Round 11 Feature Match: Michael Makela vs. Vladis Baranovski

Michael Makela from Racine, Wisconsin and Vladis Baranovskis from Cork, Ireland are both currently 8-2 at YCS Minneapolis. Makela is using a Spright Deck that uses the new Bystial monsters from Darkwing Blast, while Baranovskis is using a Tearlaments Deck that integrates the Scareclaw strategy. Both have done well in the tournament so far, but they each need a victory in this Match in order to have a shot at taking a spot in the Top 32. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Makela opened up Duel 1 with Triple Tactics Talents, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Spright Blue, and 2 copies of Nimble Beaver.

Michael Makela

He Summoned a Beaver and used its effect to Special Summon Nimble Angler from his Deck. Next, he combined the two monsters to Xyz Summon Gigantic Spright and used its effect to Special Summon Swap Frog from his Deck. He used Swap Frog’s effect to send a Swap Frog from his Deck to his Graveyard and then Special Summoned Spright Blue from his hand. He used its effect to add Spright Jet to his hand and then Special Summoned Jet. He used Jet’s effect to add Spright Smashers to his hand and then sent Gigantic Spright and Blue to the Graveyard to Link Summon Spright Elf. Next, he used his Elf’s effect to Special Summon Swap Frog from his Graveyard and Xyz Summoned Toadally Awesome linked to Spright Elf. He Set the Smashers and then ended his turn.

Baranovskis activated Terraforming to add Primeval Planet Perlereino to his hand and activated it to add Tearlaments Havnis from his Deck to his Graveyard. He Set a monster and then entered his Battle Phase. He activated Super Polymerization by discarding Reinoheart from his hand and fused his face-down Reinoheart with Toadally Awesome to Summon Tearlaments Kitkallos. He activated the effects of Reinoheart and Kitkallos, and Makela used his Toadally Awesome’s effect to return Swap Frog to his hand. Baranovskis used Kitkallos to search for Tearlaments Scheiren from his Deck and add it to his hand, and used Reinoheart’s effect to Special Summon it from his Graveyard and send Havnis from his hand to his Graveyard. Next, Baranovskis activated the effects of the Havnis in his Graveyard and his on-field Reinoheart. He sent Tearlaments Merrli to the Graveyard with Reinoheart and then used Havnis’s effect to Fusion Summon Tearlaments Kaleido-Heart. He used Kaleido-Heart’s effect targeting Spright Elf and Makela Chained Spright Smashers. He banished Gigantic Spright from his Graveyard to banish his Elf and Baranovskis’s Kaleido-Heart from the field. Kitkallos and Reinoheart attacked directly, dropping Makela down to 3200 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Baranovskis activated Primeval Planet Reichphobia and lost out on its effect to Makela’s Ash Blossom. Baranovskis activated Foolish Burial Goods next, sending Tearlaments Sulliek from his Deck to his Graveyard. He used Sulliek’s effect to add Tearlaments Merrli to his hand and then used the effect of the Scheiren in his hand to Special Summon it and send Merrli to the Graveyard. He sent the top 3 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard and then used a Merrli’s effect to fuse it with the Scheiren on his field and Summon Garura, Wings of Resonant Life. He then used Kitkallos’s effect to Special Summon Merrli from his Graveyard and send Kitkallos to his Graveyard. He sent the top 8 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard and then used a Scheiren’s effect to fuse it from his Graveyard with the Kitkallos in his Graveyard and Summon Tearlaments Rulkallos. Next, he sent Garura and Merrli to the Graveyard to Link Summon Spright Elf and draw a card with Garura’s effect.

