South America WCQ Round 7 Feature Match: Gonzalo Orihuela vs. Alexander Choque

June 30th, 2018

Gonzalo Orihuela is here from Bolivia, packing a Mekk-Knight Sky Striker Trickstar Deck. This Frankenstein Deck has gained a lot of popularity this weekend, with Duelists using the best cards from each theme to generate a lot of advantage. His opponent is Alexander Choque, from Peru, using a Burning Abyss Chaos Deck! His Deck features only monsters, except for three copies of the new Sekka’s Lightfrom Flames of Destruction.

Duel 1

Choque chose to play first, and had a hand of Gallis the Star Beast; Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended; Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss; Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning; and Valerifawn, Mystical Beast of the Forest. He used Gallis, sending Rescue Cat to the Graveyard for 800 damage, and Special Summoned Gallis. He Normal Summoned Valerifawn, and Synchro Summoned Naturia Beast.

Orihuela Set a card in the same column as Naturia Beast, and Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Blue Sky. He added Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall to his hand. Then, he Normal Summoned Trickstar Lycoris. He passed with no other plays.

Choque drew Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He sent Naturia Beast to destroy Lycoris in battle.

Orihuela sent his Blue Sky to attack Naturia Beast, losing the battle. That opened up his field to Special Summon Purple Nightfall, and he Set another back row card.

Choque drew Fiendish Rhino Warrior. He Set it. In the End Phase, Orihuela used Purple Nightfall’s effect to banish itself, adding Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse to his hand.

Orihuela returned Purple Nightfall to the field, then Special Summoned Indigo Eclipse. He Normal Summoned Lycoris, and moved to the Battle Phase. Purple Nightfall destroyed Naturia Beast in battle, then Indigo Eclipse destroyed Fiendish Rhino Warrior. The Rhino sent Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard, and its effect Special Summoned Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss in Defense Position. In Main Phase 2, Orihuela played Trickstar Light Stage to add Trickstar Candina to his hand. He combined all of his monsters into Knightmare Unicorn, discarding Droll & Lock Bird, and Choque discarded Sauravis to protect Scarm. Orihuela played Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones, then Link Summoned Sky Striker Ace – Kagari and put Hornet Drones back in his hand. He used Kagari to play Sky Striker Ace – Shizuku, and its effect put Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! in his hand.

Choque drew Effect Veiler. He Normal Summoned Calcab, combining his Malebranches to play Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. He then banished Sauravis and Graff to play Black Luster Soldier! Dante detached Calcab to send three monsters to the grave, and Calcab bounced away one of Orihuela’s Set cards. Dante attacked Shizuku first. Black Luster Soldier attacked Unicorn, and had its second attack blocked by Scapegoat. One Sheep Token went down. In Main Phase 2, Choque discarded Libic and used Dante to Xyz Summon Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal in Defense Position.

Orihuela used his Sheep Tokens to play two copies of Link Spider. He then used Link Spider with a Sheep Token to play Knightmare Cerberus – Orihuela discarded Twin Twisters for it, but Choque negated it with Effect Veiler. Knightmare Cerberus and Link Spider were used to play Topologic Trisbaena. He played Engage to get Sky Striker Mecha – Widow Anchor, and used it to steal Black Luster Soldier! Choque used Beatrice’s effect to send Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard, banishing Black Luster Soldier for the turn. Orihuela played Trickstar Candina, searching out Lycoris, and Special Summoned the Lycoris by bouncing Candina. Lycoris and Trisbaena were used to play Firewall Dragon! Orihuela played Hornet Drones, and Link Summoned Kagari to get back Widow Anchor. Kagari and Firewall were used to play Space Insulator, then Widow Anchor took control of Beatrice. Space Insulator attacked directly, followed by Beatrice. In Main Phase 2, Orihuela used both monsters to play Knightmare Phoenix. Since the Dante Xyz Material went to the Graveyard, Choque added Farfa to his hand. In the End Phase, Scarm searched out Tour Guide From the Underworld. Black Luster Soldier returned to Choque’s side of the field, and Orihuela knew he wouldn’t survive another turn!

