UDS Invitational Indianapolis, IN: Round 10 Feature Match – Douglas Zeeff vs. Dominic Couch
Welcome to Day 2! We’re playing 4 more Rounds of Swiss before cutting to the Top 16 for the Single Elimination playoff! In Round 10, we’re going straight to Table 1. Doug Zeeff is using Altergeist, and despite Altergeist Multifaker being placed on the Limited list he’s made it to Day 2 with an 8-1 record. His opponent is Dominic Couch, the only undefeated Duelist left in the room, with a Danger! / Crusadia / Thunder Dragon / Guardragon combo Deck.
Duel 1
Couch won the roll (“I won two die rolls yesterday!”) and elected to go first. Couch started with Danger!? Tsuchinoko?. Zeeff picked Chaos Dragon Levianeer which was discarded, and the Snake was Special Summoned. He Tribute Set a monster and passed.
Zeeff’s opening hand is Crackdown, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Infinite Impermanence, Solemn Strike and Altergeist Meluseek. He drew Solemn Judgment for turn. Zeeff Normal Summoned Altergeist Meluseek and attacked directly for 500. Meluseek’s effect sent the Set Thunder Dragondark to the Graveyard. Its effect let Couch add Thunder Dragonduo from his Deck to his hand. In Main Phase 2, Zeeff turned his Meluseek into a Linkuriboh. Meluseek’s Graveyard effect added Altergeist Multifaker from his Deck to his hand. He Set 4 cards to the back and passed. “Set a million” said Couch. “They’re all pretty bad” remarked Zeeff.
Couch Normal Summoned Crusadia Reclusia. Zeeff activated Crackdown to steal it. Altergeist Multifaker came down, which brought out another Altergeist Meluseek from the Deck. Couch activated Thunder Dragonhawk from his hand but Zeeff negate the effect with Solemn Strike. Couch tried to Summon Thunder Dragonduo but Zeeff negated the Summon with Solemn Judgment! Thunder Dragondark’s banished effect was activated but Zeeff negated that with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Couch then discarded Thunder Dragonroar to get back Thunder Dragonhawk. He passed there.
Zeeff drew Altergeist Marionetter for turn. He used Altergeist Meluseek and Altergeist Multifaker to Link Summon Altergeist Hexstia. Altergeist Kunquery was added to his hand with Meluseek’s Graveyard effect, then Zeeff Normal Summoned Altergeist Marionetter and that was enough for Couch to concede.
Duel 2
Couch elected to go first. He discarded Thunder Dragon to add 2 more to his hand. Danger!? Tsuchinoko? was next, Zeeff hit it and it was discarded. Danger!? Tsuchinoko? came to the field. Thunder Dragonhawk was discarded to Special Summon the Thunder Dragon for his Graveyard, and both monsters were used to Knightmare Phoenix which immediately went to the Graveyard to Link Summon Knightmare Mermaid whose effect let Couch discard Thunder Dragondark trying to Special Summon a Knightmare monster from the Deck, but Zeeff activated Infinite Impermanence from his hand to negate the effect. Thunder Dragondark was banished from the Graveyard to Special Summon White Dragon Wyverbuster from his hand. Thunder Dragondark’s effect let Couch add Thunder Dragonduo from his Deck to his hand. Couch Special Summoned Thunder Dragonduo by banishing Thunder Dragon and Danger!? Tsuchinoko?. White Dragon Wyverbuster and Knightmare Mermaid were used to Link Summon PSY-Framelord Lambda. White Dragon Wyverbuster’s effect let Couch add Black Dragon Collapserpent from his Deck to his hand. He Special Summoned Black Dragon Collapserpent banishing White Dragon Wyverbuster. Guardragon Elpy came down next, then Triple Burst Dragon. Guardragon Elpy’s effect got hit with a second Infinite Impermanence!
Zeeff drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, adding to his hand of Pot of Extravagance, Solemn Judgment and Altergeist Protocol. He activated Pot of Extravagance, banishing 6 random cards from the Extra Deck and drawing another Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring and Gnomaterial. He Normal Summoned Gnomaterial and Link Summon Linkuriboh. He Set Solemn Judgment and Altergeist Protocol and passed.
Couch used Guardragon Elpy again but Zeeff negated it with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Triple Burst attacked and Zeeff used Linkuriboh’s effect. Guardragon Elpy attacked directly.
Zeeff drew another Solemn Judgment. He Set it and passed.
Couch used Guardragon Elpy again, and Zeeff discarded Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring again. Couch attacked with Triple Burst and Guardragon Elpy for 3400 damage.
Zeeff drew Crackdown. He Set it and passed.
Couch drew for turn and Zeeff activated Crackdown right away to steal Guardragon Elpy. Couch Special Summoned Crusadia Reclusia but Zeeff negated the Summon with Solemn Judgment. Couch attempted to Summon Chaos Dragon Levianeer and while Zeeff had another Solemn Judgment, that would put him at too low of LP to survive the attack from Triple Burst Dragon. Zeeff conceded and we’re going to the third Duel!
Duel 3
“Who’s starting? The Trap Card Deck?” asked Couch. “Yeah” replied Zeeff.
Zeeff started with Solemn Judgment, Inspector Boarder, Altergeist Protocol, Pot of Duality, and Artifact Lancea. He activated Pot of Pot of Duality revealing Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, Solemn Strike and Altergeist Marionetter. Zeeff took Solemn Strike and shuffled the rest back to the Deck. He Normal Summoned Inspector Boarder, Set 3 and passed.
