Round 1: Carl Edouard Manigat vs. Stephen Neil Muldoon Marquez

February 15th, 2020

Welcome to Round 1! There’s about 70 players in the tournament right now, but once the players with Round 1 byes enter the fray, we’ll have 243 players in the last Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational in North America! For Round 1’s Feature Match, we’re looking at Table 6 where Carl Manigat from Long Island, New York – who placed 2nd in last year’s UDS Invitational in Las Vegas – has a Shaddoll Invoked Deck powered up with cards from the recently released Structure Deck: Shaddoll Showdown. He’s taking on Stephen Neil Muldoon Marquez from Phoenix, Arizona and his Lunalight Deck. This matchup will come down to whether or not Muldoon Marquez can make his plays before Manigat can bring El Shaddoll Winda to the field. For the first time this weekend, it’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Manigat won the roll and elected to go first. He started with a hand of Shaddoll Beast, 2 copies of Magical Meltdown, El Shaddoll Fusion, and Aleister the Invoker. He Normal Summoned Aleister the Invoker and used its effect to add Invocation from his Deck to his hand. He then activated Magical Meltdown and added another Aleister the Invoker to his hand, which Muldoon Marquez responded with Droll & Lock Bird to stop any more drawing or searching this turn. Manigat Set El Shaddoll Fusion and passed.

Muldoon Marquez activated Danger! Nessie! from his hand and Manigat chained El Shaddoll Fusion, sending Aleister the Invoker from the field and Shaddoll Beast from his hand to Fusion Summon El Shaddoll Winda. Muldoon Marquez’s Luna Light Perfume was discarded and Danger! Nessie! was Special Summoned. Muldoon Marquez then activated Fire Formation – Tenki to add Lunalight Yellow Marten from his Deck to his hand. Muldoon Marquez then Normal Summoned Lunalight Emerald Bird and used its effect, discarding Lunalight Yellow Marten to draw a card. Lunalight Yellow Marten’s effect let Muldoon Marquez add Lunalight Serenade Dance from his Deck to his hand. Under Winda’s effect, Muldoon Marquez was unable to continue Special Summoning monsters so he was forced to pass.

Manigat Normal Summoned Aleister the Invoker and used its effect to add another Invocation from his Deck to his hand. Meltdown was replaced with a second copy to add another Aleister the Invoker to Manigat’s hand. Allure of Darkness was next, with Manigat drawing 2 cards and banishing Aleister the Invoker. Winda and Aleister the Invoker were sent to the GY to Link Summon Cross-Sheep. Winda’s Graveyard effect let Manigat add the El Shaddoll Fusion in his Graveyard back to his hand. Invocation was next, fusing Performage Trick Clown and Reeshaddoll Wendi from his hand to Fusion Summon El Shaddoll Construct. He used multiple effects in the next chain, Special Summoning Wendi from the Graveyard with Cross-Sheep’s effect, then Special Summoning Naelshaddoll Ariel from the Deck face-down with Wendi’s effect, Construct’s effect sending Shaddoll Beast from the Deck to the Graveyard and Trick Clown being Special Summoned from the Graveyard from its own effect. Beast’s effect let Manigat draw a card. Trick Clown and Cross-Sheep went to the Graveyard to Link Summon Borrelsword Dragon.   Invocation was next, Fusion Summoning Invoked Mechaba. That was enough for Muldoon Marquez who conceded, sending the match to the second Duel.

Duel 2

Muldoon Marquez elected to go first. He passed without making any plays.

Manigat started with a hand of Evenly Matched, Invocation, Allure of Darkness, Shaddoll Squamata, Naelshaddoll Ariel and Shaddoll Fusion. He activated Shaddoll Fusion, sending Ariel and Squamata from his hand to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon El Shaddoll Winda. He used Squamata’s effect to send Shaddoll Hedgehog to the Graveyard, and its effect let Manigat add Reeshaddoll Wendi from his Deck to his hand. Winda attacked for 2200. He Set Wendi and passed.

Muldoon Marquez activated Danger!? Jackelope?’s effect in his hand with Manigat hitting Luna Light Perfume. Danger!? Jackelope? hit the field and Muldoon Marquez drew a card. Luna Light Perfume’s effect let Muldoon Marquez discard PSY-Frame Driver to add Lunalight Kaleido Chick from his Deck to his hand. He Normal Summoned Lunalight Kaleido Chick and used its effect to send Lunalight Yellow Marten from his Deck to his Graveyard. Muldoon Marquez passed.

Manigat drew Shaddoll Beast. He activated Allure of Darkness, drawing Shaddoll Dragon and another Beast, banishing Dragon. He Flip Summoned Wendi and used it and Winda to Link Summon Cross-Sheep. Winda’s Graveyard effect added back Shaddoll Fusion from the Graveyard. He activated Shaddoll Fusion, sending Shaddoll Beast and Hedgehog from his hand to the Graveyard to Special Summon another El Shaddoll Winda. He activated 3 effects, Special Summoning Squamata with Cross-Sheep’s effect, drawing a card with Beast’s effect and adding Wendi from his Deck to his hand with Hedgehog’s effect. Manigat had all of his monsters attack Muldoon Marquez’s, leaving Muldoon Marquez at 4700 LP.

Muldoon Marquez activated Foolish Burial Goods, sending Luna Light Perfume from his Deck to his hand. Luna Light Perfume’s Graveyard effect was next. It was banished and Muldoon Marquez discarded Danger! Mothman! to add Lunalight Kaleido Chick from his Deck to his hand. Muldoon Marquez activated Mothman’s effect, with both players drawing and discarding a card. Muldoon Marquez discarded PSY-Frame Driver while Manigat discarded Squamata whose effect sent Beast from the Deck to the Graveyard whose effect gave Manigat another card. Muldoon Marquez activated Fire Formation – Tenki next to add Lunalight Tiger from his Deck to his hand. Lunalight Kaleido Chick was Normal Summoned and its effect sent Lunalight Emerald Bird from his Deck to his hand. He then activated Tiger and used its effect to Special Summon Lunalight Yellow Marten. Kaleido Chick attacked over Cross-Sheep. Muldoon Marquez was still stuck under WInda’s effect so he passed.

Manigat Flip Summoned Wendi and used its effect to Special Summon Squamata from the Deck face-down. He then Normal Summoned a Wendi from his hand, and Manigat went into the Battle Phase and all of the monsters attacked, leaving Muldoon Marquez at 1400 LP.

Muldoon Marquez Normal Summoned Danger! Mothman!. He attacked over Wendi but there was nothing left to do, he extended the handshake!

Manigat takes the win in convincing fashion, using El Shaddoll Winda’s effect to lock down the Duel!
