Round 7 Feature Match: Jake Quinsee Versus Johnny Nguyen
Jake Quinsee has once again traveled from the United Kingdom, competing in another North American YCS! Quinsee’s on Ishizu Tearlaments, teched with Diviner of the Herald and Herald of Orange Light. But his opponent is Johnny Nguyen, also known as YouTube creator aznpersuasion2008, piloting a Runick build that’s been taking down Ishizu Decks all day long! Both of these Duelists are undefeated with a single tie, sitting at Table 10, so this could be a tight Match.
Let’s see how it goes.
Nguyen opted to play second. Quinsee had a hand of Keldo the Sacred Protector, Tearlaments Havnis, Diviner of the Herald, and two copies of Herald of Orange Light. He Normal Summoned Diviner and used its effect to send Agido the Ancient Sentinel to the Graveyard from his Deck. Both players sent five cards to the Graveyard: Nguyen sent Metaverse, Dark Ruler No More, Runick Dispelling, and two copies of Runick Freezing Curses. Quinsee sent Terraforming, Tearlaments Scream, Primeval Planet Perlereino, Tearlaments Reinoheart, and Mudora the Sword Oracle.
Quinsee made a new chain: Reinoheart was Chain Link 1 and Scream was Chain Link 2, getting him Tearlaments Sulliek and discarding it to Special Summon Reinoheart. That meant another chain: Reinoheart’s other effect became Chain Link 1, and Sulliek became Chain Link 2.
Sulliek got him Scheiren, and Reinoheart sent Scheiren to the Graveyard. That triggered Scheiren, and Quinsee Fused it with Reinoheart to Fusion Summon Tearlaments Kitkallos. He activated it to get Tearlaments Cryme from his Deck and he checked his Graveyard: “I’ve just used Scheiren…”
Quinsee continued, activating Scheiren’s effect from hand sending Keldo to the Graveyard to send three more cards off the top of his Deck: Agido the Ancient Sentinel, Bystial Magnamhut and Tearlaments Merrli. He Tuned Scheiren and Diviner to Synchro Summon Baronne de Fleur in defense mode, used Kitkallos’s effect to destroy itself, brought back Tearlaments Merrli, and sent eight cards total to the graveyard:
Quinsee built a chain with Havnis and Merrli. He Fused Merrli and Kitkallos to Fusion Summon Tearlaments Rulkallos, then Fused Havnis and Scheiren for Garura, Wings of Resonant Life. He Linked away Merrli and Garura for Spright Elf, and drew Super Polymerization with Garura’s effect. “So I’ve used every name…” Out of Tearlaments, Quinsee used Spright Elf’s effect to revive Diviner of the Herald, couldn’t use its effect since it’s once per turn, and Set Tearlaments Cryme and Super Polymerization. “I’ll proceed to my End Phase.”
Nguyen drew for his turn and moved to Main Phase 1. He activated Runick Tip to search his Deck for Runick Destruction, then activated Destruction targeting the Set Super Poly. “Oh boy,“ replied Quinsee. “Uhh. Yeah!” Quinsee let it go and lost four cards off the top of his Deck. Nguyen Normal Summoned Cyber Valley!
“Wow! You really are playing the OG stuff,” remarked a delighted Quinsee, surprised. Both Duelists laughed. “My respect has gone up for you! That’s fine. Machine Dupe?” Nguyen laughed again. “That would be epic!”
Nugyen activated Runick Slumber, and Quinsee responded by chaining Tearlaments Rulkallos’s effect. He brought it back in defense mode, and Nguyen responded with Demise of the Land. Quinsee negated it with Baronne de Fleur, denying Nguyen his Field Spell. Nguyen activated Runick Smiting Storm to summon Freki the Runick Fangs, and Quinsee used Spright Elf to bring back Merrli. Quinsee sent Bystial Magnamhut and two copies of Keldo to his Graveyard. Nguyen tried to banish Cyber Valley and Freki, and Quinsee responded with Herald of Orange Light, negating the effect and destroying Cyber Valley. Freki stayed on the field, but Nguyen had nothing to beat Quinsee’s board and promptly conceded.
