Round 10 Feature Match: Justin Ly vs. David Tucker

July 9th, 2023

Welcome to Day 2 of the North America World Championship Qualifier! We’re starting things off with a banger! We have Justin Ly, from Forsyth, GA, playing Kashtira. This has proven to be the Deck to beat this weekend, but it’s not quite as dominant as it was in past events. Looking to take down Kashtira is David Tucker, from Chicago, IL, playing Synchrons! These Duelists have 6-2-1 records, putting them both on the bubble. A win is needed here for a shot at the Top Cut!

Duel 1

Tucker won the dice roll and chose to play first. He had Caligo Claw Crow, Stardust Synchron, Infinite Impermanence, Assault Synchron, and On Your Mark, Get Set, DUEL! in his opening hand. He played On Your Mark, adding Junk Synchron to his hand. He Special Summoned Assault Synchron from his hand, taking 700 damage, and then Special Summoned Caligo Claw Crow. He Synchro Summoned Herald of the Arc Light in the Extra Monster Zone. He then Normal Summoned Junk Synchron, which revived Caligo. He Synchro Summoned Junk Speeder, which Special Summoned Junk Synchron, Stardust Synchron, and Jet Synchron from the Deck. Stardust Synchron added Stardust Illumination to his hand. He tuned Stardust Synchron to Herald for Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon, and Herald’s effect added Illusion of Chaos to his hand. He activated Illusion, adding Magicians’ Souls to his hand, then putting the Illusion on top of his Deck. He activated Magicians’ Souls, sending Illusion from his Deck to the Graveyard, and Special Summoned Magicians’ Souls. He played Stardust Illumination, sending Stardust Trail to the Graveyard. Then Magicians’ Souls sent On Your Mark to the Graveyard to draw a card, getting another On Your Mark. He Tributed Magicians’ Souls to Special Summon Stardust Synchron from his Graveyard, then Special Summoned Stardust Trail as well. He banished Stardust Illumination from his Graveyard to reduce his Trail’s Level. He tuned Junk Synchron to Trail for Stardust Charge Warrior. Charge Warrior let him draw Synchron Carrier, and Trail created a Stardust Token. He tuned Stardust Synchron to Charge Warrior for Baronne de Fleur, then tuned Jet Synchron to the Token for Celestial Double Star Shaman. Jet’s effect added Junk Converter to his hand, and Double Star’s effect Special Summoned Junk Converter from the hand and Caligo from the Graveyard. He tuned Double Star to Junk Speeder for Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zing. Baronne destroyed Yazi, and Yazi Special Summoned Mare Mare! He used Mare Mare’s effect, reducing its Level to create a Mini Mare Mare Token, then used Mare Mare and Junk Converter to play Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon! It revived Double Star, and he used both to play Bystial Dis Pater! Dis Pater Special Summoned Trail, then finally Set Infinite Impermanence and On Your Mark.

David Tucker

Ly started with Pressured Planet Wraitsoth, searching for Kashtira Unicorn. He Special Summoned it and tried using its effect to search, but Tucker negated and destroyed it with Crystal Wing. Ly activated Tearlaments Kashtira in his hand, but Tucker used Dis Pater to destroy that before it could be Summoned. Tearlaments Kashtira’s effect in the Graveyard sent Wraitsoth and Triple Tactics Talent from the top of Ly’s Deck. Ly played Pot of Prosperity, banishing 6 cards from the Extra Deck. He took Kashtira Birth and used it to Special Summon Unicorn from the Graveyard. He Special Summoned Kashtira Riseheart next and used its effect to make it Level 7, banishing Kashtira Fenrir from his Deck for the cost. Tucker flipped Infinite Impermanence to negate Riseheart, keeping Ly from performing an Xyz Summon here. Ly went to the Battle Phase, sending Unicorn to attack Baronne. Wraitsoth was reducing Baronne’s ATK due to the four different Attributes in play, so both monsters were destroyed. Now that Baronne was gone, Ly was free to play Triple Tactics Talent, drawing two cards. He played Kashtiratheosis, and Special Summoned Fenrir from his Deck. Fenrir added Scareclaw Kashtira to his hand. He Special Summoned it, banishing Kashtiratheosis for its effect, and Kashtiratheosis then added his banished Fenrir to his hand. He stacked his Level 7 monsters for Dark Armed, the Dragon of Annihilation! He used it to destroy Crystal Wing and Dis Pater! Dark Armed banished Scareclaw Kashtira and Tearlaments Kashtira in the process. He finally Normal Summoned Fenrir and Set one card in his back row to finish the turn.

Justin Ly

Tucker drew a second Stardust Synchron. He Normal Summoned Synchron Carrier, then used its ability to Normal Summon Stardust Synchron. He tuned Stardust Synchron to Trail for PSY-Framelord Omega! It attacked Fenrir, but Ly flipped Forbidden Lance in the Damage Step to win the battle! In Main Phase 2, Tucker activated Omega in the Graveyard, returning it and Baronne to the Extra Deck. Fenrir’s effect banished Synchron Carrier face-down. Tucker Tributed his Mini Mare Mare Token to Special Summon Stardust Synchron from the Graveyard. It added Stardust Illumination to his hand, and Trail returned to the field. He used Stardust Synchron, Trail, and Caligo to play Baronne. It destroyed Dark Armed with its effect, and he Set Illumination to finish.