Couch now had to play around Inspector Boarder with his Deck that was almost all monster effects. He Normal Summoned Crusadia Maximus. He used it to Link Summon Crusadia Magius but Zeeff negated the summon with Solemn Strike.
Zeeff drew Solemn Judgment. Inspector Boarder attacked for 2000. “Can’t use my Battle Fader with that one” remarked Couch. Zeeff Set Solemn Judgment and passed.
Couch set a monster and passed.
Zeeff drew Altergeist Manifestation. He attacked into Couch’s Set Danger!? Tsuchinoko?. He Set Manifestation and passed.
Couch Set a monster and passed.
Zeeff drew Altergeist Meluseek. Inspector Boarder attacked and destroyed Crusadia Arboria. Altergeist Meluseek attacked directly.
Couch Set a monster and passed.
Zeeff drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Inspector Boarder attacked Crusadia Maximus and Couch used Crusadia Arboria from the Graveyard to prevent Crusadia Maximus from being destroyed. Altergeist Meluseek attacked directly for 500 with its Continuous effect. In Main Phase 2 Zeeff sent Altergeist Meluseek to the Graveyard to Summon Linkuriboh! With a Link Monster on the field, Inspector Boarder now allowed each Duelist to activate one monster effect each per turn. He activated Altergeist Meluseek’s effect and Couch chained Thunder Dragondark form his hand to add another Thunder Dragondark from his Deck to his hand.
Couch drew and Zeeff activated Altergeist Manifestation to Special Summon Altergeist Meluseek from his Deck to his hand. Couch switched Crusadia Maximus to Attack Position. He banished Danger!? Tsuchinoko? and Crusadia Magius form his Graveyard to Special Summon Chaos Dragon Levianeer. Zeeff allowed the Summon, and Couch activated Thunder Dragonhawk and Zeeff chained Altergeist Protocol, sending Altergeist Meluseek to the Graveyard to negate Thunder Dragonhawk’s effect. Zeeff didn’t used Altergeist Meluseek’s effect. Couch attacked with Crusadia Maximus into Linkuriboh. Zeeff used the effect and Couch attacked with Chaos Dragon Levianeer into Inspector Boarder, clearing it from the field and now opened up the Duel to all amounts of monster effects. In Main Phase 2, Couch sent Maximus to the Graveyard to Tribute Summon Thunder Dragondark. Both Chaos Dragon Levianeer and Thunder Dragondark were sent to the Graveyard to Link Summon Knightmare Phoenix but Zeeff negated the Summon with Solemn Judgment. In a new chain, Thunder Dragondark activated and Zeeff Chained Altergeist Multifaker to Special Summon it from the hand. Multifaker’s other effect let Zeeff Summon Altergeist Meluseek from the Deck in Defense Position. With 4 cards in hand, Couch Special Summoned Thunder Dragonduo, banishing Crusadia Maximus and Chaos Dragon Levianeer from his Graveyard. He then discarded Thunder Dragonroar to add back Thunder Dragonhawk. Thunder Dragonduo was sent to the Graveyard to Special Summon Thunder Dragon Colossus.
Zeeff drew Solemn Strike. He switched Altergeist Meluseek to Attack Position and attacked directly with its effect. Altergeist Meluseek’s effect sent Thunder Dragon Colossus to the Graveyard, then Altergeist Multifaker attacked directly. In Main Phase 2, both monsters were used to Link Summon Altergeist Hexstia. Meluseek’s effect added Altergeist Marionetter which was Normal Summoned to Set Altergeist Protocol from the Deck. He then Altergeist Marionetter’s effect, sending itself to the Graveyard to Special Summon Altergeist Multifaker form the Graveyard and its other effect Special Summoned Altergeist Silquitous from the Deck. Altergeist Hexstia and Altergeist Silquitous to Link Summon another Altergeist Hexstia. Altergeist Hexstia’s Graveyard effect and Altergeist Silquitous’s effects activated, adding Altergeist Manifestation and Altergeist Meluseek from the Deck to his hand. He Set Altergeist Manifestation and Solemn Strike and passed.
Couch drew. Zeeff activated Altergeist Manifestation to Special Summon Altergeist Silquitous from the GY, then activated Artifact Lancea from his hand to prevent cards from being banished this turn. Couch discarded Thunder Dragonhawk and Zeeff negated the effect with Altergeist Protocol, sending a monster from the field to the Graveyard. Couch activated Danger! Thunderbird! from his hand but Zeeff negated the effect with Solemn Strike. Couch Set a monster and passed. In the End Phase, Zeeff activated Altergeist Silquitous to bounce his own Altergeist Protocol and Couch’s Set monster.
Zeeff drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring for turn. Zeeff did quick math with Couch at 3300 LP. Altergeist Hexstia and Altergeist Silquitous went to the Graveyard for Altergeist Hexstia. Hex’s effect in Graveyard let Zeeff add Altergeist Marionetter and Altergeist Manifestation. He Normal Summoned Altergeist Marionetter behind Altergeist Hexstia and both monsters attacked directly to end the match!
Doug Zeeff defeats the previous undefeated Dominic Couch and moves on with a 9-1 record!