“That 50-50 missed so bad!” laughed Nguyen, lamenting his inability to destroy Quinsee’s Set Tearlaments Cryme with his Runick Destruction. “Hit the deadest Super Poly ever instead!”
Jake Quinsee builds a board of negation and successfully holds a Herald of Orange Light for just the right moment, shutting down Johnny Nguyen’s Runick Deck and taking Game 1 with authority.
Both competitors exchanged small talk as they sided for Game 2. “Maaan, Ishizu Fairies do too much!” Nguyen laughed. “My Deck does a lot, but those cards do too much!”
“Well your Deck’s clearly been working to make it so far,” replied Quinsee. With one tie apiece, these competitors had secured 16 of a possible 18 points total in this tournament so far.
“Yeah, I’ve been playing a lot of them today! But they just do too much! Cryme is insane, who made that card, too?”
“Whoever made that card, I love it,” laughed Quinsee. “Good luck my friend!” Game 2 began with a fistbump.
Quinsee had Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill, Tearlaments Scheiren, Herald of Orange Light, Tearlaments Scream and Tearlaments Reinoheart. He opened with Scream and Reinoheart, sending Kelbek the Ancient Vanguard, Agido the Ancient Sentinel, and Keldo the Sacred Protector to the Graveyard. He sent Tearlaments Scheiren to his Graveyard with Reinoheart, creating a chain with Scheiren at Chain Link 1, Agido at Chain Link 2, and Kelbek at Chain Link 3. Each player milled a total of 10 cards:
Quinsee used Scheiren to Summon Tearlaments Kitkallos, searched Cryme with Scream and got Tearlaments Merrli with Kitkallos’s effect. He popped Tearlaments Kitkallos for Tearlaments Merrli and sent a total of 8 cards to the Graveyard:
Quinsee made a total of three Fusion Summons: Tearlaments Rulkallos, Garura, Wings of Resonant Life, and finally Tearlaments Kaleido-Heart. He Linked Merrli and Garura for Spright Elf, drew another Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill with Garura’s effect, and revived his Orange Light with Elf. That let him Link with Rulkallos to Synchro Summon Baronne de Fleur, and he banished Mudora the Sword Oracle to send all three of his copies of Primeval Planet Perlereino back to his Deck. He Set Tearlaments Cryme to finish out.
Nguyen moved to his Main Phase 1 and cleared Quinsee’s whole field with The Winged Dragon of Ra – Sphere Mode! “I regret summoning three monsters,” remarked Quinsee, in a flat tone. Nguyen used Runick Tip’s effect to search, getting Runick Destruction from his Deck. It banished Quinsee’s Primeval Planet Perlereino. “One down!” Nguyen laughed. He activated Mystic Mine, Set three cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone and ended.
Quinsee drew Tearlaments Havnis. He Normal Summoned it, moved to the End Phase, and gave back the Sphere Mode. Mine was destroyed by its own effect. “Your go.”
Nguyen flipped Runick Destruction in his Draw Phase, targeting Quinsee’s Set Tearlaments Cryme. Quinsee chained it sending Scheiren to the Graveyard. He banished Mudora, returning Tearlaments Kaleido-Heart, Tearlaments Merrli, and Cryme to his Deck. He Fusion Summoned Kitkallos and sent Perlereino, Harpie’s Feather Duster, and Herald of Orange Light to the Graveyard, then searched his Deck for Tearlaments Havnis.
Nguyen used Runick Tip to search his Deck for Runick Fountain, banishing Tearlaments Sulliek from Quinsee’s Deck. Nguyen activated the Fountain, Set his last card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, turned The Winged Dragon of Ra – Sphere Mode to defense and moved to his End Phase.
