Top 16 Feature Match: Vincent Wong Versus Baptiste Derouin

November 6th, 2022

Only one Floowandereeze Duelist is left in the Main Event here at YCS Pasadena, and it’s France’s Baptiste Derouin! He’s facing off against Vincent Wong, from right here in Los Angeles. What makes this Match unique? There are no Ishizu Fairy cards in either Deck.

Derouin opened the first Duel with Dimension Shifter! He played Floowandereeze and the Magnificent Map, then Floowandereeze & Robina, searching his Deck for Floowandereeze & Eglen to banish it. He retrieved Eglen and searched Barrier Statue of the Stormwinds, Summoned the Eglen, and Tribute Summoned Floowandereeze & Empen. Wong activated the effect of Bystial Magnamhut from his hand, banishing Derouin’s Shifter to Special Summon Magnamhut. Derouin got Floowandereeze and the Dreaming Town from his Deck. He Set one card to his backrow and ended.

Wong had a hand of Spright BlueSpright Starter, Skull MeisterSpright Smashers and Nimble Beaver.

He activated Starter to search and Special Summon Spright Carrot. Derouin flipped Dreaming Town and Summoned Floowandereeze & Robina, making it Chain Link 1 and Eglen Chain Link 2. He searched his Deck for Floowandereeze & Toccan, Summoned Eglen, and searched his Deck for Mist Valley Apex Avian. He Summoned the Toccan next, Tributed it and Robina for Apex Avian, and got back his Robina and Toccan.

Play was back to Wong. He Normal Summoned Nimble Beaver and used it to Special Summon Nimble Angler, then overlaid both for Onibimaru Soul Sweeper. He detached Angler, targeted Empen with Soul Sweeper’s effect, and Derouin let it get banished, holding back on the Apex Avian. Wong then Link Summoned Dharc the Dark Charmer, Gloomy, and overlaid for Gigantic Spright; he attacked over Apex Avian to banish that too!

Vincent Wong

Wong moved to Main Phase 2, used the effect of Gigantic Spright to Special Summon Spright Jet, and searched his Deck for another Spright Starter. He Special Summoned Spright Blue from his hand, searched his Deck for Spright Red, and Summoned it in defense. He Set Smashers and Starter, then Link Summoned Spright Elf to finish the turn.

Derouin moved to his Draw Phase and Wong flipped Starter, Special Summoning another Spright Blue. He searched Spright Jet and play was back to Derouin… who activated Dark Ruler No More! He activated Floowandereeze and the Magnificent Map, but Wong gave up his Gigantic Spright for Spright Smashers and banished the Map on the chain.

Derouin Normal Summoned Toccan, got back Empen, and Tribute Summoned it. He used its effect to retrieve Eglen, searched Floowandereeze and the Unexplored Winds and brought down Eglen to get back Floowandereeze & Toccan. He searched a second copy of Empen, Summoned Robina, and that was enough for Wong! He politely asked if he could concede, it was affirmed that he could, and that was all for Game 1.

A Murder Of Floowandereeze

Vincent Wong does a remarkable job playing around a Turn 1 Dimension Shifter, but Baptiste Derouin has all the follow-up in the world, and a clutch Dark Ruler No More makes the rest of the Duel academic. But Wong went straight for his Side Deck and brought in at least seven cards for the matchup, so Games 2 and 3 might be very different!

Wong wished Derouin good luck and opted to go second. Derouin opened with Terraforming for Floowandereeze and the Magnificent Map, used it to summon Floowandereeze & Eglen, banished Floowandereeze & Robina, searched Floowandereeze & Empen, and when he activated Robina’s effect Wong blasted him with PSY-Framegear Gamma! He Special Summoned it from his hand along with PSY-Frame Driver from his Deck. Derouin Set one card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone and passed.

Wong drew to a hand of Infinite ImpermanenceCosmic CycloneSpright SmashersSwap Frog, and Spright Blue. He Normal Summoned the Frog, sent another copy from his Deck to his Graveyard, and Special Summoned Blue to search Spright Jet. He Special Summoned that next, searched his Deck forSpright Starter and activated it to bring out Spright Carrot. He Linked Jet and Blue for Spright Sprind, used it to send Nimble Angler to his Graveyard, and used that to Special Summon two copies of Nimble Beaver. He overlaid Sprind and a Beaver to Xyz Summon Gigantic Spright, then used its effect detaching a Beaver to Special Summon Spright Jet. He Linked a Beaver and Swap Frog for Spright Elf, then used the Elf to bring back a Spright Jet, overlaying both Jets for Cat Shark

He detached one Jet to use Cat Shark’s effect, moved to his Battle Phase and this time it was Derouin’s turn to concede the Duel!

Cat Shark For Game!

Vincent Wong captures victory in Game 2 just as swiftly as Derouin did in Game 1, pushing this Match to a third and final contest! Both competitors did some careful Side Decking, wished each other good luck, and proceeded to Game 3.

Derouin opted to go first. Twenty-four minutes remained in the round, and Derouin opened up with Floowandereeze and the Advent of Adventure, banishing Floowandereeze & Toccan to search Floowandereeze & Robina. He Normal Summoned it, making Robina Chain Link 1 and Toccan Chain Link 2, took back the Toccan, and Summoned Eglen. Wong had PSY-Framegear Gamma again! He blew away the Eglen, Special Summoned PSY-Frame Driver, and Derouin had to reconsider his plans. Derouin Set one card to his back row as he tried to recover.

Wong had Swap FrogSpright StarterSpright RedSpright Smashers, and Spright Blue. He played Starters to Special Summon Spright Carrot, Special Summoned Spright Red, Normal Summoned Swap Frog, and used it to send another Swap Frog to his Graveyard. He Summoned Blue next to search Spright Jet, Special Summoned it, and searched another Spright Smashers. He activated it, banishing Spright Starter to pay for it, and Derouin flipped Trap Trick to banish one copy of Harpie’s Feather Storm, and Set another. Wong banished the on-field copy with Smashers as soon as it resolved, then Linked Blue and Swap Frog to Link Summon Spright Sprind

Wong sent Nimble Angler to the Graveyard to Special Summon two copies of Nimble Beaver, used one with Sprind to Xyz Summon Gigantic Spright, then detached the Beaver to Special Summon Spright Jet. He made Cat Shark next, detached Beaver for the Cat’s effect, then Linked off the Cat for Spright Elf. He used that to bring back Spright Jet, and attacked with Jet over Robina. With a 6400 ATK Gigantic Sprighton the board, plus Spright Carrot and Spright Elf, all Derouin had to do was the math. The handshake followed moments later.

Cat Shark For Game Again!

Vincent Wong loses the first Duel to a Turn 1 Dimension Shifter, but battles back with PSY-Framegear Gamma in two consecutive games, making the sweep to lock his place in the Top 8!
