The New Forbidden & Limited List Shakes Up YCS Hartford!

May 28th, 2022

A new Forbidden & Limited List for the Advanced Format just took effect on May 17th, 2022, and it’s having a major impact on the Decks Duelists are using this weekend. Take a look at some of the big changes that took effect 11 days ago and see what it means for YCS Hartford!

Three cards were Forbidden from the Advanced Format on May 17th, and all three of those cards were popular cards in many Duelists’ Decks. Those three cards are Mecha Phantom Beast Auroradon, Prank-Kids Meow-Meow-Mu, and Predaplant Verte Anaconda. The absence of Mecha Phantom Beast Auroradon from the game hinders combo-oriented Decks that used to rely on it, while Meow-Meow-Mu’s absence deals a heavy blow to Prank-Kids Decks. Finally, with Predaplant Verte Anaconda added to the Forbidden List, it’s going to be a lot harder to access the effects of Fusion Spells like Fusion Destiny and Red-Eyes Fusion, and therefore tougher to Summon threatening Fusion Monsters like Destiny HERO – Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer and Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon. This weekend, we’ll see how strategies adapt to handle the loss of these cards.

Additional changes to the Forbidden & Limited List will also affect how Duelists build their Decks for this weekend. Jet Synchron and Performapal Monkeyboard were removed from the Forbidden List and added to the Limited List, enhancing Synchro and Pendulum-based strategies. Red Rose Dragon, Crystron Halqifibrax, and Shooting Riser Dragon all became newly Limited too, potentially hindering strategies that relied on those cards. Several changes to the Semi-Limited List, and the removal of certain cards from the Forbidden & Limited List entirely are also anticipated to have a minor impact this weekend. You can review all of those changes here.

Perhaps most exciting for some Duelists, three classic cards that were Forbidden for many years have now returned to the Advanced Format as Limited cards. Yata-Garasu, Change of Heart, and Time Seal are once again legal to use, all with their original effects. While many Duelists are excited to use some or all of these ancient cards, others are skeptical that they have the power necessary to keep up with the pace of modern competitive Dueling.

The May 17th, 2022 Forbidden & Limited List brought big changes to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME, and YCS Hartford is the first YCS event for which this new Forbidden & Limited List is in effect. That means Duelists everywhere will be looking at the results of this event in order to get a better understanding of how the latest Forbidden & Limited List is shaping the Advanced Format.
