Round 8 Feature Match: Johnny Nguyen vs. Anthony Confletti
We’re almost at the end of Day 1 here at YCS Minneapolis! We’ve got Johnny Nguyen from Wichita, KS, playing a pure Runick Deck Destruction strategy! He’s against Anthony Confletti, from Washington, DC, playing Marincess!
Duel 1
Nguyen won the die roll and chose to play first. He opened with Runick Fountain, Runick Golden Droplet, Dark Bribe, Runick Flashing Fire, and Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell. He started with Flashing Fire, which Special Summoned Hugin the Runick Wings. He activated Fountain and set his Trap Cards.
Confletti started with Marincess Springirl. He Link Summoned Marincess Sea Angel, with Springirl sending D.D. Crow from his Deck to the Graveyard, and Sea Angel adding Marincess Dive to his hand. He played Marincess Battle Ocean, then played Dive, and Nguyen flipped Dark Bribe. Confletti sent Sea Angel to destroy Hugin in battle, which returned itself to the Extra Deck. Confletti set a back row card, and Nguyen activated Golden Droplet in the End Phase, and Special Summoned Freki the Runick Fangs. Nguyen tried to draw with Fountain, but Confletti had Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion.
Nguyen drew for his turn: another Golden Droplet. He played it, making Confletti draw a card and banish four cards (including his only Harpie’s Feather Duster!). Fountain then returned three Runicks to his Deck, and he drew Rivalry of Warlords, Cursed Seal, and Golden Droplet. He moved to his Battle Phase, which was skipped thanks to his Runick cards’ effects. He set Rivalry to finish.
Confletti sent Sea Angel to attack Freki, and when Nguyen used Freki’s effect, Confletti flipped Forbidden Droplet! He sent his Set copy of Droplet for its cost, attempting to negate Freki. Nguyen considered flipping Cursed Seal, but opted to let it slide. Freki was negated and destroyed in battle. Confletti set a back row card, and Nguyen used Golden Droplet in the End Phase for a new Freki. Fountain triggered, and he drew a Flashing Fire.
Confletti played Marincess Sea Horse. Nguyen played Flashing Fire to destroy Sea Angel, banishing 2 more cards from Confletti’s Deck. He tried to use Fountain, but Confletti had D.D. Crow to banish his Runick spell. Confletti Link Summoned Marincess Blue Slug. With Battle Ocean, it equipped Sea Angel. He Special Summoned Sea Horse, and Nguyen flipped Rivalry of Warlords. Confletti flipped his third Forbidden Droplet, using the Sea Horse for its cost to negate and weaken Freki. He destroyed Freki in battle.
Nguyen drew Metaverse. He set it and passed.
Confletti moved to his Battle Phase, and Nguyen flipped Metaverse to put Mystic Mine on the board. Confletti knew his Harpie’s Feather Duster was banished already, and decided to concede here! He’d rather save the time in the round rather than try to slowly play through Mystic Mine and Rivalry of Warlords, which he knew he wouldn’t be able to do.
Duel 2
Confletti started with Cynet Mining, discarding another copy of Mining, to get Marincess Pascalus. He used it to Special Summon Marincess Blue Tang, which sent Marincess Basilalima. He used Blue Tang to Link Summon Sea Angel. Blue Tang added Springirl to his hand, and Sea Angel added Dive to his hand. He banished Blue Tang to Special Summon Springirl, and Xyz Summoned Bahamut Shark! Its effect brought Toadally Awesome to the field. He used Sea Angel and Bahamut Shark to play Marincess Coral Anemone, and he Special Summoned Springirl. He used that to play Blue Slug, adding Springirl to his hand. He then used both Link Monsters to play Marincess Coral Triangle, adding Pascalus to his hand with Coral Anemone. Coral Triangle’s effect let him send Pascalus to add Marincess Wave to his hand! He played Dive to Special Summon a Marincess, using it with Coral Triangle to end with end with Marincess Great Bubble Reef! He set one back row card.
Nguyen’s starting hand was Cursed Seal, Metaverse, Runick Tip, Runick Destruction, and Runick Slumber. He drew Demise of the Land. In the Draw Phase, he played Runick Destruction to destroy Confletti’s Set Infinite Impermanence and banish four cards from Confletti’s Deck. Then he played Runick Tip, adding Fountain to his hand and banishing another card from Confletti’s Deck. In Nguyen’s Standby Phase, Great Bubble Reef let Confletti draw a card. Nguyen played Runick Fountain, and Confletti used Toadally Awesome’s effect, tributing itself to negate Fountain and Set it on his own field. Toad’s effect returned Blue Slug to the Extra Deck. Nguyen Set his entire hand.
