Round 2 Feature Match: Daniel Ryan McGee vs. Nathan Russel Kerr

June 2nd, 2018

Welcome to Round 2! Daniel Ryan McGee is from Lehighton, Pennsylvania and his Deck is a Dinosaur Deck designed to go second.  His Deck has the typical Dinosaur cards but also includes an array of Kaijus and Interrupted Kaiju Slumber, plus other cards that work to reverse an established field. His opponent, Nathan Russel Kerr from Mechanicsburgh, Pennsylvania has with him a Paleozoic Deck! We’ve seen this Deck before at previous YCS events and it aims to restrict the opponent’s actions with Toadally Awesome. Both Decks are reactive strategies, so this Match may take a while. It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Kerr won the roll and elected to go first. He started off with 5 Set cards and passed.

McGee’s hand was Droll & Lock Bird, Souleating Oviraptor, Overtex Qoatus, Dark Grepher, and Double Evolution Pill. He drew Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit for turn. He discarded Overtex Qoatus to Special Summon Dark Grepher! Overtex Qoatus’s effect activated and Kerr Chained Paleozoic Canadia to turn Dark Grepher face-down. Overtex Qoatus’s effect let McGee add another Double Evolution Pill from his Deck to his hand. McGee then Normal Summoned Souleating Oviraptor and activated its effect; but Kerr Chained another Paleozoic Canadia and Chained the in-Graveyard Canadia to Special Summon it as a 1200 ATK monster in Defense Position. McGee added Giant Rex to his hand with Souleating Oviraptor’s effect. McGee then activated Double Evolution Pill, banishing Giant Rex and Droll & Lock Bird from his hand to Special Summon Ultimate Conductor Tyranno from his Deck. Because it was banished, Giant Rex was Special Summoned by its own effect. Giant Rex declared an attack on Canadia, but Kerr activated Storming Mirror Force to bounce Ultimate Conductor Tyranno and Giant Rex to McGee’s hand, and Kerr Special Summoned the second Canadia from the Graveyard.

Kerr Set the new draw, used the 2 Canadia to Xyz Summon Toadally Awesome and used it to attack McGee’s Set Souleating Oviraptor.

McGee drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Kerr activated Toadally Awesome’s effect to Special Summon a Frog from the Deck, but McGee Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate the effect. McGee then Normal Summoned Giant Rex and Flip Summoned Dark Grepher. Then he used both monsters to Xyz Summon Diamond Dire Wolf! He tried to use the effect to destroy it and Toadally Awesome but Kerr used Toadally Awesome’s effect, sending it to the Graveyard to negate Diamond Dire Wolf’s effect and Set it to his own field. McGee then activated Double Evolution Pill, banishing Giant Rex and Dark Grepher from his Graveyard to Special Summon Overtex Qoatus from his Deck! Giant Rex hopped back to the field from the banished area. After the Chain resolved, Kerr activated Mistake and then Chained the in-Graveyard Canadia. McGee then banished 2 Dinos to Special Summon Ultimate Conductor Tyranno from his hand. In the Battle Phase, Ultimate Conductor Tyranno attacked and destroyed the face-down Diamond Dire Wolf, then attacked the Canadia. McGee activated Mirror Force, forcing McGee to Chain Overtex Qoatus’s  effect, destroying itself to negate Mirror Force(Overtex Qoatus’s effect couldn’t add a Double Evolution Pill from his Deck to his hand due to Mistake.)  The attack continued and Ultimate Conductor Tyranno destroyed Paleozoic Canadia.

Kerr drew, then activated Reckless Greed and Chained Canadia to have it Special Summon itself. He Set a card, then activated Pot of Desires, banishing the top 10 cards o[f his Deck to draw 2 more. With 3 cards in hand, Kerr Normal Summoned Dupe Frog. McGee activated Ultimate Conductor Tyranno’s effect; but Kerr Chained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy Ultimate Conductor Tyranno. The effect resolved and McGee destroyed the on-field Giant Rex to turn Dupe Frog face-down. (Canadia stayed face-up since it’s unaffected by Monster effects). He attacked with Canadia and passed.

McGee drew, Kerr activated Anti-Spell Fragrance, and McGee passed.

Kerr skipped his draw due to Reckless Greed, Flip Summoned Dupe Frog, and then used Dupe Frog and Paleozoic Canadia to Xyz Summon Toadally Awesome! It attacked for 2200 points of damage, leaving McGee at 4600 LP to Kerr’s 7000 LP.

