Top 4 Feature Match: Nicholas Petzold vs. Carlos Perez Padilla

July 30th, 2023

Only four Duelists remain! Hailing from Austin, TX, Nicholas Petzold is back in the Feature Match seat. He won his Round 2 Feature Match yesterday with Marincess! He’s facing Carlos Perez Padilla, from Ecuador, playing a Labrynth Deck! These are two wildly different strategies, and only one can move on to the finals for a shot at the Ultra Rare Darklord Prize Cards! It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Perez won the dice roll and chose to play first. He activated Labrynth Labyrinth and Set three cards.

Petzold Normal Summoned Marincess Pascalus, and used its effect to Special Summon Marincess Blue Tang. Blue Tang’s effect sent Marincess Basilalima to the Graveyard. He played Pot of Desires, banishing ten cards from the top of his Deck to draw two cards. He used Blue Tang to Link Summon Marincess Sea Angel. He activated Blue Tang and Sea Angel, and Perez flipped Skill Drain to negate Sea Angel. Blue Tang’s effect let Petzold get Marincess Dive to his hand. He used Pascalus and Sea Angel to Link Summon Marincess Coral Anemone. Then he activated Dive, targeting Blue Tang, but Perez flipped Ice Dragon’s Prison! He stole the Blue Tang, then banished Blue Tang and Coral Anemone! With Labrynth Labyrinth, Perez then Special Summoned Lovely Labrynth of the Silver Castle. Petzold passed with no other plays.

Perez Normal Summoned Ariane the Labrynth Servant, sending both his monsters to attack directly.

Petzold simply Set a monster.

Perez sent Lovely Labrynth to destroy Petzold’s Set Droll & Lock Bird. Ariane attacked directly, and Perez Set one more back row card.

Petzold played a second Pot of Desires, drawing 2 cards. He Special Summoned Marincess Springirl from his hand, banishing Basilalima. Then he Special Summoned Marincess Sleepy Maiden. He used both monsters to Link Summon Coral Anemone. Then he banished Pascalus to return Marincess Dive to his hand. He went to the Battle Phase, sending Coral Anemone to destroy Ariane. He Set two back row cards and Set a monster to finish the turn.

Perez had Lovely Labrynth destroy Petzold’s Set Effect Veiler. He Set a third face-down card in his back row.

Petzold Special Summoned Springirl and used it to Link Summon Marincess Blue Slug. Springirl’s effect sent two cards to the Graveyard, but neither were Marincess cards. In the End Phase, Perez flipped Big Welcome Labrynth. Perez tried to negate it with Ash Blossom from his hand, but Perez flipped Solemn Strike! Petzold was already struggling against Skill Drain, and he knew it was over from here. He conceded this Duel.

Duel 2

Petzold started this time with Pascalus, which Special Summoned Basilalima. He used Basilalima to Link Summon Sea Angel, adding Dive to his hand. Perez responded with Droll & Lock Bird to keep Petzold from doing any more Deck searching. Petzold played Triple Tactics Talent to take a card from Perez’s hand! Perez revealed Lava Golem, Welcome Labrynth, Pot of Extravagance, and Destructive Daruma Karma Cannon. Petzold put Welcome Labrynth back in the Deck. Petzold then used both his monsters to play Coral Anemone, and Special Summoned Pascalus. He used Dive to get back Basilalima. He used both to play Bahamut Shark, which Special Summoned Toadally Awesome. He used Coral Anemone and Bahamut Shark to play Marincess Marbled Rock. Coral Anemone and Marbled Rock together returned Basilalima and Dive to his hand.

Perez gave Lava Golem to Petzold, Tributing both his monsters. Toadally Awesome’s effect put Pascalus back in his hand. Perez Set one card and passed.

Petzold took 1000 damage from Lava Golem. He Normal Summoned Pascalus, using its effect to Special Summon Basilalima. He used Pascalus to play Sea Angel, adding Marincess Battle Ocean to his hand. He played the Field Spell, then used Basilalima and Sea Angel to Link Summon Coral Anemone. Battle Ocean equipped three of his Link Monsters to Coral Anemone. He then used Coral Anemone’s effect to Special Summon Basilalima, and used that to Link Summon Blue Slug. Blue Slug’s effect put Basilalima back in his hand. At this point, Perez flipped Destructive Daruma Karma Cannon! Lava Golem went face-down, and Petzold’s Link Monsters went to the Graveyard. Petzold Set one back row card. In the End Phase, Perez Special Summoned Lady Labrynth of the Silver Castle!

Perez activated Pot of Extravagance, drawing two cards. He sent Lady Labrynth to destroy Lava Golem in battle. He Set one back row card.

Petzold didn’t have Lava Golem, but he did have Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju! Lady Labrynth was replaced by a turtle. Then Petzold used Marincess Dive to Special Summon Blue Tang from the Deck, and had that send Springirl to the Graveyard. He Link Summoned Blue Slug. Battle Ocean equipped Blue Slug with three Marincesses (including Coral Anemone), and Blue Slug returned Springirl to his hand. Blue Tang’s effect put Pascalus in his hand. He Special Summoned Marincess Sea Horse, using it and Blue Slug to play Splash Mage. The equipped Coral Anemone put Blue Tang back in his hand. Splash Mage Special Summoned Sea Horse, and he used both to play Marincess Coral Triangle, but Perez hit it with Solemn Strike! Petzold Normal Summoned Pascalus, which Special Summoned Basilalima. He then used the Pascalus in his Graveyard to get Dive. He passed the turn with Basilalima in Defense Position and Pascalus in Attack Position.