Confletti drew a card, and Nguyen flipped Metaverse for Mystic Mine once again. Confletti Set a card back row card.
Nguyen drew Fountain and passed.
Confletti passed.
Nguyen drew Skill Drain and Set it.
Confletti passed.
Nguyen drew Runick Dispelling. He set it.
Confletti moved to his Battle Phase, and flipped up Evenly Matched! Nguyen banished three cards, keeping Mystic Mine, Cursed Seal, and Skill Drain.
Nguyen drew Demise of the Land.
Confletti set a card.
Nguyen drew Runick Destruction.
Confletti set another card.
Nguyen drew his third Demise of the Land.
On his turn, Confletti flipped Magic Deflector! Nguyen had to read it, and his surprise was clear! Nguyen flipped Runick Destruction in response, destroying Confletti’s Set Infinite Impermanence. Confletti continued, now under the effects of Magic Deflector, and used Great Bubble Reef to draw another card. He Special Summoned Sea Horse, and Link Summoned Blue Slug. Blue Slug returned Sea Horse to his hand. He Normal Summoned Blue Tang, which sent Pascalus. He activated his other Pascalus in the Graveyard, adding Dive to his hand. He Special Summoned Springirl, and used Great Bubble Reef to Special Summon Coral Triangle. He Link Summoned Worldsea Dragon Zealantis! He activated it, banishing all his monsters and bringing them back in new zones. He used Springirl to Link Summon Sea Angel, then played Dive. Nguyen used Cursed Seal, discarding Demise of the Land to negate Dive. Confletti Link Summoned Coral Anemone, giving him enough damage to wipe out Nguyen’s Life Points! Thanks to Magic Deflector, he was able to attack through Mystic Mine!
Duel 3
Nguyen opened with Runick Smiting Storm, Runick Tip, Solemn Judgment, Cursed Seal, and Terraforming. He played Tip to start, getting Runick Freezing Curses. He played Terraforming, getting Fountain. He played that, then activated Smiting Storm to Special Summon Hugin. He activated Fountain, returning his Runick spells to draw Tip and Golden Droplet. He set his Trap Cards to finish.
Confletti started with Lightning Storm, and Nguyen used Hugin. Confletti moved to his Battle Phase and played Evenly Matched. Nguyen banished Cursed Seal and Solemn Judgment. In Main Phase 2, Confletti played Cynet Mining, discarding Sea Horse to get Pascalus. Nguyen negated it with Freezing Curses. He then used Fountain to draw another Freezing Curses. Confletti Link Summoned Blue Slug, adding Sea Horse back. Nguyen responded with Tip, adding Flashing Fire to his hand. He then used Flashing Fire to destroy Blue Slug.
Nguyen drew Solemn Judgment. He played Golden Droplet to Special Summon Freki, then Fountain let him draw Demise of the Land, Solemn Judgment, and Runick Slumber. He skipped his Battle Phase, and Set both Judgments and Demise.
Confletti played Blue Tang, sending Springirl. He Link Summoned Blue Slug, and added both Blue Tang and Springirl to his hand. He played Sea Horse, and Link Summoned Sea Angel. He added Dive to his hand. He used both Link Monsters to play Coral Anemone, which revived Pascalus. He Link Summoned Coral Triangle, returning Blue Slug to the Extra Deck. He then activated its effect to add Marincess Wave to his hand. He played Dive, bringing Pascalus back. He Special Summoned Springirl, and Xyz Summoned Bahamut Shark! He activated its effect, and Nguyen played Freezing Curses! Confletti responded with Marincess Wave, and Nguyen flipped Solemn Judgment! Nguyen used Fountain to draw Skill Drain. Confletti continued, using Coral Triangle and Bahamut Shark for Great Bubble Reef. It attacked Freki, which banished two cards including a Lightning Storm. In the End Phase, Nguyen played Slumber to Special Summon Munin the Runick Wings. Its effect let him recover 1000 Life Points.
Nguyen drew Dark Bribe, and Confletti used Great Bubble Reef to draw a card. Nguyen Set Dark Bribe and Skill Drain, and Munin gave him 1000 more Life Points.
Confletti used Great Bubble Reef to Special Summon Coral Triangle, and Nguyen flipped Demise of the Land to put Mystic Mine on the field. Confletti used Great Bubble Reef and Coral Triangle to play Marincess Wonder Heart. He used Pascalus to get Wave back to his hand. In the End Phase, Munin gave another 1000 Life Points to Nguyen.
Nguyen drew Golden Droplet, and Munin gained another 1000 Life Points. That put both players tied at 8000 Life Points…
… and the round timer ended at that exact moment! With both players tied in Life Points, and each with one Duel win, that puts this close Match at a draw!
