstar Candina. Kaspi then used his Trickstar Light Stage to freeze Marzan Figueroa’s remaining Set card. Kaspi then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall in front of Marzan Figueroa’s Saryuja Skull Dread, whose effect gave Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall another 300 ATK and DEF. Kaspi’s Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall attacked and destroyed Marzan Figueroa’s Trickstar Lycoris, then Kaspi used Purple’s effect, banishing itself to add Mekk-Knight Blue Sky from his Deck to his hand. In Main Phase 2, Kaspi Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Blue Sky across from Saryuja Skull Dread whose effect let Kaspi add Mekk-Knight Yellow Star from his Deck to his hand. He used both Trickstar Candina and Mekk-Knight Blue Sky to Link Summon Knightmare Goblin in front of Saryuja Skull Dread. He used the effect, discarding Waking the Dragon, giving him an additional Normal Summon which he used on Trickstar Candina whose effect let him add Trickstar Lycoris from his Deck to his hand. Kaspi then used Knightmare Goblin and Trickstar Candina to Link Summon Knightmare Phoenix whose effect let him discard Trickstar Lycoris to destroy Marzan Figueroa’s Trickstar Light Stage and draw another Waking the Dragon. He then Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Yellow Star in front of Marzan Figueroa’s frozen Set card and used Yellow’s effect to banish a Mekk-Knight Blue Sky from his Graveyard to destroy the Set Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones. He Set 2 copies of Waking the Dragon and passed.

Marzan Figueroa drew to 2 cards in hand. Saryuja Skull Dread attacked into Knightmare Phoenix and inflicted 600 damage but Phoenix stayed on the field because it was co-linked to Saryuja Skull Dread. Marzan Figueroa then used the in-grave Trickstar Reincarnation to Special Summon a Trickstar Lycoris from his Graveyard. He used both Saryuja Skull Dread and Trickstar Lycoris to Link Summon his own Knightmare Phoenix and used the effect, discarding Droll & Lock Bird to destroy one of the Set Waking the Dragons whose effect let Kaspi Special Summon Raidraptor – Ultimate Falcon from the Extra Deck! Marzan Figueroa didn’t have an answer to a 3500 ATK monster that was unaffected by card effects so we’re off to the third and final Duel!

Duel 3

Marzan Figueroa elected to go first. Kaspi started off with PSY-Framegear Gamma, Heavy Storm Duster, Trickstar Reincarnation, Mind Crush and Trickstar Lycoris. Marzan Figueroa activated Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones to Special Summon a Token which was used to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Kagari whose effect picked Hornet Drones back up from the Graveyard. He then Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina whose effect let him add Trickstar Reincarnation to his hand. Marzan Figueroa then sent Sky Striker Ace – Kagari to the Graveyard to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Shizuku . He Set 3 cards to the back and in the End Phase he used Sky Striker Ace – Shizuku’s effect to add Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! from his Deck to his hand.

Kaspi drew Trickstar Light Stage for turn. He Set 2 cards to his backrow then activated Trickstar Light Stage, adding his own Trickstar Candina and taking 200 damage. Marzan Figueroa activated Trickstar Reincarnation and chained Droll & Lock Bird but Kaspi chained PSY-Framegear Gamma to negate Droll & Lock Bird. PSY-Framegear Gamma Summoned itself and a PSY-Frame Driver while Trickstar Reincarnation banished 3 cards and forced Kaspi to draw 3 more. He then activated Terraforming from his hand, adding another Trickstar Light Stage which was activated to add Trickstar Candina who was Normal Summoned and used to add Trickstar Lycoris. In the Battle Phase, Driver attacked and destroyed Marzan Figueroa’s Trickstar Candina, then Kaspi’s Trickstar Candina attacked and destroyed Marzan Figueroas Sky Striker Ace – Shizuku while PSY-Framegear Gamma attacked directly. Still in the Battle Phase, Kaspi used Trickstar Lycoris to bounce Trickstar Candina back to his hand and Special Summon itself. Marzan Figueroa activate Scapegoat to block the attack. Kaspi then used PSY-Frame Driver to Link Summon Link Spider then used the other 2 monsters to Link Summon Knightmare Cerberus. He used the effect to destroy Marzan Figueroa’s Set Scapegoat. He then used Link Spider and Knightmare Cerberus to Link Summon Knightmare Unicorn and used the effect to send a Set Spell/Trap to the Deck.

Marzan Figueroa drew for turn and Kaspi used Mind Crush to force Marzan Figueroa to discard two copies of Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage!! The other card in his hand was Heavy Storm Duster. Marzan Figueroa used a Sheep Token to Link Summon Link Spider, then used a Trickstar Reincarnation from his Graveyard to Special Summon Trickstar Candina. He used both monsters to Link Summon Knightmare Phoenix whose effect tried to destroy Kaspi’s Set Heavy Storm Duster but Kaspi chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate Phoenix’s effect (since it was co-linked and would draw). Marzan Figueroa then used Link Spider and Knightmare Phoenix to Link Summon Topologic Trisbaena. It attacked over Kaspi’s Knightmare Unicorn.

Kaspi Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina whose effect let him add Trickstar Lilybell from his Deck to his hand. At this point time was called and Kaspi was up in LP, 7100 to 5800.

Kaspi moves on with a 3-0 record!
