Alex Coffey from Enfield, Connecticut ended the Swiss rounds in 11th place with a record of 9-2 with his Gouki Deck. He’s playing against the 22nd seed Daniel Shogan from Danville, Virginia who also had a record of 9-2 but is the only SPYRAL Deck left in the field. Which Duelist will move on to the Top 16? Duel 1
Coffey won the roll and elected to go first. He started off with Gouki Suprex and used the effect to Special Summon Gouki Twistcobra to Link Summon Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights. He used all of the effects to add Gouki Suprex, Gouki Re-Match and Blue Mountain Butterspy. After the Chain resolved, Shogan activated Droll & Lock Bird to prevent further searching this turn. Coffey then activate Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights’s other effect, sending Divine Sword – Phoenix Blade from the Deck to the Graveyard to Special Summon Gouki Octostretch from the Deck in Defense Position. He banished 2 Warriors to add the Divine Sword – Phoenix Blade back to his hand then equipped it to Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights.
Shogan started with a hand of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue, SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red, Terraforming and Soul Charge. Not wanting to give up his strategy, he conceded the Duel without revealing any SPYRAL specific cards. Coffey would have to Side Deck not knowing what he was up against.
Duel 2
Shogan elected to go first. He started with a hand of Reinforcement of the Army, Foolish Burial Goods, Droll & Lock Bird, Called by the Grave and Knightmare Corruptor Iblee. He activated Foolish Burial Goods sending SPYRAL MISSION – Assault from the Deck to the Graveyard. He then activated Reinforcement of the Army to add SPYRAL Tough from his Deck to his hand. Next, he Set Called by the Grave and passed.
Coffey activated Instant Fusion to Special Summon Invoked Raidjin. He then used Raidjin’s effect to turn itself face-down.
Shogan Normal Summoned SPYRAL Tough and used the effect declaring Monster. Coffey Chained Effect Veiler and Shogan flipped the Set Called by the Grave to banish Effect Veiler but Coffey Chained another Effect Veiler!
Coffey Flip Summoned Invoked Raidjin and attacked Shogan’s SPYRAL Tough, destroying it.
Shogan drew and passed.
Coffey equipped Divine Sword – Phoenix Blade to Raidjin and attacked directly.
Shogan Set Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring and passed.
Coffey Tributed Invoked Raidjin to Tribute Summon Gouki Bearhug. On the Summon, Coffey Special Summoned Blue Mountain Butterspy from his hand. He then used both monsters to Link Summon Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights whose effect let Coffey add Blue Mountain Butterspy from his Deck to his hand while the Gouki effect added Gouki Suprex. After the Chain resolved, Shogan activated Droll & Lock Bird. Coffey then activated Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights’s other effect, sending Moon Mirror Shield to the Graveyard, but Shogan Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate the effect. Next, Coffey picked the Divine Sword – Phoenix Blade back up, then used Monster Reborn to Special Summon Invoked Raidjin. Both monsters attacked, destroying the face-down Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring and inflicting direct damage.
Shogan activated Foolish Burial Goods, sending SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue from the Deck to the Graveyard. Next, he Set Knightmare Corruptor Iblee and passed.
Coffey Normal Summoned Gouki Suprex and Special Summoned Blue Mountain Butterspy from his hand. He used Butterspy and Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights to Link Summon Knightmare Unicorn. He used the effect, discarding Soul Charge to kick Shogan’s Set Knightmare Corruptor Iblee back to the Deck. When Coffey moved into the Battle Phase, he took one direct attack, used SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to revive SPYRAL Tough to block another attack, but the third attack ended the match!
Coffey moves on to Top 16!
