Top 8 Feature Match: Kenny Nguyen vs. Cristian Urena
Only 8 Duelists remain! Kenny Nguyen, from San Jose, CA, is the last Spright Duelist in the tournament. He’s facing Cristian Urena, from Redding, PA, using the ubiquitous Tearlaments strategy. These are two of the strongest Decks in the game right now, and two great Duelists. But only one can advance!
Duel 1
Urena won the die roll and played first. He discarded Agido the Ancient Sentinel to Special Summon Keldo the Sacred Protector. He used Keldo to add Mudora the Sword Oracle to his hand, then Agido sent 5 cards from each player’s Deck to the Graveyard. With those, Urena activated Tearlaments Scheiren and Kelbek the Ancient Vanguard. Another 5 cards were sent from each Deck, and then Urena Fusion Summoned Tearlaments Kitkallos. He activated Kitkallos, then activated Agido from his hand. Nguyen Chained Infinite Impermanence to negate Kitkallos. Urena Special Summoned Agido, which Special Summoned Kelbek. He Normal Summoned Tearlaments Merrli, and used it to send Mudora and another Merrli. He used the Merrli in his Graveyard, and Nguyen responded with Bystial Magnamhut trying to banish it. Urena Chained Keldo from the Graveyard, returning the Targeted Merrli and 2 Primeval Planet Perlereino to his Deck. With Merrli gone, Urena couldn’t Fusion Summon, but Nguyen also couldn’t Special Summon his Magnamhut. Urena sent Keldo and Merrli from his field to Link Summon Spright Elf. Then he stacked Agido and Kelbek for Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir in Defense Position. He Set a single Spell/Trap Card. In the End Phase, Nguyen activated Bystial Druiswurm, trying to banish Merrli. Urena used Mudora to return Merrli and Triple Tactics Talent to his Deck.
Nguyen tried using Druiswurm again, this time targeting Diviner of the Herald. Urena used Keldo to return Diviner and Tearlaments Havnis from his Graveyard, and Nguyen’s Spright Blue. Nguyen Set a back row card in the same column as Urena’s. Nguyen Set another and passed.
Urena detached Kelbek from Bagooska. He switched Bagooska to Attack Position. Then, he discarded a Kelbek to Special Summon Mudora from his hand. Kelbek sent 5 cards from each player, and Urena triggered Havnis and Scheiren. Nguyen Chained Druiswurm, targeting Scheiren. Then he Chained Bystial Saronir, targeting Havnis. Both Tearlaments were banished before they could resolve, and Nguyen Special Summoned his Bystials in Attack Position. Urena used Spright Elf and Kitkallos to play Dharc the Dark Charmer, Gloomy, stealing a Magnamhut from Nguyen’s Graveyard. He went to his Battle Phase, sending Dharc to attack Druiswurm. Dharc was destroyed, and its effect added Scheiren to Urena’s hand. He sent his stolen Magnamhut to trade with Saronir. In Main Phase 2, he Normal Summoned Scheiren. He stacked Scheiren with Mudora for Time Theif Redoer in Defense Position. In the End Phase, Nguyen banished Kitkallos to Special Summon Magnamhut. Its effect added another Druiswurm to Nguyen’s hand.
Nguyen Normal Summoned Swap Frog. Before Nguyen could continue, Urena conceded the first Duel.
Duel 2
Urena started off this time with Primeval Planet Perlereino, which added Tearlaments Merrli to his hand. Then he activated Tearlaments Scheiren, discarding Kelbek the Ancient Vanguard. Nguyen negated Kelbek with Skull Meister. Urena continued, playing Tearlaments Reinoheart, which sent Tearlaments Havnis to the Graveyard. He tried using Havnis, and Nguyen responded with Bystial Saronir to banish Havnis. Urena stacked Scheiren and Reinoheart for Time Theif Redoer, detaching for its effect. He then used Scheiren to Fusion Summon Tearlaments Kitkallos. Perlereino destroyed Saronir. Kitkallos sent itself to the Graveyard to Special Summon Merrli. With Merrli and Kitkallos, he sent Agido and 7 other cards. Agido then sent 5 cards from each player. Urena triggered Tearlaments Scream with that, adding Tearlaments Cryme to his hand. Urena Set two cards in his back row. In the End Phase, Time Theif Redoer returned to the field.
In Nguyen’s Standby Phase, Redoer stole an Infinite Impermanence from Nguyen’s Deck. Nguyen used Druiswurm, banishing Kitkallos. He sent Druiswurm to attack Merrli, but Time Theif Redoer put it on top of Nguyen’s Deck. At the end of the Battle Phase, Nguyen played Spright Starter, then Chained Cosmic Cyclone to banish Urena’s Set Tearlaments Sulliek. Starter Special Summoned Spright Blue, and it was negated by Urena’s Tearlaments Cryme. Out of resources, Nguyen decided to move on to the third Duel!
Duel 3
Nguyen began the final Duel with Nimble Beaver, bringing Nimble Angler to the field. He Link Summoned Spright Sprind, sending an Angler to the Graveyard, and bringing two more Beavers to the field. He stacked Sprind and a Beaver for Gigantic Spright, using its effect to Special Summon Swap Frog. Swap’s effect sent another Swap to the Graveyard. He used Gigantic and Beaver to play Spright Elf, which brought the second Swap to the field. He stacked both Frogs for Toadally Awesome! He Set one Spell/Trap Card.
Urena had Dark Ruler No More! He followed that with Primeval Planet Perlereino, adding Scheiren to his hand. He activated Scheiren, and Nguyen used Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Urena then had Triple Tactics Talent! He saw Nguyen’s hand of Druiswurm and Saronir, and shuffled the Druiswurm into the Deck. Urena played Instant Fusion next, bringing Kitkallos to the field, and Nguyen flipped Infinite Impermanence to negate it. Urena Normal Summoned Mudora the Sword Oracle, and sent it to attack Spright Elf. In the End Phase, Kitkallos was destroyed due to Instant Fusion. Its effect in the Graveyard activated, and Urena Chained Mudora from the field to shuffle all of Nguyen’s Nimble Beavers back into the Deck. Kitkallos sent Tearlaments Havnis and Tearlaments Reinoheart to the Graveyard. Since Urena had banished Mudora from the field, Nguyen couldn’t use the Saronir in his hand! Urena Fusion Summoned Tearlaments Rulkallos, revived Reinoheart, and then had Perlereino destroy Toadally Awesome. Reinoheart sent Merrli, and he fused it with Reinoheart for Tearlaments Kaleido-Heart. The destroyed Toadally Awesome returned Nimble Angler to Nguyen’s hand.
Nguyen only had Saronir, Angler, and the new card he just drew. He Special Summoned Saronir, banishing Herald of Orange Light from Urena’s Graveyard. He Normal Summoned Angler. He then activated Druiswurm from his hand, and Urena Chained Rulkallos. It negated and destroyed Druiswurm, then sent Kaleido-Heart to the Graveyard. Kaleido-Heart activated, returning itself to the field and sending another Tearlaments monster to the Graveyard. Nguyen knew he wouldn’t be making it out of this one and accepted defeat!
Cristian Urena is moving on to the Top 4 with Tearlaments!