McGee drew Ultimate Conductor Tyranno. Kerr activated Toadally Awesome’s effect to Special Summon a Frog, but McGee Chained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy it. The Chain resolved to Special Summon Swap Frog from the Deck while Toadally Awesome’s other effect let Kerr add Dupe Frog from his Graveyard to his hand. McGee then banished 2 more Dinos to Special Summon Ultimate Conductor Tyranno! In the Battle Phase, Ultimate Conductor Tyranno destroyed each of Kerr’s monsters, leaving Kerr with 5000 LP.

Kerr skipped his second draw due to Reckless Greed. He Normal Summoned Dupe Frog, then used his in-grave Ronintoadin to banish another Dupe Frog to Special Summon it. This prompted McGee to use Ultimate Conductor Tyranno to destroy Giant Rex to turn Kerr’s field face-down.

McGee use Ultimate Conductor Tyranno’s effect again to clear Kerr’s field and reduce him to 3000 LP.

Kerr drew, Set a card, Special Summoned Ronintoadin and passed.

McGee drew Souleating Oviraptor and used the effect to send Miscellaneousaurus from his Deck to the Graveyard. He used Ultimate Conductor Tyranno’s effect to destroy Ronintoadin then attacked directly with Souleating Oviraptor, leaving Kerr at 200 LP.

Kerr drew, Set another card, brought back Ronintoadin again and passed.

McGee attacked with Ultimate Conductor Tyranno but Kerr activated Mirror Force to clear McGee’s field and also brought back a Canadia from the Graveyard. In Main Phase 2, McGee banished Miscellaneousaurus with 3 other Dinos to Special Summon another Souleating Oviraptor from his Deck. Among those Dinos was Giant Rex which came back to the field.

Kerr drew, Set the draw, and conceded after that.

Duel 2

Kerr elected to go first in Duel 2 and Set a monster and Set cards to his back row.

McGee’s starting hand was Cosmic Cyclone, Dark Grepher, Twin Twisters, Souleating Oviraptor, and Fossil Dig. He drew another Dark Grepher. In Main Phase 1, McGee activated Fossil Dig, adding Miscellaneousaurus from his Deck to his hand. Kerr activated Mind Crush declaring Miscellaneousaurus and McGee Chained Cosmic Cyclone to banish Kerr’s Set Imperial Iron Wall. Next, McGee Normal Summoned Souleating Oviraptor and used its effect to add Overtex Qoatus to his hand. He discarded it to Special Summon Dark Grepher. Overtex Qoatus’s effect added a Double Evolution Pill from McGee’s Deck to his hand. (Neither Duelist realized that Overtex’s effect only activates when discarded for an effect. Dark Grepher’s Summon is not a card effect.) He activated Double Evolution Pill, banishing the Overtex Qoatus in his Graveyard and the Dark Grepher in his hand to Special Summon another Overtex Qoatus from his Deck. Overtex Qoatus attacked and destroyed Kerr’s Set Dupe Frog letting Kerr add Swap Frog from his Deck to his hand. McGee attacked directly with Dark Grepher and Souleating Oviraptor.

Kerr drew to 4 cards in hand. He Set a card to the back, then discarded Ronintoadin to Special Summon Swap Frog whose effect sent another Ronintoadin from the Deck to the Graveyard. He bounced the Swap Frog back to his hand, then used the additional Frog Summon to Normal Summon Dupe Frog, then Normal Summoned Swap Frog. He brought back a Ronintoadin, then used it and a Dupe Frog to Link Summon Mistar Boy. He then brought back another Ronintoadin and used it and Swap to Xyz Summon Toadally Awesome! He used his monsters to destroy McGee’s Dark Grepher and Souleating Oviraptor.

McGee drew Ultimate Conductor Tyranno for turn. Toadally Awesome’s effect Special Summoned a Swap Frog  from the Deck. McGee then Special Summoned Ultimate Conductor Tyranno(Kerr wanted to activate Imperial Iron Wall during the Summon but because Ultimate Conductor Tyranno’s Summon doesn’t start a Chain, Imperial Iron Wall couldn’t be activated until the Summon was completed. Kerr activated Imperial Iron Wall after the fact anyway.) In the Battle Phase, Ultimate Conductor Tyranno destroyed both Mistar Boy and Toadally Awesome by battle with Kerr using their effects to add Ronintoadin and Swap Frog to his hand.

With Imperial Iron Wall on the field, the Ronintoadin in the Graveyard couldn’t come back to defend Kerr’s LP.

McGee wins the Match and moves on with a 2-0 record!