Orihuela makes a huge sequence of plays, stealing multiple monsters, but can’t close out the Duel! Choque is one win away from taking this Match.

Duel 2

Orihuela chose to play first, and began with Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! to add Widow Anchor to his hand. Choque used Droll & Lock Bird to shut him down for the rest of the turn. Orihuela played Hornet Drones into Kagari, returing Engage to his hand. He Set two back row cards, and Normal Summoned Lycoris.

Choque had a hand of two Rescue Cats, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, and Valerifawn; he drew Fairy Tail – Snow. He went into his Battle Phase, feigning Evenly Matched, and Orihuela flipped up Shared Ride. Choque went into Main Phase 2 and played Rescue Cat, and Orihuela flipped up Widow Anchor to negate it.

Orihuela Set a back row card and Special Summoned Mekk-Knight Blue Sky, adding Purple Nightfall to his hand. He played Trickstar Light Stage next, and Choque used Ash Blossom. Orihuela used all his monsters to Link Summon Knightmare Unicorn, then Special Summoned Purple Nightfall. Unicorn destroyed Rescue Cat in battle, and Purple Nightfall attacked directly, dropping Choque to 3400 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Purple Nightfall banished itself to add Mekk-Knight Indigo Eclipse to his hand. He then flipped up Engage to get Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones, and played another Light Stage to get Candina. He played Hornet Drones and Link Summoned Kagari, adding Engage to his hand. He used Kagari and Unicorn to play Topologic Gumblar Dragon! He played Engage to get Hornet Drones and draw a card. Candina came down next, adding Trickstar Reincarnation. He Set three cards to his back row to finish the turn.

Choque drew Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended. He played his second Rescue Cat, this time successfully resolving its effect to Special Summon two copies of Gallis the Star Beast. He Xyz Summoned Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss, using its effect to send Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Calcab, and Scarm to the Graveyard! Calcab bounced one of Orihuela’s Set cards, and Cir Special Summoned Calcab. Dante destroyed Candina in battle, then switched to Defense Position. In the End Phase, Scarm’s effect put Tour Guide From the Underworld in Choque’s hand. Orihuela flipped up Scapegoat before the turn’s end. That triggered Gumblar Dragon! Orihuela discarded Hornet Drones and Indigo Eclipse, forcing Choque to discard Snow and Tour Guide! Losing Tour Guide was a harsh blow, but getting Snow in the Graveyard for free could be worth it.

Orihuela returned Purple Nightfall to the field. He used Purple Nightfall and a Sheep Token to play Knightmare Cerberus, co-linked to Gumblar Dragon. He discarded Candina to try destroying Calcab, but Cerberus was negated by Sauravis. He had no cards left to discard for Gumblar. He then used a Sheep Token to play Link Spider. Link Spider and a Sheep Token were used to play Knightmare Phoenix. Gumblar Dragon destroyed Dante in battle, which returned Scarm to the hand. Orihuela’s other monsters attacked, destroying Calcab and hitting directly. Orihuela flipped up Trickstar Reincarnation to give Choque a new hand (Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and another Scarm), then banished Reincarnation to Special Summon Candina. It attacked directly to take the Duel, but Choque Special Summoned Snow from the Graveyard! It hit the field and turned Candina face-down.

Choque drew his third Scarm. He banished Sauravis and Tour Guide to play Black Luster Soldier, and it banished Gumblar Dragon. Snow destroyed Candina in battle. He Set Scarm to finish.

Orihuela used his last Sheep Token to play Link Spider, then used all of his monsters to play Borreload Dragon. Borreload attacked and took control of Black Luster Soldier, which attacked Snow to end the Duel!

The Duelists moved to their Side Decks, and the round timer ended while they were doing so. As such, this Match is a draw!
