200th YCS Mexico City: Round 3 Feature Match – Grecia Vargas vs. Roberto Morales

September 22nd, 2018

Welcome to Round 3 of YCS Mexico City! Both of our Duelists this round are from right here in Mexico City. We have Grecia Vargas, using the new popular form of Burning Abyss – all monsters, except three copies of Sekka’s Light! Of special note is that Vargas is married to one of the best Central American Duelists around, two-time Ultimate Duelist Champion Alejandro Garcia. What an awesome Dueling team! Her opponent in this Match is Roberto Morales, using Lightsworn. Most Lightsworn Duelists use Zombies, but Morales is sticking to a purer build than most.

Duel 1

Morales won the die roll and chose to play first. He played Charge of the Light Brigade, sending Soul Charge, Raigeki, and Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn to the Graveyard to add Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner to his hand. Vargas used Droll & Lock Bird to prevent any further searching. Morales played Lumina, discarding Minerva, Lightsworn Maiden to Special Summon Raiden. Minerva’s effect sent Called by the Grave to the Graveyard. He used Raiden next, sending Card Destruction and Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress to the Graveyard, and Vargas destroyed Raiden with Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit. In the End Phase, Lumina sent Breakthrough Skill, Solar Recharge, and Wulf, Lightsworn Beast to the Graveyard! He Special Summoned Wulf.

Vargas began with a hand of two Sekka’s Light, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, and Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. She drew another Droll & Lock Bird. She played Sekka’s Light first, drawing Fairy Tail – Snow and Tour Guide From the Underworld. Then, she used Sekka’s Light in the Graveyard, putting Snow back to draw Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. She Special Summoned both Farfa and Calcab, using them to play Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. Dante sent Gallis the Star Beast, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, and Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard, and Morales negated it with Effect Veiler. She Normal Summoned Tour Guide and Special Summoned Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. She used Cir and Dante to play Wee Witch’s Apprentice, and Cir revived Dante, while Dante put Cir in her hand. Then, she used both Cir and Dante to play Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal! Beatrice attacked Lumina, and Wee Witch’s Apprentice attacked Wulf. Tour Guide attacked directly. In the End Phase, Scarm’s effect put Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss in her hand.

Morales used Breakthrough Skill in the Graveyard, negating Wee Witch’s Apprentice. He played Snow next, targeting Beatrice, and Vargas responded with Beatrice’s effect. It detached Dante to send Farfa to the Graveyard. Dante returned Cir to her hand, and Farfa banished Snow for the turn. However, Snow’s effect had still resolved and turned Beatrice face-down. Unfortunately, Morales had no follow-up! Snow returned to the field at the end of the turn.

Vargas drew Danger! Bigfoot!, and played Sekka’s Light to draw Effect Veiler and Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. She played Graff, which was instantly destroyed thanks to its effect. Graff Special Summoned Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, which was also destroyed. That Special Summoned Cir from her hand but with its effect negated. She used Tour Guide and Cir to play Dante, sending Bigfoot, Scarm, and Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended to the Graveyard. The detached Cir brought her other Dante back to the field. She used Bigfoot next, discarding Effect Veiler. That let her Special Summon Bigfoot and draw Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Bigfoot attacked and wiped out Snow. Dante attacked, and Morales took the hit, dropping to 2050 Life Points. Morales Special Summoned Snow in Defense Position, turning Beatrice face-down again. Wee Witch’s Apprentice attacked Snow, and the remaining Dante tried to attack, but Morales had exactly enough cards to play Snow again. He turned Dante face-down, but now was left with no Graveyard! When he drew his next card, he knew it was all over!

Duel 2

Morales started again, with Charge of the Light Brigade again. He sent another Charge, Wulf, and Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to the Graveyard. Vargas used Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, and Morales had Called by the Grave to negate it! His Charge resolved, adding Raiden to his hand, and he Special Summoned Wulf. Raiden came down and activated its effect, but was destroyed by Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit! Raiden still resolved, sending Lyla and Felis, Lightsworn Archer to the Graveyard, and he Special Summoned Felis. He used both of his monsters to play Minerva, the Exalted Lightsworn! Its effect sent Anti-Spell Fragrance, Gem-Knight Garnet, and Performage Hat Tricker to the Graveyard.

Vargas had Sekka’s Light, Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, and Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss remaining in her hand. She drew Danger! Bigfoot!, and started with Sekka’s Light to draw two copies of Fiendish Rhino Warrior. She played a Rhino and Special Summoned Cir from her hand. She played Dante, and its effect sent Scarm, Droll & Lock Bird, and Farfa to the Graveyard. Morales destroyed Dante with Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit; Dante returned Cir to the hand, and Farfa banished Minerva for the turn. Vargas banished Sekka’s Light from her Graveyard to shuffle Fiendish Rhino Warrior back into the Deck, drawing Gallis the Star Beast. She banished Ghost Ogre and Farfa to play Black Luster, then activated Bigfoot in her hand. She discarded Cir, and Special Summoned Bigfoot to draw… Fiendish Rhino Warrior yet again. She attacked with her two monsters, leaving Morales with only 2000 Life Points. In the End Phase, Scarm added Tour Guide From the Underworld to her hand, and Minerva returned to the field.

Morales played Lumina, discarding Snow to Special Summon Raiden. Raiden sent Giant Rex and Solar Recharge to the Graveyard. He used his three monsters to play Curious, the Lightsworn Dominion. Its effect sent Glow-Up Bulb to the Graveyard, then also sent Lumina, Brilliant Fusion, and Performage Trick Clown to the Graveyard. Trick Clown was Special Summoned to the field. He then banished seven cards for Snow’s effect, including Giant Rex. He Special Summoned Snow and Rex, using Snow to turn Bigfoot face-down. Glow-Up Bulb hit the field, sending Anti-Spell Fragrance to the Graveyard. He used Snow, Rex, and Bulb to play Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! It banished Fiendish Rhino Warrior from Vargas’s hand, Dante from her Graveyard, and Black Luster from her field! Morales Special Summoned Snow again, sending it to attack and destroy the face-down Bigfoot. Trishula and Curious attacked directly. In the second Main Phase, he used Snow and Trick Clown to play Abyss Dweller! He Set one card in his back row to finish.

Vargas drew Sekka’s Light, using it to also draw Scarm and Barbar. Morales used Abyss Dweller to keep Vargas from using the Light’s second effect. She Special Summoned Scarm and Barbar, and Morales once again Special Summoned Snow by banishing Giant Rex! Snow turned Barbar face-down. Vargas played Tour Guide, and her Scarm self-destructed. However, Tour Guide brought another Scarm to the field, and she Xyz Summoned Number 47: Nightmare Shark! It attacked directly for exactly the 2000 damage she needed, giving Vargas the Duel and the Match!

Grecia Vargas is your victor, with Sekka’s Light Burning Abyss!
