Round 6 Feature Match: Christopher Lin vs. Liam Mac Oscair
Two awesome rogue decks are facing off at Table 7 this Round! Christopher Lin is piloting Plunder Patroll, and his opponent Liam Mac Oscair is running Mathmech @Ignister. Neither of these Decks are unheard of in a tournament of this level, but it’s rare to see them performing with such success, let alone paired off against one another. Which strategy would reign supreme: Plunder Patroll or Cyberse?! We were about to find out!
Lin opened with Plunder Patroll Shipyarrrd, discarding Water Enchantress of the Temple to search Blackeyes, the Plunder Patroll Seaguide. He banished Enchantress to search Rite of Aramesir, activated it, Special Summoned his Adventurer Token, and searched Fateful Adventure from his Deck. It hit his back row, and he activated it to search another Water Enchantress, discarding Dracoback, the Rideable Dragon. He brought it back attached to the Adventurer Token, Special Summoned Water Enchantress, and used its on-field effect to search Forest of Lost Flowers, placing it face-up in his Field Zone. He Normal Summoned Whitebeard, the Plunder Patroll Helm, Tuned it to Water Enchantress and Synchro Summoned Ancient Fairy Dragon. Whitebeard’s effect let him Summon Goldenhair, the Newest Plunder Patroll from his Deck, and he used the Fairy Dragon’s effect to try and destroy Forest of Lost Flowers. Mac Oscair blocked him with Effect Veiler!
Lin Synchro Summoned Plunder Patrollship Jord, targeting Whitebeard in his Graveyard to get it back to his hand. That placed it in his Pendulum Zone, and he used its Pendulum Effect to Special Summon two Plunder Patrollship Tokens, one to each side of the field. He then Link Summoned Blackbeard, the Plunder Patroll Captain. He used Blackbeard’s effect targeting itself, and summoned Plunder Patrollship Lys in defense mode, drawing a card. Lin used the effect of Shipyarrrd in the Graveyard, targeted Blackbeard, and Chained Lys’ effect as Chain Link 2. He Special Summoned, Set Shipyarrrd, activated it, and activated Blackeyes’ effect targeting Goldenhair: he Special Summoned Blackeyes and returned Goldenhair to his hand.
“Do I just end my turn here…?” Lin thought a moment, then decided that yes: he would end his turn here. Play passed to Mac Oscair.
Mac Oscair activated Small World, revealing another Effect Veiler from his hand, and showng Gatchiri @Ignister from his Deck, to search Mathmech Circular. He banished the Gatchiri and added Circular to his hand. He activated its effect, sent Mathmech Sigma to the Graveyard, and Lin Chained the effect of Blackbeard targeting Blackeyes. He Special Summoned Plunder Patrollship Moerk. Mac Oscair Special Summoned Sigma, activated Circular’s effect, and Lin popped Circular with Lys’ effect, discarding Shipyarrrd.
Mac Oscair activated A.I. Meet You. He revealed Decode Talker Heatsoul, and took Achichi @Ignister. He Normal Summoned it, activated its effect, and searched Pikari @Ignister. Lin activated Plunder Patrollship Moerk’s effect, discarding Whitebeard for cost, targeting the Mathmech. Then as Chain Link 2, he activated the effect of Iron Dragon Tiamaton. He Special Summoned it, cleared the Mathmech, and made a new Chain with Tiamaton’s effect as Chain Link 1, and Whitebeard as Chain Link 2, Summoning from Deck. He Special Summoned Redbeard, the Plunder Patroll Matey, then resolved Tiamaton.
Mac Oscair activated A.I.dle Reborn, targeting Achichi. Lin Chained Redbeard’s effect, Summoning Plunder Patrollship Brann and attaching Redbeard to it. Mac Oscair was out of options and he conceded the first Duel.
Christopher Lin scores a huge Turn 1 to open the Match, and picks apart Liam Mac Oscair’s moves one by one to grind through all of his options! Victory becomes academic for Lin in Game 1, and Mac Oscair scoops it up in under 10 minutes to take his shot at Game 2.
Mac Oscair started the second Duel and… passed entirely.
Lin sympathized: “Oh no! That’s tragic. Not in a Feature Match!” He activated Shipyarrrd, used it to discard Bystial Druiswurm and tried to Special Summon Bystial Magnamhut as Chain Link 2, forgetting Mac Oscair didn’t have a monster (so Magnamhut’s ability wasn’t a Quick Effect). Lin searched Bluebeard, the Plunder Patroll Shipwright, used Magnamhut’s effect at that point to banish Druiswurm, and Special Summoned the Magnamhut. He used its effect, then activated Terraforming to get another Shipyarrrd.
He Normal Summoned Whitebeard, the Plunder Patroll Helm, Tuned it to Magnamhut to Synchro Summon Baronne de Fleur, and used Whitebeard’s effect to try and Summon. When Mac Oscair chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Lin answered him with the Baronne. He Summoned Goldenhair, used Bluebeard’s effect to Special Summon, and then Link Summoned with both monsters for Blackbeard, the Plunder Patroll Captain.
He pitched Shipyarrrd to draw with Bluebeard, moved to the Battle Phase, attacked with Blackbeard, brought out Plunder Patrollship Brann, attacked with everything else and dropped Mac Oscair to 400 Life Points. Lin ended his turn, Masc Oscair found no solace in his next draw, and that was the Match!
Liam Mac Oscair can’t find any footing in the second Duel, and after passing his first turn he just can’t get a combo-starting card to kick stuff off. Christopher Lin sweeps the Match 2-0 with Plunder Patroll!
