Round 9 Feature Match: Gerald Yagans South Chaves vs. Jonathan Rogelio Padilla Medina

Welcome to Day 2! This Round we have Gerald Yagans South Chaves, a three-time Costa Rica National Champion and winner of YCS Guatemala 2017, facing off against Jonathan Rogelio Padilla Medina. Both Duelists have brought Danger! Orcust this weekend, but only one can advance to the next Round. At 6-1-1 and practically guarantee their spot in Top 64.

Padilla won the roll and chose to go first.

Duel One:

Padilla started his turn with Danger! Jackalope, but South managed to rip it out of his hand! The Danger! Jackalope activated its effect to Special Summon Danger! Mothman from his Deck, then Normal Summoned Orcust Harp Horror and used both to Link Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton. He then banished Orcust Harp Horror to Special Summon Orcust Knightmare from his Deck, and used both monsters to Link Summon The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche. He banished Orcust Knightmare next to send Orcust Cymbal Skeleton to the Graveyard, then used the effect of The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche to send The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak to the Graveyard and Set Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade. He banished The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak to add The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots to his hand before banishing Orcust Cymbal Skeleton to Special Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton. He Special Summoned The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots next and then used the effect of Galatea, the Orcust Automaton to shuffle back a banished monster and Set Orcust Crescendo. He activated The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots next, banishing it from the Graveyard, to add Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade to his hand. He Set three cards to his back row, for a total of five, and ended his turn.

South drew for turn and activated Sky Striker – Mobilize Engage!, using it to add Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones to his hand. He slammed that down next, using the Token to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Kagari, and using her effect to add back the Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones so he could activate it again. He used both of his monsters to Link Summon Knightmare Cerberus and activated its effect, discarding Orcust Knightmare, to try to destroy Galatea, the Orcust Automaton, but Padilla responded with Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade to negate it as well as Called by the Grave to banish the Orcust Knightmare. He tried to end his turn after Setting card, but during the End Phase Padilla had Twin Twisters to destroy the Set Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade.

Padilla began his turn with the effect of Galatea, the Orcust Automaton, using it to Set Orcustrated Babel from his Deck by shuffling back a banished Orcust. He activated Orcust Cymbal Skeleton next, Special Summoning Galatea, the Orcust Automaton, then Xyz Summoned used its effect to attach Orcust Cymbal Skeleton from his banished pile while The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche destroyed the Knightmare Cerberus. He declared attacks with all of his monsters to leave South with 1500 Life Points, the Link Summoned Longirsu, the Orcust Orchestrator using his Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star and Galatea, the Orcust Automaton. South responded with Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay but South used his Orcust Crescendo to negate it

South drew and with no answer to Padilla’s impressive field, conceded the first Duel!

Padilla’s explosive turn one leads him to a quick victory over South. Can South win the next two Duels? Or will Padilla have another impressive Set of turns to finish things off?

South chose to go first.

Duel Two:

South started with Trickstar Light Stage, using it to add Trickstar Candina to his hand which he immediately Normal Summoned to add Trickstar Corobane. He Special Summoned that next and used both monsters to Link Summon Knightmare Phoenix, which immediately turned into Knightmare Mermaid. He used its effect, discarding Orcust Knightmare, to Special Summon Orcust Knightmare from his Deck. From there he Link Summoned Galatea, the Orcust Automaton using both of his monsters before banishing Orcust Knightmare to send Orcust Harp Horror from his Deck to the Graveyard. He banished Orcust Harp Horror next to Special Summon Orcust Cymbal Skeleton, and then activated Galatea, the Orcust Automaton to return his banished Orcust Knightmare and Set Orcust Crescendo. He used both monsters to Link Summon The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche, then activated its effect to Set Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade and send The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak to the Graveyard. He activated The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak next, banishing it form the Graveyard, to add The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots to his hand. After that Orcust Cymbal Skeleton was banished to Special Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton, and he overlayed Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star and used its effect to attach Orcust Cymbal Skeleton as an Xyz material. He Special Summoned The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots next and used that along with Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star to Link Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton. He activated The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots, banishing it to add Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade, and Set three cards from his hand before ending his turn!

