Round 1 Feature Match: Bryce Schultz Versus David Berlinsky

Round 1 is underway this morning at YCS Philadelphia! Bryce Schultz is a newcomer to Yu-Gi-Oh with just a few months of play under his belt. He’s here at YCS Philadelphia with his Traptrix Deck, to get a firsthand look at YCS competition! His opponent, David Berlinsky, has been to YCS events before, and his Superheavy Samurai Deck is tried and tested for this tournament.

Berlinsky started the Duel by activating the effect of Superheavy Samurai Samurai Motorbike, adding Superheavy Samurai Soulpiercer, then Link Summoned using both his Motorbike and Soulpiercer into Superheavy Samurai Scarecrow. He then resolved Soulpiercer’s effect to add Superheavy Samurai Prodigy Wakaushi from his Deck to his hand.

Superheavy Samurai Scarecrow’s effect let him discarding PSY-Frame Driver and target Superheavy Samurai Soulpierecer. He added Superheavy Samurai Prodigy Wakaushi to his Pendulum Zone and used its Pendulum Effect to place Superheavy Samurai Monk Big Benkei in his other Pendulum Zone. He then activated Monk to get Superheavy Samurai Soulpeacemaker from his Deck to his hand. Berlinsky Synchro Summoned Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon with Soulpiercer and Prodigy. He activated Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon targeting Motorbike in his Graveyard, then chained Soulpiercer’s effect, and finally chained Wakaushi’s ability. He Summoned Motorbike, searched Superheavy Samurai Soulgaia Booster, and placed Wakaushi back in his Pendulum Zone.

Barrone De Fleur hit Berlinsky’s field with Superheavy Samurai Motorbike courtesy of Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon, and he activated Superheavy Samurai Soulpeacemaker from his hand to equip it to Scarecrow. He activated Peacemaker’s effect, tributing Superheavy Samurai Scarecrow to Special Summon Superheavy Samurai Scales in Defense Position. Then, he activated Scales to Summon Superheavy Samurai Soulpierecer. Berlinsky used Superheavy Samurai Soulgaia Booster to equip itself from the hand to Soulpiercer, then activated Soulaia Booster to Special Summon itself from the Spell & Trap Zone. He linked Soulpierecer and Gaiapiercer to Link Summon Ancient Gear Ballista.

Berlinsky activated Ancient Gear Ballista and chained Superheavy Samurai Soulpiercer. He resolved Soulpiercer to get Superheavy Samurai Stealthy, and used Ballista to add Ancient Gear Box to his hand. The effect of Ancient Gear Box got him Infinitrack Tunneller from his Deck. He then Link Summoned Qliphort Genius with Superheavy Samurai Scales and Ancient Gear Ballista.

Berlinsky then Pendulum Summoned both Ancient Gear Box and Infinitrack Tunneller. That triggered Qliphort Genius, which let him get Therion “King” Regulus from his Deck. He activated the effect of Regulus targeting Superheavy Samurai Soulpiercer and Summoned Regulus with Soulpiercer equipped. He then Linked Summoned Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess using Ancient Gear BoxQliphort Genius, and Infinitrack Tunneller. Berlinsky returned five of his Earth Machines to the Deck to draw 2 cards with Tunneller.

Schultz started his first turn with a hand of Torrential TributeGravedigger’s Trap HoleTerrifying Trap Hole Nightmare,Traptrix VesiculoTraptrix Mantis, and Traptrix Dionaea. He Normal Summoned Traptrix Mantis to activate its effect, and Berlinsky responded with Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, destroying Mantis but still allowing Schultz to search his Deck for a Traptrix Monster. He got Traptrix Arachnocampa with Mantis, then Set a card, and Normal Summoned Traptrix Vesiculo for its ability. He sent his Set Terrifying Trap Hole Nightmare with its effect, but Berlinsky negated it with Apollusa, Bow of the Goddess. Schultz ended his turn by Setting Gravedigger’s Trap Hole and Torrential. Apollusa dropped to 2400 ATK.

