Round 3 Feature Match: Dominic Couch vs. Brodderic DeBoer

October 22nd, 2022

YCS Champion Dominic Couch from Richmond Hill, Georgia is currently 3-0 in the tournament with his Tearlaments Bystial Deck. Couch’s Deck is packed with new cards from Darkwing Blast, including Branded Beast, Blazing Cartesia, the Virtuous, Spright Sprind, Tearlaments Rulkallos, and a bunch of the new Bystial monsters. Brodderic DeBoer from Denver, Colorado is competing in his second-ever YCS and using a drastically different strategy: He’s piloting a Deck built around Morphtronic Telefon that aims to create an infinite damage loop by using Toon Cannon Soldier. DeBoer’s Deck uses Vernusylph of the Misting Seedlings from Darkwing Blast to give him an additional way to Special Summon Morphtronic Telefon from his Graveyard. DeBoer won the die roll and chose to go first, which could allow him to steal a win before Couch even takes a turn. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

DeBoer started off Duel 1 by activating Emergency Teleport to Special Summon Noh-P.U.N.K. Ze Amin from his Deck.

Brodderic DeBoer

He used its effect and paid 600 Life Points to add Noh-P.U.N.K. Ogre Dance to his hand and used Ogre Dance’s effect to add Noh-P.U.N.K. Deer Note to his hand. Next, he used the effect of Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests by discarding Deer Note. He sent Morphtronic Telefon from his Deck to his Graveyard with its effect and then Special Summoned Deer Note. Next, he activated the effect of Vernusylph of the Flowering Field by discarding it along with Noh-P.U.N.K. Foxy Tune. He returned Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests to his hand and Special Summoned Morphtronic Telefon. Next, he used his two Noh-P.U.N.K. monsters in a Link Summon to bring out Aussa the Earth Charmer, Immovable and used Deer Note’s effect to Special Summon Ze Amin. He used his Telefon’s effect next, and DeBoer rolled a die with its effect. He rolled a 4, excavating Small World, Foolish Burial, Called by the Grave, and Effect Veiler from the top of his Deck. He rearranged them and put them back on top. Next, he Normal Summoned Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests and used all of his monsters to Link Summon Saryuja Skull Dread. He drew 4 cards, then placed 3 cards from his hand to the bottom of his Deck. Next, he used Small World to banish Effect Veiler from his hand and then Telefon from his Deck. He added Gizmek Naganaki, the Sunrise Signaler to his hand. He Special Summoned it from his hand with the effect of Saryuja Skull Dread. He wanted to use its effect, but couldn’t when Couch reminded him that it’s a LIGHT monster and DeBoer was locked into only using the effects of EARTH monsters due to the effects of his Vernusylph monsters! He was forced to just pass his turn instead! In the End Phase, Couch Special Summoned Bystial Magnamhut and used its effect to add Bystial Lubellion from his Deck to his hand.

Couch drew Bystial Lubellion and added it to his hand of Tearlaments Merrli, Tearlaments Scheiren, Primeval Planet Perlereino, and Triple Tactics Talents. He discarded Lubellion to add Magnamhut to his hand and then Tributed Magnamhut to Special Summon Lubellion linked to Skull Dread. This caused Skull Dread’s effect to trigger and increase Lubellion’s ATK. Then, Couch was able to use Triple Tactics Talents to take control of Saryuja Skull Dread. He used Skull Dread’s effect to Special Summon another Lubellion from his hand and then Special Summoned Bystial Magnamhut from his hand. Attacks from all of Couch’s monsters wiped out all of DeBoer’s Life Points!

A misstep by Brodderic DeBoer causes him to end his first turn having little with which to defend him. Dominic Couch capitalizes on the opening to take victory on his first turn!