Perez drew, now with three cards in hand and a Gameciel. He Normal Summoned Ariane, and Petzold flipped Infinite Impermanence! He sent Gameciel to destroy Basilalima in battle, then had Ariane destroy Pascalus.

Petzold banished Coral Triangle from his Graveyard to Special Summon Sea Angel and Coral Anemone from his Graveyard. He used Coral Anemone to Special Summon Basilalima. Then he used all his monsters to Link Summon Marincess Great Bubble Reef! Its effect put Blue Slug back in the Extra Deck, and Battle Ocean equipped it with three Link Monsters, pushing it up to 4600 ATK! He Special Summoned Springirl, banishing Marbled Rock, and Great Bubble Reef gained 600 more ATK. Then he used Great Bubble Reef’s effect, discarding Sea Horse to Special Summon Marbled Rock, and Marbled Rock returned the same Sea Horse to his hand. Next, he used Basilalima to play Blue Slug. Basilalima’s effect dealt 200 damage, and Blug Slug returned Basilalima to his hand. Then he used Marbled Rock and Blue Slug for Worldsea Dragon Zealantis! He used its effect to banish all monsters, then Special Summon as many as possible to their owners fields. Gameciel returned to Petzold’s field. Due to his Marincess effects, Petzold could only Special Summon WATER monsters, so Perez’s Ariane did not return! He Special Summoned Blue Tang, sending Marincess Mandarin to the Graveyard. Finally, he moved to the Battle Phase. He had more than enough ATK to finish off Perez’s Life Points!

Duel 3

Perez started the final Duel with Pot of Extravagance, and Petzold had Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it. Perez Set three cards.

Petzold Normal Summoned Blue Tang, and Perez flipped Skill Drain. Petzold Link Summoned Blue Slug, and Blue Tang’s effect put a Pascalus in his hand. He played Battle Ocean, then Special Summoned Springirl by banishing Blue Tang. He used it to Link Summon Sea Angel, then used both of his Link Monsters to play Coral Anemone. Battle Ocean equipped Coral Anemone with his other two Link Monsters, boosting it to 3400 ATK. He attacked directly, dropping Perez to 3600 Life Points.

Perez played another Pot of Extravagance, and this time it resolved. He Set two more cards, filling his entire back row.

Petzold played Cosmic Cyclone to banish Skill Drain! After that resolved, Perez flipped Welcome Labrynth to Special Summon Ariane the Labrynth Servant, and that added Labrynth Stovie Torbie to his hand. Petzold used Coral Anemone to Special Summon Springirl, and used Springirl to Link Summon Sea Angel. Springirl’s effect another Springirl and Marincess Wave to the Graveyard, dealing 400 damage, and Sea Angel added Dive to his hand. He Special Summoned Mandarin from his hand, and used it to play Blue Slug. Slug returned Springirl to his hand. He used Slug and Anemone for Marbled Rock, but it was hit by Solemn Strike. Petzold was still able to get Marincess Wave back thanks to the Coral Anemone he’d used as a Link Material. He played Dive to Special Summon Blue Tang from his Deck, which sent Pascalus to the Graveyard. He used Blue Tang and Sea Angel to Link Summon Splash Mage, and Blue Tang’s effect excavated Pascalus, putting it in his hand. Splash Mage Special Summoned Springirl, and then he Special Summoned the Springirl from his hand. He Normal Summoned Pascalus and did not use its effect. He used all three Marincess to Link Summon Coral Triangle, and Perez flipped Solemn Judgment! Perez dropped to just 850 Life Points to negate the Summon. Petzold Set one back row card, unable to win against Ariane in battle. In the End Phase, Perez used Stovie Torbie to Set Big Welcome on the field. Perez had no cards left in his hand after that.

In the Draw Phase, Perez flipped Big Welcome to Special Summon Lovely Labrynth and return Ariane to his hand. He Special Summoned Stovie in Defense Position, Set Welcome Labrynth from his Graveyard, and Lovely destroyed the Set Marincess Wave. He Normal Summoned Ariane, which added Labrynth Cooclock to his hand. He activated it, which let him flip Welcome Labrynth right away. He used it to Special Summon Lady Labrynth of the Silver Castle. He attacked with Ariane to destroy Splash Mage, and the others attacked to drop Petzold to 600 Life Points! In Main Phase 2, he Set a third back row card.

Petzold drew his card, and Perez flipped Deck Devastation Virus! He Tributed Lady Labrynth to see Petzold’s hand of Pot of Desires, Gameciel, and Pascalus. Pascalus was destroyed, and then Perez flipped Big Welcome Labrynth to Special Summon a new Lady, returning Ariane to his hand. That triggered Lovely, which destroyed Pot of Desires from Petzold’s hand. In his Main Phase, Petzold used a previously sent Pascalus from his Graveyard to get Dive back to his hand. He then used Coral Triangle to Special Summon Coral Anemone and Sea Angel from the Graveyard. He used Anemone to Special Summon Blue Tang. Tang sent Mandarin to the Graveyard. Perez flipped Destructive Daruma Karma Cannon! He Chained Lady’s effect to Set Ice Dragon’s Prison. Petzold lost his Link Monsters, and everything else went face-down. Petzold’s Anemone returned Springirl to his hand. He played Dive to Special Summon Sea Horse. At this moment, the round timer ended with the Life Points at 600 to 850 in Perez’s favor.  Petzold Special Summoned Springirl. He used Springirl and Sea Horse to Link Summon Coral Anemone. He used Springirl’s effect to send a card, hoping to deal some burn damage, but he didn’t have enough Marincess in play to push through enough damage.

Carlos Perez Padilla is moving on to the finals with Labrynth!