Makela Summoned Nimble Beaver but didn’t activate its effect, and Baranovskis used his Spright Elf’s effect to Special Summon Merrli. He tried using Merrli’s effect, but lost out to Ash Blossom. Next, Makela Special Summoned Spright Jet and used its effect to add Spright Starter to his hand. He then used Triple Tactics Talents to take control of Tearlaments Rulkallos and sent Jet and Beaver to the Graveyard to Link Summon Spright Elf. He used Elf’s effect to Special Summon Toadally Awesome and then used Spright Starter to Special Summon Spright Blue from his Deck. He lost 1100 Life Points and then added Spright Red to his hand with Blue’s effect. Next, he Special Summoned Spright Red from his hand and combined Spright Blue and Spright Elf to Summon Gigantic Spright. He used its effect to Special Summon Spright Carrot from his Deck and then entered his Battle Phase. He attacked Merrli with Rulkallos to destroy it and then attacked Spright Elf with Toadally Awesome to destroy it. Gigantic Spright attacked and destroyed Reinoheart, and then Carrot attacked directly to drop Baranovskis down to 4800 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Makela Link Summoned Spright Elf and passed his turn.

Baranovskis drew a card and conceded.

Duel Two

Baranovskis started off Duel 2 by activating Perlereino to add Tearlaments Reinoheart to his hand and then used the effect of the Scheiren in his hand to Special Summon it and send Reinoheart to the Graveyard. He sent the top 3 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard and used his Reinoheart’s effect to Special Summon it and send Tearlaments Scream to the Graveyard. He added Sulliek to his hand with Scream’s effect and sent Havnis to his Graveyard with Reinoheart’s effect. He used Havnis’s effect to fuse it with the Scheiren on his field and Summon Kitkallos. He used Kitkallos’s effect to add Tearlaments Cryme to his hand and then activated the effect of Visas Starfrost to Special Summon it by destroying Kitkallos. He activated Kitkallos’s effect and Makela conceded. Makela had a hand of Spright Red, Spright Carrot, Spright Blue, Spright Jet, and Kashtira Fenrir, and didn’t think he’d be able to win.

The Match pressed on to a third and final Duel that will determine which Duelist makes the Top 32 cut!

Duel Three

Makela opened up Duel 3 with Spright Blue, Artifact Scythe, Dimension Shifter, Bystial Magnamhut, and Nimble Beaver. He Summoned the Beaver and activated its effect. Baranovskis Chained the effect of PSY-Framegear Gamma, and Makela Chained Dimension Shifter’s effect from his hand. The Beaver was banished from the Duel and Baranovskis Summoned Gamma alongside PSY-Frame Driver. Makela Special Summoned Magnamhut from his hand by banishing Dimension Shifter from his Graveyard and activated its effect. He added Bystial Druiswurm to his hand in the End Phase.

Baranovskis activated Primeval Planet Reichphobia and used its effect to add Scareclaw Reichheart to his hand.

Vladis Baranovski

He Normal Summoned it and used its effect to add Scareclaw Arrival to his hand. Next, he activated Tearlaments Grief to Special Summon Visas Starfrost from his Deck and banished his on-field Reichheart. Next, he used Scheiren’s effect to Special Summon it by banishing PSY-Framegear Gamma from his hand. He Tuned Scheiren with Visas to Synchro Summon Baronne de Fleur and used its effect to destroy Magnamhut. He attacked directly for 3000 points of damage and then Set a card before passing his turn.

Makela Normal Summoned Swap Frog and then Special Summoned Spright Blue from his hand. He activated its effect and added Spright Jet from his Deck to his hand. He Special Summoned it and used its effect to add Spright Starter to his hand. Next, he sent Blue and Jet to the Graveyard to Link Summon Spright Sprind. He combined Sprind with Swap Frog to Xyz Summon Gigantic Spright with 3200 ATK and then attacked Baronne de Fleur to destroy it in battle. In Main Phase 2, he used Gigantic Spright’s effect to Special Summon a Swap Frog from his Deck. He then used Spright Starter to Special Summon Spright Red and lost 1200 Life Points. He Link Summoned Spright Elf and used its effect to Special Summon Swap Frog. He Xyz Summon Toadally Awesome linked to Spright Elf and then Set Artifact Scythe before passing.