Duel Two

DeBoer Normal Summoned Morphtronic Telefon and activated Machine Duplication to Special Summon 2 more copies – one in Defense Position and one in Attack Position. He used the Defense Position Telefon’s effect to roll a die and rolled a 3. He excavated 3 cards and put them all on the bottom of his Deck. Next, he used the Defense Position Telefon as a Link Material to Summon Linkuriboh and used the effect of the Telefon in Attack Position. He rolled a 6 and Special Summoned Telefon from his Graveyard and gained 600 Life Points. He Link Summoned Relinquished Anima. Next, he used Telefon’s effect and rolled a 3 to Special Summon Telefon. He combined Linkuriboh and Telefon to Link Summon Aussa. Next, he used a Telefon’s effect to Special Summon another Telefon from his Graveyard and then he Link Summoned another Linkuriboh. He then used another Telefon effect to Special Summon another Telefon from the Graveyard. He Link Summoned Saryuja Skull Dread next, drawing 4 cards and putting 3 on the bottom of his Deck with its effect. Next, he used Emergency Teleport to Special Summon Ze Amin and used Ze Amin’s effect to add Foxy Tune to his hand. He used the effect of Saryuja Skull Dread to Special Summon Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests and then used another Telefon effect to Special Summon a Telefon from his Graveyard in Defense Position. He used the Defense Position Telefon’s effect and rolled a 4 to excavate the top 4 cards of his Deck and put them on the bottom. Next, he used 4 more monsters to Link Summon Saryuja Skull Dread and used its effect to draw 4 more cards and return 3 cards to the bottom. He then used another Telefon’s effect to Special Summon a Telefon from his Graveyard in Attack Position and sent a Telefon to his Graveyard to Link Summon Relinquished Anima. Next, he used the effect of Vernusylph of the Flowering Field to return Saryuja Skull Dread back to the Extra Deck. He used his Telefon’s effect to Special Summon another Telefon from his Graveyard and then activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests. He Link Summoned Saryuja Skull Dread once again by sending 4 monsters to the Graveyard and then drew 4 cards and returned 3 to the bottom of his Deck. He used the effect of Saryuja Skull Dread to Special Summon Toon Cannon Soldier and then used Saryuja Skull Dread and a Telefon as Link Materials to Summon Reprodocus and change Toon Cannon Soldier’s Attribute to EARTH so that it could use its effect. Couch then conceded, with DeBoer having pulled off the combo. DeBoer had set up a loop where he could wipe out all of Couch’s Life Points with Toon Cannon Soldier. He was able to use a Telefon’s effect to Special Summon Telefon from his Graveyard, launch the used Telefon for 500 points of damage with Toon Cannon Soldier, Special Summon Telefon from his Graveyard with the effect of one of his other Telefons, and repeat the process until Couch’s Life Points were down to zero! Nothing in Couch’s hand could stop DeBoer’s combo!

Brodderic DeBoer wins Duel 2 on the very first turn after using Machine Duplication on Morphtronic Telefon!

Duel Three

Couch opened up Duel 3 with Triple Tactics Talent, Primeval Planet Perlereino, The Bystial Lubellion, and 2 copies of Tearlaments Scheiren.

Dominic Couch

He activated Scheiren’s effect and sent a Scheiren from his hand to his Graveyard to Special Summon it. He sent 3 cards from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard and then used the in-Graveyard Scheiren’s effect to fuse it with the on-field Scheiren and Summon Tearlaments Kitkallos. He used Kitkallos’s effect to add Tearlaments Cryme to his hand. Next, he used the effect of The Bystial Lubellion to add Bystial Magnamhut to his hand. He banished Bystial Druiswurm from his Graveyard to Special Summon Magnumhut and activated its effect. He then Tributed Magnamhut to Special Summon The Bystial Lubellion from his Graveyard and used its effect to activate Branded Beast from his Deck. He used Kitkallos’s effect to Special Summon Reinoheart and used the effects of Kitkallos and Reinoheart. He sent the top 5 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard, and then sent Havnis from his Deck to his Graveyard. He used the effects of his Merrli, Havnis, and Bystial Saronir. He sent Branded in High Spirits to his Graveyard and Fusion Summoned Tearlaments Rulkallos and Garura, Wings of Resonant Life. He activated Primeval Planet Perlereino and used its effect to add Merrli to his hand. He Normal Summoned Merrli and activated its effect to send the top 3 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard. Next, he Link Summoned Spright Elf by using Garura and Merrli as Link Materials and drew a card with Garura’s effect. He used his Elf’s effect to Special Summon Merrli and then sent Merrli and Reinoheart to his Graveyard to Link Summon Spright Sprind. He Set Tearlaments Cryme and then resolved the effect of his Magnamhut to add a Bystial monster to his hand. Finally, he added Branded in High Spirits from his Graveyard to his hand before play passed to DeBoer.

DeBoer activated One for One by discarding Morphtronic Telefon and Couch used the effect of his Rulkallos to negate it. He sent the Rulkallos to the Graveyard and then Special Summoned it back to his field with its effect. Next, DeBoer used Foolish Burial to send another Telefon from his Deck to his Graveyard and activated Junk Box to try to Special Summon Telefon. Couch Chained the effect of Elf to Summon Merrli. Merrli’s effect sent Scheiren, Havnis, and Tearlaments Sulliek to the Graveyard and Couch activated all three effects! He Fusion Summoned Predaplant Dragostapelia and Tearlaments Kaleido-Heart and added Reinoheart to his hand with Sulliek’s effect. He destroyed Telefon with the effect of Perlereino and then DeBoer activated Toon Table of Contents. He added another Toon Table of Contents to his hand, used it to get a third, and used the third to get a Toon Cannon Soldier. He activated Small World and Couch Chained Tearlaments Cryme to negate the activation. At that point, DeBoer’s only card in his hand was Toon Cannon Soldier, and he offered the handshake.

Dominic Couch takes a 2-1 win over Brodderic DeBoer’s Morphtronic Telefon combo Deck and advances with a 3-0 record!
