QQ: How Are You Handling Nibiru?

October 5th, 2019

QQ stands for Quick Questions! The 2019 Gold Sarcophagus Tins had a truly powerful card: Nibiru, the Primal Being! With the ability to completely shut down a combo Deck in its tracks, Nibiru is both loved and feared by Duelists. Now that Nibiru has been out for a month, how are Duelists adapting to the big rock?

David Golightly

“I don’t have any problems with the card. Sometimes I do Summon five or more monsters, and if they got it, they got it. Sometimes I will play around it though. If I win game one and they make me go first, I know they have it. As a whole I like it, it keeps other combo decks in check.”

Zach Butler

“Every Deck has adapted to Summon monster effect negation in their first five summons. Because of that, I don’t think it’s as strong.”

Ethan Schwarten

“People are playing cards such as Knightmare Corruptor Iblee, to make it so your opponent can’t Special Summon. And they’re making Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess as the fifth summon so if the opponent activates Nibiru in hand you can negate it. I play a combo deck, so especially if they make me go first I make Apollousa so I don’t get punished. Otherwise, you see a lot of people stopping at the fourth summon. It’s more resource management, so people don’t dump their entire hand right away.”

Bernie Bernal

“Honestly it affects me more as an idea than as a card. It makes going first much weaker. Fifty percent of the players are going first and fifty percent are going second. Beforer Nibiru, it was nearly 100 percent going first. My deck wants to go second, but now with Nibiru it’s not so hot. Just the presence of Nibiru changes up the meta a lot. You don’t even have to run it.”

Steven Darling

“I’m not summoning five monsters in a turn. I’m not summoning any monsters.”

-Steven Darling, local sadist (using his Destiny Board Deck)