Baranovskis Set a monster and then entered his Battle Phase. He flipped Super Polymerization by discarding Scareclaw Arrival and fused his face-down Havnis with Toadally Awesome. He activated the effects of Kitkallos and Havnis, and Makela Chained the effect of the Druiswurm in his hand to banish Havnis and Special Summon Druiswurm. Baranovskis added Reinoheart to his hand with Kitkallos and then attacked Elf with Kitkallos to destroy it. In Main Phase 2, Baranovskis used Kitkallos’s effect targeting Kitkallos. He sent it to the Graveyard and Special Summoned Reinoheart from his hand. He sent the top 5 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard with Kitkallos’s effect and sent Scheiren to his Graveyard with Reinoheart’s effect. He used the effects of the Merrli and Scheiren he sent to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon Kitkallos and Rulkallos from his Extra Deck.

Makela drew Spright Jet and Normal Summoned it. He sent it to the Graveyard along with Druiswurm to Summon Spright Elf and used the Druiswurm’s effect to send Rulkallos to the Graveyard. Baranovskis used Rulkallos’s effect to Special Summon it back, and Makela used Elf’s effect to Special Summon Spright Sprind. He combined Sprind with Elf to Summon Gigantic Spright and then attacked Rulkallos to destroy it. Next, he used Gigantic Spright’s effect to Special Summon Blue, used Blue’s effect to get a Jet that he Special Summoned, and used Jet to add Starter to his hand. He Link Summoned Spright Elf next and then used Starter to Special Summon a Blue and give up 1100 Life Points. He Link Summoned I:P Masquerena next and then passed his turn.

Baranovskis activated the effect of Kitkallos and Makela Chained his Elf’s effect to Special Summon Toadally Awesome. Baranovskis swapped his Kitkallos with Rulkallos and then tried using Kitkallos’s effect, which was negated by Toadally Awesome. Makela switched Reinoheart into Attack Position and then tried to enter his Battle Phase; but Makela activated the effect of I:P Masquerena in his Main Phase. He sent his two monsters to the Graveyard to Link Summon Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avramax. Baranovskis passed his turn.

Makela drew Pot of Prosperity and banished 3 cards from his Extra Deck to activate it. He revealed Spright Starter, Pot of Prosperity, and Bystial Druiswurm from his Deck and added the Druiswurm to his hand. He Normal Summoned Swap Frog and then attacked Rulkallos with Avramax to destroy it. Next, he Special Summoned Druiswurm by banishing Kitkallos from the Graveyard and attacked over Reinoheart with it. Swap Frog attacked directly and Makela used his Swap Frog to return Druiswurm to his hand.

Baranovskis activated Instant Fusion and paid 1000 Life Points to Summon Kitkallos. He used its effect to add Sulliek to his hand and then used Kitkallos’s other effect targeting itself. He Special Summoned Reinoheart from his Graveyard and then sent 5 cards from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard and sent a Scheiren to his Graveyard. Makela used the effects of Scheiren and Havnis, and Makela Chained Druiswurm to banish Scheiren. Baranovskis Fusion Summoned Predaplant Dragostapelia with the effect of Havnis and then Link Summoned Dharc the Dark Charmer, Gloomy. He used its effect to Special Summon Spright Blue and then Link Summoned Spright Sprind. He used Sprind’s effect to send Merrli to his Graveyard and then used Merrli’s effect to fuse it with the Reinoheart and Kitkallos in his Graveyard and Summon Kaleido-Heart. He used Kaleido-Heart’s effect to return Druiswurm to Makela’s Deck and then Set a card.

Makela attacked Spright Sprind with Avramax and Baranovskis flipped Sulliek. He sent Sprind to the Graveyard to negate the effect of Swap Frog and then Avramax attacked and destroyed Kaleido-Heart. Swap Frog attacked directly. Makela Summoned Beaver next and used its effect to Special Summon another. He Xyz Summoned Number 29: Mannequin Cat and returned Swap Frog to his hand.

Baranovskis drew a card and time in the round was called! Baranovskis was up 3200 Life Points to 1800 Life Points and was declared the winner!

After a very close Match, Vladis Baranovskis finishes the Swiss Rounds with a 9-2 record and makes it into the Top 32 with his Tearlaments Scareclaw Deck!