Quinsee drew Scheiren for his turn, now holding two copies of Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill plus a Herald of Orange Light. He activated the Scheiren’s effect, dropped one of the Ghost Mourners for it, and sent three cards off his Deck to the Graveyard, including a Merrli. He made Merrli Chain Link 1 and Scream Chain Link 2. He sent Sulliek, Heartbeat, and Diviner of the Herald to the Graveyard, then fused Tearlaments Merrli with Garura, Wings of Resonant Life to Fusion Summon Mudragon of the Swamp. He used Sulliek and Heartbeat, getting Tearlaments Reinoheart and Tearlaments Sulliek to his hand.
He continued, Normal Summoning Reinoheart to send a live Tearlaments Havnis to his Graveyard – he’d only used Merrli’s Fusion effect so far. Quinsee Fused Havnis, Rulkallos, and Reinoheart for Tearlaments Kaleido-Heart, then sent Runick Fountain back to Nguyen’s Deck. Quinsee Set Sulliek and used Kitkallos to search Tearlaments Havnis, popping Kit. He Xyz Summoned Time Thief Redoer and passed.
Nguyen used Redoer in the Standby Phase, taking Nguyuen’s Rivalry of Warlords and adding it to Redoer as an Xyz Material. That gave him a Trap Card to detached, and Quinsee detached Rivalry and Havnis to claim two of Redoer’s effects: He spun The Winged Dragon of Ra – Sphere Mode to the top of Nguyen’s Deck, and banished Redoer to keep it safe until the End Phase. Quinsee used Kaleido-Heart as Chain Link 1, targeting one of Nguyen’s face-down backrows, and Scheiren as Chain Link 2. Quinsee Fusion Summoned Tearlaments Rulkallos and Nguyen lost his backrow, now down to just two cards in his backrow. He Set one more and ended.
Quinsee drew Tearlaments Reinoheart and brought back his Time Thief Redoer. Six minutes remained in the Match. Still in the Draw Phase, Nguyen flipped Metaverse: Quinsee Chained Keldo, returning Harpie’s Feather Duster, Heartbeat, and a Perlereino to his Deck. Nguyen brought out Mystic Mine, and Quinsee moved to Main Phase 1.
Quinsee Linked with Time Thief Redoer for Dharc the Dark Charmer, Gloomy, Linked that to Kaleido-Heart for Spright Elf, and Normal Summoned Herald of Orange Light. He overlaid it with Spright Elf, Xyz Summoned Gigantic Spright, and Linked it with Tearlaments Rulkallos for Spright Sprind. He moved to the End Phase and passed.
Nguyen passed back. The Duel stood at 8000 to 8000.
Quinsee drew for his turn and passed.
Nguyen Set a card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone and ended.
Quinsee drew and passed.
Nguyen Set a fourth backrow.
Quinsee passed.
Nguyen passed.
Quinsee passed.
Nguyen Passed.
Quinsee discarded Tearlaments Merrli, passing.
Nguyen passed.
Quinsee discarded Tearlaments Reinoheart.
Nguyen blasted Quinsee’s Set Sulliek with Runick Destruction, banishing four cards from Quinsee’s Deck. Quinsee used Tearlaments Sulliek to get Tearlaments Havnis, and Nguyen moved through his Phases to his Main Phase. Time was called at that point, and since both Duelists were tied at 8000 Life Points and Quinsee won the first Duel, the Match went to Quinsee!
If Nguyen had a few seconds more, he could’ve Special Summoned Munin the Runick Wings and pressed to the End Phase, where Munin would’ve gotten him 1000 Life Points and won him the Duel. But since time was called in the Main Phase that wasn’t going to happen. And even if it did, Quinsee had held that Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill for the entire game, just for this exact situation.
Nguyen offered the handshake, Quinsee respectfully accepted, and post-Match banter ensured. Jake Quinsee moves on with six wins and a draw, in a great position to make Day 2!