Ly used Riseheart, banishing Kashtiratheosis. Kashtiratheosis then returned his banished Scareclaw Kashtira to the hand. He combined Riseheart and Fenrir to play Number 11: Big Eye and Baronne was forced to use its negation on Big Eye. Ly then used Birth to Special Summon Unicorn, which added Kashtiratheosis to his hand. He played that to Special Summon Fenrir, which in turn searched for another Unicorn. He Normal Summoned the second Unicorn through the effect of Birth, and combined his three monsters for Kashtira Arise-Heart! He played Terraforming for another Wraitsoth. Terraforming was banished by Arise-Heart, and Arise-Heart attached Ly’s banished Infinitrack Goliath as a material. Ly Special Summoned Scareclaw Kashtira from his hand, banishing Kashtira Big Bang as part of the effect. Big Bang activated – Tucker knew there was no coming back from all this, and conceded the first Duel!

Duel 2

Tucker started this time with a hand of Infinite Impermanence, Caligo, Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, Junk Synchron, and Junk Converter. He activated Converter, discarding it and Ghost Belle to find Junk Synchron. He Normal Summoned it and revived Converter, then Synchro Summoned Junk Speeder. Converter revived Junk Synchron, and Speeder Special Summoned 4 Synchrons: Assault, Jet, Junk, and Stardust. Stardust Synchron added Stardust Illumination to his hand. He used Illumination to send Stardust Trail to the Graveyard. He used Jet and Speeder for Stardust Charge Warrior, and drew Mare Mare with its effect. He used Junk and Caligo for T.G. Hyper Librarian! Now he’ll be drawing a card for every Synchro Summon! He tuned Stardust Synchron to Charge Warrior for Baronne, and Librarian let him draw Monster Reborn. He Tributed Jet to bring back Stardust, which let him also play Trail. He used both for Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon and drew Illusion of Chaos. He combined Accel with Assault Synchron for Dis Pater and drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Monster Reborn got back Speeder, using it with Junk Synchron for PSY-Framelord Omega, and he drew Infinite Impermanence. Omega banished Dark Ruler No More from Ly’s hand! Dis Pater returned Omega to the field, and this time it banished Pressured Planet Wraitsoth from Ly’s hand! Tucker Set both copies of Infinite Impermanence to finish.

Ly played Pot of Prosperity, banishing 6 cards, and Tucker hit him with Ash Blossom. Ly played Talent, and Baronne negated it. But Ly had a second Talent, taking Dis Pater. But after thinking a moment, realized he had no outs to Tucker’s incredible start, and conceded! He just couldn’t fight back after having two cards ripped from his opening hand!

Duel 3

Ly went first this time and there were only a few minutes left on the clock. He played Terraforming, then Chained Dimension Shifter. He got Pressured Planet Wraitsoth and activated it to search for Unicorn. He Special Summoned it, getting Kashtiratheosis. He played that to Special Summon Fenrir, and Fenrir searched for Riseheart. He Special Summoned Riseheart. He stacked Fenrir and Unicorn for Kashtira Shangri-Ira in Defense Position. Then he activated Riseheart’s effect to make it Level 7, banishing Kashtira Big Bang and banishing 3 cards from Tucker’s Deck. Big Bang’s effect let him Special Summon Fenrir, and Shangri-Ira locked down a Monster Zone. He used Riseheart to play Arise-Heart. Then he played Pot of Prosperity, banishing 6 cards from his Extra Deck, and Tucker finally used the Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring he’d been holding. Arise-Heart’s effect attached Infinitrack Goliath to itself.

Tucker had Dark Hole, Triple Tactics Talent, Caligo, and Junk Synchron. He drew Stardust Synchron. In the Standby Phase, Shangri-Ira Special Summoned Unicorn in Defense Position. Tucker played Dark Hole. Shangri-Ira survived with its effect, and Arise-Heart survived thanks to its Infinitrack Goliath Xyz Material. Tucker then played Triple Tactics Talent to take control of Arise-Heart! He used it, detaching 3 materials to banish Shangri-Ira. He sent it to attack directly. In Main Phase 2, he Normal Summoned Junk Synchron, and Special Summoned Caligo. He played Junk Speeder, which once more Special Summoned 4 Synchrons: Jet, Stardust, Junk, and Assault. Stardust Synchron added Stardust Illumination to his hand. He combined Jet with Speeder for Charge Warrior and drew Reinforcement of the Army. He combined Assault with Charge Warrior for Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon, then played Illumination to Special Summon Stardust Trail from his Deck. He combined Trail and Stardust Synchron for PSY-Framelord Omega. Reinforcement of the Army got Junk Synchron to the hand, and the round timer ended. Tucker was on track to put together an incredible board, but now the Duel would be determined by Life Points. Thanks to attacking Ly with his own Arise-Heart, Tucker had the lead!

David Tucker is victorious with Synchrons!
