UDS Invitational Indianapolis, IN: Round 7 Feature Match – Alex Mondlak vs. Shawn Rai
Alex Mondlak from Westerville, Ohio is Dueling against Shawn Rai from Long Island, New York in a Round 7 Feature Match that pits 2 of the undefeated Duelists against one another. Alex Mondlak is using Cyber Dragons, just like he did in his Feature Match at YCS Chicago this past February. Cyber Dragons are a strong choice for this weekend’s tournament, since they were pretty much unaffected by the latest Forbidden & Limited List. Rai is using a Salamangreat Deck. Salamangreats took a hit by the latest Forbidden & Limited List since Salamangreat Gazelle and Salamangreat Circle are newly Limited, but Rai – and many other Duelists using Salamangreat Decks this weekend – have proven that they’re still a force to be reckoned with in the new Advanced Format. It’s time to Duel!
Duel One
Rai started off Duel 1 by activating Salamangreat Circle to add Salamangreat Gazelle from his Deck to his hand.
He Normal Summoned Salamangreat Spinny and sent it to the Graveyard to Link Summon Salamangreat Balelynx. He activated the effect of the Balelynx on his field and Gazelle in his hand. He Special Summoned Gazelle from his hand and added Salamangreat Sanctuary from his Deck to his hand. He activated the effect of his Gazelle on the field, but lost out to Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Next, Rai Special Summoned Spinny from his Graveyard and combined it with Gazelle to Xyz Summon Salamangreat Miragestallio. He activated its effect by detaching an Xyz Material, but Mondlak Chained the effect of PSY-Framegear Gamma in his hand to Special Summon Gamma along with a PSY-Frame Driver from his Deck and negate the activation of Miragestallio and destroy it. Rai activated the Sanctuary and used Balelynx as a Link Material to Summon another Balelynx. He Set a card to his back row before passing.
Mondlak drew a card and then had Cyber Dragon, Cyber Emergency, PSY-Framegear Gamma, and Cyber Dragon Herz in his hand. He activated Cyber Emergency to add Cyber Dragon Core to his hand and then Special Summoned Cyber Dragon. Rai activated Salamangreat Rage and sent Balelynx to the Graveyard to destroy Cyber Dragon. Next, Mondlak Summoned Core and used its effect to add Cyber Repair Plant to his hand. He activated it to add Galaxy Soldier to his hand and then discarded Herz from his hand to Special Summon Galaxy Soldier. He used its effect to add another Galaxy Soldier to his hand and used the effect of Herz to add a Cyber Dragon from his Deck to his hand. Next, he discarded PSY-Framegear Gamma from his hand to Special Summon another Galaxy Soldier. He combined both Soldiers to Xyz Summon Cyber Dragon Nova and then used its effect to Special Summon Cyber Dragon from his Graveyard. He attacked with Cyber Dragon and Core, dropping Rai to 5500 Life Points. Then, he attacked with Nova, and used its effect to banish Cyber Dragon from the Duel and double its ATK. Rai dropped down to 1300 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Mondlak used Nova as an Xyz Material to Summon Cyber Dragon Infinity and used Infinity’s effect to attach his own Cyber Dragon Core to it as an Xyz Material.
Rai activated Cynet Mining, but lost out to the effect of Infinity. Then, he Normal Summoned Sea Archiver and used it as a Link Material to Summon Balelynx. Then, he Special Summoned Spinny from his Graveyard and then used the effect of Sea Archiver to Special Summon it from his Graveyard. He combined Spinny with Sea Archiver to Xyz Summon Salamangreat Miragestallio and used Miragestallio’s effect to Special Summon Salamangreat Jack Jaguar from his Deck. Next, he sent Miragestallio and Balelynx to the Graveyard to Link Summon Salamangreat Sunlight Wolf and used Miragestallio’s effect to return Infinity to the Extra Deck. He combined Sunlight Wolf with Jack Jaguar to Link Summon another Sunlight Wolf and then used Sunlight Wolf’s effect to add Salamangreat Rage from his Graveyard to his hand. He then returned a Sunlight Wolf from his Graveyard to his Extra Deck to Special Summon Jack Jaguar linked to Sunlight Wolf and used Sunlight Wolf’s effect to return a Gazelle to his hand. He attacked with Jack Jaguar and Sunlight Wolf to drop Mondlak down to 4400 Life Points. He Set a card to his back row before passing his turn.