Padilla began the turn with Foolish Burial, using it to send Orcust Knightmare. He used it, targeting The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche, to send Orcust Harp Horror to the Graveyard, then banished Orcust Harp Horror to Special Summon Orcust Cymbal Skeleton. He Normal Summoned Orcust Harp Horror then used both mosnters to Link Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton. He Set and activated The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigadine, and followed it up with Mind Control but it got negated by Orcust Crescendo! Pressing onward, Padilla activated Danger! Tsuchinoko with two cards in hand including itself, and South managed to rip it and send it to the Graveyard. It triggered its effect to Special Summon itself, then Padilla used Galatea, the Orcust Automaton to shuffle back one of his banished Orcusts to Set Orcustrated Babel. He overlayed Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star next, but its effect was negated by Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade. Padilla used all three of his monsters to Link Summon The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche, but it was also negated by another Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade! He banished Orcust Cymbal Skeleton from his Graveyard to Special Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton, then Set a card before ending his turn. During the End Phase, South had Twin Twisters to discard another copy of Twin Twisters and blow away the Set card along with Orcustrated Babel!

South drew to a single card, then banished Orcust Knightmare to send World Legacy – “World Wand” from his Deck to the Graveyard. He banished World Legacy – “World Wand” next to Special Summon Orcust Harp Horror from his banished pile, thused Galatea, the Orcust Automaton to shuffle back and Orcust to Set Orcustrated Babel. He Flipped that up next before using The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigadine to Special Summon itself, and Normal Summoned Orcust Harp Horror before overlaying both of those monsters for Time Thief Redoer! To make sure he was not robbed of the remaining 17 minutes of the Round, Padilla conceded!

South manages to pull off his Orcust combo turn one unimpeded, allowing him to take the second game just as quickly as Padilla took the first. Who will win in the final Duel?

Duel Three

Padilla began the final Duel with Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones, then used the Token to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Kagari, and used it to add back the Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones so he could Summon another Token. He used both monsters to Link Summon Knightmare Cerberus, then used that to Link Summon Knightmare Mermaid. He discarded Danger! Nessie next for the effect of Knightmare Mermaid to Special Summon Orcust Knightmare, and added Danger! Jackalope thanks to Danger! Nessie. He used his monsters to Link Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton, but South had Artifact Lancea to prevent Padilla from banishing this turn! Padilla pressed on with Danger! Tsuchinoko, discarding Artifact Lancea, to Special Summon itself from the hand and draw one card. He used both of his monsters to Link Summon The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche, using that to Set Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade and send The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak to the Graveyard. He activated Danger! Tsuchinoko next, discarding Danger! Jackalope, to Special Summon itself and draw a card. Danger! Jackalope trigger to Special Summon Danger! Nessie from his Deck. He Set two more cards to his back row before ending his turn.

South drew and activated Terraforming to add Trickstar Light Stage, then used that to add Trickstar Candina to his hand. The Trickstar Light Stage locked down one of Padilla’s back row, and South followed that up with Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones, but Padilla had Artifact Sanctum to Special Summon Artifact Scythe! The Artifact Scythe activated, and South pressed forward with Set Rotation, to get Mystic Mine and give Padilla Orcustrated Babel.

Padilla drew and with no out to Mystic Mine, ended his turn!

South drew nad Link Summoned Sky Striker Ace – Kagari using his Token, and then activated its effect to add back Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones. He activated the Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones next to Special Summon a Token, and used both monsters to Link Summon Knightmare Phoenix. He used its effect, discarding The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak, to destroy the Orcustrated Babel he had given Padilla. He Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina next and used its effect to add Trickstar Light Stage to his hand before banishing The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak to add The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots to his hand. He Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina next and used its effect to add another Trickstar Light Stage, then used all of his monsters to Link Summon Knightmare Unicorn. He tried to use its effect but was met with Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade, and pressed onward with Trickstar Light Stage to grab Trickstar Corobane from his Deck. He Special Summoned it and used the Orcust Harp Horror he discarded to Special Summon Orcust Cymbal Skeleton, before using it to Link Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton, before using it to shuffle back a banished Orcust to Set Orcust Crescendo. He Special Summoned The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots from his hand to Link Summon The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche, then overlayed Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star next to clear Padilla’s field. He declared an attack with The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots but after that, Padilla used Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade to Special Summon back his The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche. South Set a card and ended his turn.

Padilla began with Orcust Harp Horror to Special Summon Orcust Cymbal Skeleton, then Normal Summoned Armageddon Knight and used it to send Orcust Knightmare from his Deck to the Graveyard. He Link Summoned Galatea, the Orcust Automaton next, and followed that up with Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star. Once that hi the field, South Flipped two copies of Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade and Padilla conceded with no time left in the Round!

Thanks to a key Set Rotation into Mystic Mine, Gerald Yagans South Chaves claims victory and advances to the final Round of Swiss with a 7-1-1 record!