Berlinsky drew to start his turn and entered into his Main Phase, activate Barronede Fleuer to destroy Schultz’s SetTorrential Tribute. He then Special Summoned Superheavy Samurai Stealthy from his hand, and activated Superheavy Samurai Monk Big Benkei in his Pendulum Zone to search his Deck for Superheavy Samurai Soulpiercer. He Normal Summoned Soulpierecer and entered his Battle Phase. He attacked with Superheavy Samurai Sealthy directly, followed by Apollousa, Bow of the GoddessTherion “King” RegulusSuperheavy Samurai Soulpiercer, and Baronne De Fleur to end the Duel!

Schultz chose to start the second Duel, opening with two copies of Dark Ruler No MoreTraptrix DionaeaParallel eXceed, and Cosmic Cyclone. He Normal Summoned Dionaea, then Link Summoned Traptrix Sera. He Special Summoned Parallel eXceed following the Link Summon. He Set his remaining Spell Cards in his hand and passed turn.

Berlinsky got started by activating Superheavy Samurai Prodigy Wakaushi in his Pendulum Zone. Schultz chained Cosmic Cyclone to banish it, paying 1000 Life Points to do so. Berlinsky then Special Summoned Superheavy Samurai Stealthy from his hand in Defense Position, then used it to Link Summon Superheavy Samurai Scarecrow. He activated Sauge de Fleur, targeting his Scarecrow and Schultz’s Set Dark Ruler No More

Play moved to the Battle Phase and Berlinsky attacked Traptrix Sera with Sauge de Fleur, bringing Schultz down to 4900 Life Points. He entered his Main Phase 2, Berlinsky Normal Summoned Superheavy Samurai Soulpeacemaker, and Link Summoned another Superheavy Samurai Scarecrow using it. He activated the effect of the new Scarecrow, discarding PSY-Framegear Gamma to Special Summon Superheavy Samurai Soulpeacemaker from the Graveyard. He activated Soulpeacemaker’s effect and equipped it to Scarecrow, then activated Soulpeacemaker and tributed Scarecrow to Special Summon Superheavy Samurai Soulpiercer from the Deck. He used Soulpiercer and Sage De Fleur to Link Summon Aussa the Earth Charmer, Immovable

Berlinsky activated Soulpiercer to get Motorbike from his Deck, then activated Motorbike’s effect by discarding it to fetch Superheavy Samurai Prodigy Wakaushi next. He activated Prodigy in his Pendulum Scale, then activated its Pendulum Effect to place Superheavy Samurai Monk Big Benkei in his other Pendulum Scale. He activated Monk’s effect to get a Soulpierecer. Berlinsky activated Aussa the Earth Charmer’s ability, Summoned Traptrix Dionaea from Schultz’s Graveyard, then Synchro Summoned Aussa the Earth Charmer using Dionaea and Wakaushi. 

Wakaushi’s effect let Berlinsky return Wakaushi to his Pendulum Zone, and he used Accel Stardust to Summon Superheavy Samurai Motorbike from the Graveyard. He activated Accel Stardust’s other effect, tributing it to Summon Stardust Dragon from his Extra Deck and Synchro Summoning again using Motorbike and Stardust Dragon for Baronne de Fleur. He used Baronne’s ability to destroy Schultz’s other Set card before passing play: Dark Ruler No More.

Schultz drew Traptrix Mantis for his turn and Normal Summoned it. He used Parallel eXceed and Traptri Mantisto Xyz Summon Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir in Defense Position, causing Baronne de Fleurto swap to Defense Position as well. Schultz passed.

Berlinsky activated the effect of Aussa the Earth Charmer, Immovable to Summon Traptrix Dionaea from Schultz’s Graveyard again, then Pendulum Summoned Superheavy Samurai Soulpiercer and Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit from his hand. He Link Summoned Underworld Goddess of the Closed World using Aussa the Earth Charmer, ImmovableGhost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, and Soulpiercer, and Schultz’s Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir. With no more cards left to defend himself, Schultz conceded the Duel.