Mondlak drew Machine Duplication and then banished Core from his Graveyard to Special Summon Cyber Dragon Nachster from his Deck. He used its effect to Special Summon Cyber Dragon Nova from his Graveyard and then used Nova as an Xyz Material to Summon Cyber Dragon Infinty. He activated Machine Duplication next, targeting Nachster, Special Summoning another Cyber Dragon from his Deck in Attack Position. Next, he Tribute Summoned a Cyber Dragon from his hand by Tributing Nachster. He used Infinity’s effect to try to attach Jack Jaguar as an Xyz Material, but Rai Chained Salamangreat Rage and sent it to the Graveyard. Mondlak negated Rage with Infinity’s effect, but Rai Special Summoned Gazelle to his field linked to Sunlight Wolf. He Special Summoned Sea Archiver from his Graveyard and used Wolf’s effect to add a card to his hand. Next, Mondlak combined his 2 Cyber Dragons to Xyz Summon Nova, and used its effect to Special Summon a Cyber Dragon from his Graveyard. He attacked Sunlight Wolf with Nova, and then during the Damage Step, he activated Nova’s effect and banished Cyber Dragon from his field to double Nova’s ATK to 4200! Nova’s attack over the Sunlight Wolf with 1800 ATK wiped out Rai’s remaining 1300 Life Points!

Duel Two
Rai chose for Mondlak to go first in Duel 2.
Mondlak opened up Duel 2 with Cyber Dragon Core, Galaxy Soldier, Cyber Emergency, PSY-Framegear Gamma, and Cybernetic Overflow.
He activated Cyber Emergency to add Cyber Dragon Herz from his Deck to his hand and then Normal Summoned Core. He activated Core’s effect, but lost out to Rai’s Effect Veiler. Next, Mondlak discarded Herz from his hand to Special Summon Galaxy Soldier. He activated the effects of Galaxy Soldier and Herz, but Rai used Effect Veiler to negate the effect of Galaxy Soldier. Rai added Cyber Dragon to his hand with the effect of Herz and then Link Summoned PSY-Framelord Lambda. He Set Cybernetic Overflow before passing.
Rai Summoned Jack Jaguar and attacked Lambda to destroy it. Then he Link Summoned Balelynx in Main Phase 2 and Special Summoned Gazelle from his hand when Jack Jaguar went to the Graveyard. He used Gazelle’s effect to send Falco from his Deck to his Graveyard and then activated Salamangreat Sanctuary from his hand. He used Balelynx as a Link Material to Summon another Balelynx thanks to Sanctuary, and then Special Summoned Jack Jaguar from his Graveyard linked to Balelynx. Next, he activated Falco’s effect to Special Summon it by returning Gazelle to his hand. He sent Jack Jaguar and Balelynx to the Graveyard to Link Summon Sunlight Wolf and then activated Will of the Salamangreat. He used its effect to Special Summon Jack Jaguar from his Graveyard and then combined Jack Jaguar and Falco to Xyz Summon Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir. In the End Phase, Mondlak activated Overflow and banished Herz from his Graveyard to destroy Number 41.
Mondlak drew another Gamma and then banished Core from his Graveyard to Special Summon Herz from his Deck. He sent it to the Graveyard along with Sunlight Wolf to Special Summon Chimeratech Megafleet Dragon. He used Herz’s effect to add a Cyber Dragon from his Deck to his hand and Rai used Gazelle’s effect to send Spinny to his Graveyard. Next, Mondlak attacked Gazelle with Megafleet to try to destroy Gazelle, and Rai protected it by banishing a Balelynx from his Graveyard. Mondlak Tributed his Chimeratech to Set a Cyber Dragon and then ended his turn.
