North America WCQ: Yugi-Parent Spotlight – Catherine Kelly

June 22nd, 2019

Catherine Kelly and her son Sean are here from Ontario, Canada.  Sean is playing in the Dragon Duel World Championship Qualifier and has been playing the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME for four years.

“No one plays where we live so he only gets to play at tournaments like this”.  When asked about the furthest they’ve traveled for a Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament, she said “this one!  Took us over 7 hours driving to get here.”  Sean qualified for the Dragon Duel WCQ at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series at Niagara Falls in 2018.

“Sean really enjoys Yu-Gi-Oh!  He likes watching the cartoons and reenacting it.”  When asked about what impact Yu-Gi-Oh! has had for Sean, Catherine spoke about the skills required to play the game.  “When he first started playing, he was motivated to develop his reading and math skills”, both of which are necessary for gameplay.

“Sean lives for this.  This tournament is all he’s been talking about all year.  It’s going to be the highlight of his year!”