Rai used the effect of the Falco in his Graveyard to Special Summon it by returning Gazelle to his hand and then Normal Summoned Gazelle and used its effect to send Salamangreat Foxy from his Deck to his Graveyard. He used Spinny’s effect to Special Summon it from the Graveyard next, and then Xyz Summoned Salamangreat Miragestallio. He detached an Xyz Material from it to activate its effect and Special Summon Spinny, and then sent Miragestellio and Spinny to the Graveyard to Link Summon Sunlight Wolf. He used Miragestellio’s effect to return Cyber Dragon to Mondlak’s hand. Rai activated Jack Jaguar’s effect, and Mondlak Chained the effect of Gamma from his hand to negate the activation of the effect and Special Summon Gamma from his hand along with a Driver from his Deck. Rai used Will of the Salamangreat to Special Summon Jack Jaguar to his hand next, and then used Sunlight Wolf’s effect to add a Gazelle from his Graveyard to his hand. Jack Jaguar attacked Gamma and inflicted piercing damage, and then in Main Phase 2, Rai Xyz Summoned Abyss Dweller. Driver was banished in the End Phase.
Mondlak drew a card and then had 3 copies of Cyber Dragon and a Gamma in his hand. He Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and then sent it to the Graveyard along with Sunlight Wolf to Summon Chimeratech Megafleet Dragon. He attacked Abyss Dweller, and Rai activated Dweller’s effect before sending it to the Graveyard.
Rai Summoned Salamangreat Gazelle and used its effect to send Salamangreat Rage to his Graveyard. Mondlak conceded, realizing he was defeated.
Duel Three
Rai started off Duel 3 by discarding Sea Archiver to activate Cynet Mining, but lost out to Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Next, he Summoned Salamangreat Foxy and activated its effect, but didn’t excavate a Salamangreat card! He sent Foxy to the Graveyard to Link Summon Salamangreat Balelynx and used Balelynx’s effect to add Sanctuary to his hand. He activated Sanctuary and then used it to send Balelynx to his Graveyard and Link Summon another one. He Special Summoned Spinny and Sea Archiver next, and then Xyz Summoned Miragestallio. He used its effect to Special Summon Gazelle from his Deck and then sent 2 monsters to the Graveyard to Link Summon Sunlight Wolf. He returned Gazelle to his hand to Special Summon Falco linked to Sunlight Wolf and used Sunlight Wolf’s effect to return Spinny to his hand.
Mondlak drew a card and then had Foolish Burial, Cyber Dragon Nachster, Cyber Dragon Herz, Cyber Emergency, and Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring in his hand. He activated Foolish Burial to send Herz to the Graveyard and then used Herz’s effect to add a Cyber Dragon to his hand. He tried using Cyber Emergency next, but lost out to Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. He Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and sent it to the Graveyard along with Sunlight Wolf to Special Summon Chimeratech Megafleet Dragon, then Normal Summoned Nachster. He used its effect to Special Summon Cyber Dragon from his Graveyard in Attack Position and then attacked Gazelle with Cyber Dragon. Rai protected it by banishing a Balelynx from his Graveyard, and then Chimeratech attacked and destroyed Gazelle. Mondlak Link Summoned Cyber Dragon Sieger in Main Phase 2.
Rai Special Summoned Foxy from his Graveyard by discarding Jack Jaguar and then sent it to his Graveyard to Link Summon Balelynx. Next, he discarded Spinny to increase Falco’s ATK by 500 and used Spinny’s effect to Special Summon it. He Special Summoned Sea Archiver next, and then combined Sea Archiver with Spinny to Summon Miragestallio. He activated its effect, but lost out to Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. He combined Miragestallio with Balelynx to Summon Sunlight Wolf and used Miragestallio’s effect to return Sieger to the Extra Deck. Next, he Special Summoned Jack Jaguar from his Graveyard linked to Sunlight Wolf and used Sunlight Wolf’s effect to add Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to his hand. He sent Falco and Sunlight Wolf to the Graveyard to Link Summon Salamangreat Heatleo and then used Heatleo as a Link Material to Summon another copy. He used its effect to reduce Cyber Dragon’s ATK to 300 and then Special Summoned Falco to his field by returning Jack Jaguar to his hand. He Normal Summoned Jack Jaguar and then attacked Cyber Dragon with Heatleo to destroy it. Direct attacks from Jack Jaguar and Falco dropped Mondlak down to 3000 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Rai Xyz Summoned Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir in Defense Position.
Mondlak drew a card and conceded. With only Nachster and Herz in his hand, he was unable to break through Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir.
Shawn Rai advances with a 7-0 record using his Salamangreat Deck, but Mondlak remains in the tournament with a 6-1 record using his Cyber Dragon Deck!
